JEFFROBERSON—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS San Francisco Giants' Kelby Tomlinson hits an RBI single during the seventh inning of a baseball game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Wednesday in St. Louis. ST.LOUIS After a very rocky start, Matt Cain might have finally figured out some things Wednesday night re- garding his inconsistent mechanics. Unfortunately, the Giants couldn't preserve a victory for his recovery, as the St. Louis Cardinals rallied with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings for a 4-3 victory at Busch Sta- dium. Yadier Molina's eighth-inning lead- off homer against reliever Hunter Strickland (2-3) proved the game- winner after the Cardinals tied the score in the bottom of the seventh once the Giants had taken a 3-2 lead. Trevor Rosenthal then shut the Gi- ants down in the ninth, striking out Madison Bumgarner — pinch-hitting for the second straight night — for the final out. The defeat prevented the Giants from pulling within a single game of the National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers, who lost earlier in the day in Oakland. Cain allowed just two runs over six innings and retired 10 of the fi- nal 11 hitters he faced. The way Cain started the game, it looked as if he wouldn't last long. He gave up a run in the first inning despite the fact that center fielder Juan Perez climbed the wall and made a spectacular basket catch to bring back a home run ball hit by Cardinals rookie Stephen Pis- cotty. Jhonny Peralta followed Piscotty by roping a double into the right- center gap, and Molina brought him home with a sharp single. Cain gave up a couple more hard-hit balls in the second, and in the third, Piscotty — a Pleasanton native and Stanford prod- uct — lined a Cain offering deep into the left field seats to make it 2-0. But the Giants chipped their way back into a tie against Cardinals lefty starter Jaime Garcia. U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman, who's been asked by the NFL Players Association to void the suspension, warned a league lawyer during oral arguments in the scandal over underinflated footballs that there was prece- dent for judges to toss out penal- ties issued by arbitrators. Berman continued to push for a settlement in the dispute — a potential result he called "ratio- nal and logical." But throughout the hearing, he also cited sev- eral weaknesses in the way the NFL handled the controversy that could become the basis for handing a victory to Brady and his union. After the hearing, Berman met behind closed doors with both sides for more than an hour be- fore the lawyers left court, saying the judge asked them not to dis- NFL Brady suspension in jeopardy By John Hickey Bay Area News Group OAKLAND The latest example of Jesse Chavez's determination to shed the notion that he's not strong enough to last a full sea- son in a rotation came Wednesday in a 5-2 A's win over the Dodgers. Chavez threw a career-high 116 pitches over eight innings and al- lowed just two hits. Just as im- portant, he had the patience to wait until the Oakland offense kicked in. The A's got two runs in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead, then added two more in the ninth to lock it down. Now is the time the A's focus spreads past the confines of 2015 to take in 2016 as well. Chavez can be part of the A's starting rota- tion next year, but not if he wears down like he did in 2014, when the A's replaced him with Jon Les- ter at the trade deadline. Chavez won't be replaced this year, but it's up to him to make sure the A's know he's up to a full-season BASEBALL A's complete sweep over Dodgers ESPN says the Raiders' leading wide receiver from last year will be sidelined due to a fractured hand. It's now or never for many players at the Wyndham Championship — the last chance to qualify for golf's postseason. That group includes Tiger Woods. The biggest name in the sport is playing the final event of the PGA Tour's regular season for the first time, in an effort to get his game back on track and make a last-gasp push for the playoffs. "I've started to build. I just need to get more consistent with everything, and start stringing together not just holes, not just rounds but tournaments," Woods said Wednesday. "That's why this tournament's important to me. Hopefully I can win it, get into the playoffs and play a bunch of golf." Woods, who missed the cut at the PGA Championship last week, beat last Friday's deadline to en- ter the Wyndham but didn't final- ize his commitment until Monday. He said he had "a blast" play- ing a pro-am round Wednesday with NBA All-Star Chris Paul — a native of nearby Winston-Salem who starred at Wake Forest. And now he wants to stick around for a while. In 10 previous events this year, Woods has missed the cut in four of them and withdrew from an- other.
