Ready, Set ... Go! Locally, the Girls on the Run pro- gram started with several people having the same idea at once. Ann said she began noticing arti- cles about the program in running and other magazines a few years ago and she was intrigued. "The last article I read before taking action was a feature article in a South- ern Living magazine, and, I know with certainty that, when I finished the ar- ticle, I heard God say to my heart, 'go'," Ice said. And, with that, she was off. She first coached in the Triangle- area in the fall of 2010 to gain some insights into the program while re- searching the best way to bring it to our area. Ann said she loved serving in the Triangle-area with the Girls on the Run of the Triangle Program, but she really wanted to be coaching in Fayetteville. At the same time, Rick Houp, the CEO of the YMCA of the Sandhills, was also learning about the program and was interested in bringing it here. Aſter two seasons of coaching in the Triangle, as luck would have it, Ann had a chance encounter with Rick one day when she was at the Fayetteville YMCA to train for a triathlon. As she and Rick talked about Girls on the Run, he asked her if she would be willing to help bring the program to Fayetteville. "The program was a positive expe- rience, it was a great motivator for the girls, and the coaches at the Vanstory Hills site did a great job," said Jill Cloua- tre, a Girl on the Run mom who joined her daughter in the 5k event. "From my own viewpoint, as a coach, one of the most rewarding things to see is a young girl understanding how pre- cious she is just the way she is," Ann said. "Having the privilege of mentoring and coaching and watching her learn and apply principals that prepare her for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy liv- ing. Just seeing her thrive and become more confident over a 10-week period is one of the most rewarding experiences in my lifetime," she said.
