In the wake of the front, unseasonably cool conditions are forecast to continue over the Midwest with spotty showers and gusty winds around the Great Lakes. The front will stall along the southern Atlantic and Gulf Coast. As a result, spotty thunderstorms will continue. Much of the area from the Mississippi and Ohio valleys to the High Plains is projected to be sunny. The orders were lifted at 2 p.m. Monday, firefighter Uriah Hernandez said. They had been in place for up to 500 homes, many of them cabins and vacation houses, and crews aided by a squadron of aircraft worked to protect them. Firefighters working in steep terrain held the blaze near Snow Summit resort in Big Bear Lake to about 100 acres. It was 50 percent contained. Several planes and heli- copters were able to make easy water pickups at the town's large lake, allowing near-continuous drops over the flames about 100 miles east of Los Angeles. Richard Rhode used a hose to spray down a cabin owned by his daugh- ter, who was out of town. He praised the firefighters' fast response. "They put a line up, and they stopped it maybe a 100, 150 yards from us," he told KABC-TV. Sixteen active wildfires were burning in Califor- nia, but none posed seri- ous danger Monday. Of- ficials warned, however, that the risk of fire would increase this week as tem- peratures soar and humid- ity drops across the state. Water cannons usually used for making snow at the ski resort were turned on shortly after the fire broke out Sunday after- noon. "We've made plans for this exact scenario," Snow Summit's marketing man- ager Chris Riddle told KABC-TV. "We're pump- ing out a bunch of water right now, wetting down the trees, wetting down the surrounding grass." The resort in the San Bernardino Mountains was open for mountain biking and scenic ski-lift rides before closing for the fire, Riddle said. All schools within the Bear Valley Unified School District were closed Mon- day because of the blaze. Several mountain roads were off-limits. In Central California, timber and brush left parched by the state's ex- tended drought again spread a fire that has been burning for nearly a month. It grew to more than 78 square miles. Firefighters were slowly making progress on the stubborn blaze that de- stroyed a lodge near Kings Canyon National Park in Fresno County. The Associated Press ZEPHYR COVE, NEV. Of- ficials from both Nevada and California gathered on the shores of Lake Tahoe on Monday to discuss how to deal with the heavy visitor traffic that takes a toll on the lake environment. Nevada Republican Sen. Dean Heller hosted Demo- cratic California Gov. Jerry Brown for the 19th Annual Lake Tahoe Summit. Ne- vada Gov. Brian Sandoval did not attend because he had a meeting with Presi- dent Barack Obama in Las Vegas, but other dignitar- ies including California Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Ne- vada Lt. Gov. Mark Hutchi- son were present. "There is wide biparti- san support in Washington, D.C., as well as in Nevada and California to make sure that Lake Tahoe is preserved and the environ- ment is protected," Hutchi- son said after the event. "At the end of the day, if you've got Republicans and Dem- ocrats working together, we're going to continue to see Lake Tahoe as beauti- ful as it is for generations to come." The summit, themed "Connecting Lake Tahoe's Environment and Economy Through Innovation and Transportation," focused on managing the crowds that flock to the sunny beaches and chilly waters of the al- pine lake. The high visitor volume raises concerns about ero- sion, air pollution and run- off. Rows of vehicles parked alongside the road present safety hazards. Nevada recently invested $30,000 a year to operate the East Shore Express, a shuttle service that buses guests from Incline Vil- lage to the popular Sand Harbor State Park. Smart- phone apps that help guests find parking spots could im- prove traffic flow, Hutchi- son said. Efforts to develop more bike paths along the lake, and divert cyclists off dan- gerous, narrow roadways, are ongoing.
