8A Daily News – Saturday, February 18, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Church news Choral workshop Allan Petk- er has been bringing his magical musi- cal talents to the Red Bluff Presbyterian Church for the past 16 years. He'll make it 17 years on Feb. 25- 26 with the Choral Work- shop and Ecu- menical Wor- ship Service. Cost of the workshop is $45 per per- son, which includes conducting, music packet, lunch, snacks and bottled water. To register, call the Presbyterian Church at 527- 0372. The workshop is limited to 75 participants. The workshop begins on Saturday, Feb. 25 with registration at 8:30 a.m. Rehearsal will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a break for lunch. Rehearsal begins on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 9 a.m. and the workshop culminates with singing at the wor- ship service beginning at 11 a.m. Singers will be instructed in breathing, blending, phrasing, hitting those hard notes, feeling rhythm, enunciating and singing vowel sounds. Anthems to be sung will be "Eternal Life," "I Wanna Be Ready," "You Are Mine," and Petker's own "The Joy of the Lord is My Strength." Petker, of San Pedro, has conducted choirs of all age levels in festivals, honor choirs, workshops, and tours throughout the U.S. and abroad. He recently completed his 15th season with Consort Chorale, an ensemble of 40 select voices from the San Francis- co Bay Area. Petker is a published composer and arranger with more than 250 published works with numerous pub- lishing houses. His conducting books, Choral Questions and Answers Vols. I, II, III, IV and V, have become sta- ples in school curriculum and for secondary resource material. His crusade to offer a cure for musical illiteracy culminated in the publication of the Advance learn- ing series. As a composer for hire he has written original scores for live performance and has penned a num- ber of original TV commercials which have appeared on the CNBC network. This is common to all mankind. Yet, we are victori- ous through Christ. "… He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world" (1 John 4:4). "To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mys- tery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27). "Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us" (Romans 8:37). During one such occasion I cried out to God. "Lord, I don't like this." At first I was determined not to even say this to God, but then I remembered that He knows our every thought. Therefore I prayed, "Lord I don't understand, for this situation is like adding sorrow to sorrow." I knew that this negative thing was from the enemy of my soul, yet I still wondered why God allowed it. A quick reply came into my mind, "Will you still praise me?" My immediate response was, "Yes LORD." Don't roll out the "paddy wagon" yet! Don't call the men in the little white coats to take me away. Yes world, I hear God speak to me through the sweet soft voice of the Holy Spirit of God! Believ- ers in Jesus applaud and say, "Yes," for they also hear the Lord speak to their hearts. The world may laugh and taunt those who are born again Christians, but there will come a day when sorrow and darkness will take them to a place that is known as Hell. Oops, sorry I'm not being politically correct with these statements. It's ok though because the One true and living God will bring His plans to pass, one fine day. In considering the battles of life let's consider this analogy: Picture a person standing at the bottom of an escalator who is looking upwards towards the top. He/she is considering riding the handrail instead of the steps. Yet this person realizes that riding the rail would be dangerous. Per- haps a fall would occur and a serious injury also. Or, if he/she rode the steps, both handrails would add addi- tional security. A smart person would choose the steps and the handrails for proper balance. Truth is that many peo- ple choose to "ride the rails of life with no spiritual handrails." Perhaps another way of putting it is, "living on the edge." It's like deciding to walk across the Grand Canyon on a rope, like a trapeze artist with no net of protection. All the while there is God. He is our security. He can only be reached through Jesus Christ, the anointed One! This is what Jesus said in John 14:6: "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). God's Word also clearly explains that the only name that will save us is Jesus. Yet more people use his name as a curse word than as the Name of the Sav- ior. In chapter 4 of the book of Acts, the Apostle Paul addresses the San- hedrin. Paul is speaking of Jesus. Verse 12 says, "Nor is there salva- tion in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). Different religions can laugh and poke fun at born again Christians, Patricia Martin GodTalk but the safe life, regardless of crisis situations, is the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which is found only in one book – The Bible. God's Word is His love letter to all mankind. Dare we ignore His Word? Even Christians often neglect the study of the Word of God. When we make every effort to line our lives up with the Word of God, we are held secure with the "Mighty Hand Rails of God." We are going upward on our journey to heav- en. Our steps are secure in Christ. Our spiritual escalator is safe and oiled by the Holy Spirit of God. God himself is holding us and so we are in good hands. We only slip and fall when we remove our hands from the faithful hands of the God of all creation. "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eter- nal life, and they shall never per- ish, neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand. I and My Father are one (John 10:27-30). Look up now and hold on.
