A part-time paid director, Lora Lewis, was soon added, and by the first day of the first fall ses- sion 63 girls had enrolled. Finally, the group began to get local and regional sponsors and some funding from grants, as well as involvement, from members of the media, parents, teach- ers and even female law enforcement officers who volunteered to serve as coaches and mentors. "The amazing thing about Girls on the Run, and what makes it so reward- ing, is seeing the real changes that oc- cur in the girls' lives," said Lora. "Not only do they learn to enjoy exercise and begin making healthy lifestyle choices, they also begin to think and speak positively about themselves and others." Several local sponsors have given to the program to help it expand, provide scholarships to participants, train, equip, and prepare staff and volunteers to deliver a program of ex- cellence with far-reaching impact at a lower cost to the participants but their only fundraising event in the spring is aimed to solely fund the program. The culmination for the spring class of Girls on the Run will be the YMCA's Race for Your Hero event on April 21, which is in conjunction with the Dogwood Festival. Approximately 140 girls who are participating in the spring Girls on the Run program will be in the race. The race is open to the public and a portion of each partici- pant's registration fee will contribute financially to the Girls on the Run program.
