The suspended slugger agreed on a minor league contract Monday with the Athletics that is worth approximately $500,000 if he's added to the big league roster. The A's announced the deal and said Ramirez is expected to report to spring training by the end of the week, in time for Oakland's first full-squad workout Saturday. He is a non-roster invitee. The 12-time All-Star is due to serve a 50-game suspension for his second positive drug test before he can play for the A's. Bar- ring rainouts, his first game could be May 30 — on his 40th birthday. But that didn't deter general manager Billy Beane and the Athletics. ''I am very pleased Billy was able to add Manny to our team,'' owner Lew Wolff said in an email. ''I look forward to welcoming him and the entire team that Billy and his people have assembled for the coming season.'' The A's made public their interest in the enig- matic outfielder, who had been working out in Flori- da this winter. Starving for offense, Oakland finished third in the AL West last season at 74-88 and ranked 12th out of 14 American League teams in runs. 4:30 p.m. CSNC Daily News photo by Rich Greene 7:30 p.m. Red Bluff's Bryce Eggert controls Chico's Teddy Staiger during their 170-pound final. Seeded fourth in the bracket is WRESTLING By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor League title — check. Division title — check. All that remains on Bryce Eggert's list now is a Masters title. Of course the Red Bluff 170- pounder was a bit more grounded after pinning Chico's Teddy Staiger for the Division-I title in front of his home crowd saying he his main goal coming up at the Northern Section's Masters tournament was to grab a berth to the state tournament. The Top 3 spots in each weight divi- sion as the Masters, which runs Friday and Saturday at the Redding Conven- tion Center, earns those coveted posi- tions. Eggert should have a good of a shot as anybody. His performance over the season pushed by an Eastern Athletic League-South title two weeks ago and the most recent divisional title earned him the No. 2 seed in his weight brack- et. The seeding meeting, which occurred Sunday following the divi- sional meets awarded the top seed at 170 to Orland's Tyler Gil. Gil knocked off Eggert about a month ago at the Corning Invitational. Corning's Daniel Welborn, who on Saturday along with his fellow Cardi- nals teammates were competing at the Division-II tournament in Orland. Welborn lost to Gil in the finals to finish second and give Corning's its best individual performance of the day. Orland, a heavy favorite to win at the Masters, ran away with the D-II title with 270.5 points. Anderson was second with 182.5 points, followed by Sutter. Corning placed fourth with 121.5 points. The Cardinals qualified 11 wrestlers for the Masters. Noah Hall has the No. 6 seed in the 195-pound bracket. Aiden Nye (138) and Noe Franco (220) both have No. 8 seeds. Corning's other Masters qualifiers are: Devon Hiller (106), Martin Solano (112), Elias Vallejo (120), Nathan Fultz (126), Sean Lowe (132), Dakota Henry (152), and Mario Cervantes (182). While Orland dominated D-II, it was Chico once again dominating D-I in Red Bluff and who will likely battle Orland for a section title. The Panthers finished with 277.5 points. Paradise was second with 178 points, followed by Foothill. Red Bluff finished in eight place with 64 points. The Spartans qualified six wrestlers for Masters. Also earning a seed besides Eggert were Kyle Case and Gabe Rivera. Case will be the No. 6 seed in the 145-pound bracket and Rivera is the No. 7 at 152 pounds. Marco Rodriguez (113), Fabian Torres (120) and Tucker Gulliford (160) also qualified for the tournament. Los Molinos qualified two wrestlers from the Division III/IV champi- onships in Etna. Gage Wabs earned a spot at Masters in the 106-pound class and Justin Emerson will compete at 152. But while this coming Saturday remains wide open with possibilities, the past Saturday belonged to Eggert. The Red Bluff senior was fortunate enough to have just five wrestlers in his weight class, but he didn't mess around when he got on the mat. Eggert pinned Oroville's Cody Par- mentier quickly in the first round to earn his spot in the final against Staiger. Eggert scored the first takedown in the championship, but Staiger would eventually reverse back to tie the score at 2-2 at the end of the first period. The Red Bluff senior was aggres- sive again to start the second and once again earned a takedown, before even- tually turning it into a pinning combi- nation with a leg cradle. "I was going for a different move and it just happened to be there so I just used it," he said. Spartan boys grab league title D-II Boys Basketball Bracket Division IV and V brackets can be found on Page 5B By JOSEPH SHUFELBERGER MediaNews Group OROVILLE — The Las Plumas High boys basketball team was sec- onds away from a share of a league title, or at least the overtime period nec- essary to wrest a portion of the cham- pionship away from Red Bluff. But the Spartans' Taylor Blaser broke the Thunderbirds on a three- point play with 3.5 seconds left in reg- ulation for a 53-50 victory and clinched the Eastern Athletic League South title outright for Red Bluff. The school's first league title since 1997. Blaser's big basket came after Las Plumas' Chris Knight made three free throws with 10.7 seconds left after he was fouled on a potential tying 3-point- er. Knight led LP's late charge, scoring 12 points in the fourth quarter and 17 overall. Nick Crete finished with 15 points, and Ronnie Wilson Jr. added 13. For Red Bluff, Blaser and Jake Avila each scored 15 points, and Jonah McInnis had 10. Avila scored 13 of his points after halftime when Red Bluff trailed 24-18. If the Thunderbirds (9-15, 4-8 EALS) had won, they would have tied Red Bluff (11-14, 6-6 EALS) for first with one game left. Instead, LP will have to settle for second place. Knight provided some theatrics after Crete fouled out, hitting a 3-point- er with 17.4 seconds left, cutting the deficit to 50-47, and after the Spartans turned the ball over on a long in- bounds pass, Knight tried to hit anoth- er 3 but was fouled. The junior hit the first two free throws and, after a Spartans timeout, Friday March 3 at Chico State 3. Pleasant Valley (10-15) 2. Shasta (17-9) 4. Red Bluff (11-14) 1. Ultimately, Blaser had the final say with his three-point play. With 3.5 seconds left and no timeouts, LP's desperation 3 at halfcourt was off the mark, giving the Spartans the title. Early on, it appeared the Thunder- birds would get the victory they need- ed. In the second quarter, Las Plumas took a 20-15 lead on a 9-0 run with Crete providing seven points. His steal and subsequent transition layup result- ed in a three-point play, tying the score at 15. Moments later, Crete hit a 3-pointer from the left wing, giving LP the lead. Wilson capped the run with a tip-in for two more points and the 20-15 advan- tage. But Red Bluff started the second half with an 11-0 run to take a 29-24 lead. The Spartans, who missed all 10 of their 3-point attempts in the first half, were 4 of 9 on 3s after halftime, and LP didn't score until there was 2:48 left in the third period.
