California Cattle- Women were invited to participate in the 45th annual World Ag Expo, February 14-16, Tulare, CA in the Beef & Live- stock Pavilion and to be one of the approximate- ly 1,490 exhibitors. What a marvelous, amazing experience for the beef cattle industry. Julia Panozza, WAE Space Sales Coordinator was instrumental in encouraging CCW pres- ident Melanie Fowle and the cattlewomen to have a booth in the 20,000 sq. foot Pavilion D, near Gate C on the western end of the grounds. I had thought the Pennsylvania Farm Show was large, or the New York State Fair, but this was incredible. I was told there was 2.6 million square feet of exhibit space on 200 acres. It stretched one mile east and west, and 1/2 mile north to south, with free parking. Originally it was known as the Tulare Farm & Equipment Show, then a dairy pavilion was added, and now the beef industry was recognized. It is always the 2nd week of February, Tuesday through Thurs- day with admis- sion at $12. There are 1,500 volun- teers wearing an orange jack- et and they were all so friendly. So many people were not familiar with beef cattle, so it was a great opportunity to educate them with a few words, after they played the game. Our prizes were sim- Jean went about their assign- ments. 100,000 people were expected to attend the World Ag Expo, and I believe their figures. Riding the tram on the grounds I visited with a dairy visitor from Wis- consin who was on a week long agriculture tour of CA including the three days at WAE. She said there were people from New Jersey, New York, Missouri, Louisiana and Canada in her group. In the mornings they had visit- ed a cheese factory, six dairy farms, an orange orchard and packing plant, and the next day would be a vineyard. Each morning at 9 a.m. the Star Spangled Banner was sung over the public address sys- tem. Everyone stopped walking down the streets or working in their exhibitor spaces. The men removed their hats and caps, while everyone placed their hand over their heart. It was impressive. Our CCW booth brought life to the pavil- ion because we had a beef knowledge game with questions about beef by-products, nutri- tion, beef (meat) cuts, beef production, animal Your tax experts 32 Years Plus Experience "Enrolled to practice before the IRS" Open Year-Round New Clients Welcome www.lassentax.com Enrolled Agents: Rose Hablitzel, EA Rex Cerro, EA (530) 527-8225 208 Elm St., Red Bluff All major Credit Cards accepted Tues-Sat 9am-5pm • Closed Sun & Mon FIREPLACE PRODUCTS 22825 Antelope Blvd., Red Bluff 530-528-2221 • Fax 530-528-2229 www.thestovejunction.com The North State's premier supplier of stoves STOVE JUNCTION The Over 25 years of experience COMPLETE AUTO REPAIR All makes and models. A beef stick or a candy called Cow Tails. We asked them to partic- ipate in a drawing for "The Healthy Beef Cook Book" with a drawing each day. The first day we had 688 personal contacts and the 2nd day there were 1,120 personal contacts. We headed home before the results of 3rd day were tabulated. I was told there were visitors from 70 foreign countries attending WAE, and we enjoyed visiting with some for- eign exchange students that were visiting our booth. A young man from Poland played our beef knowledge game, and as a prize he was given a beef jerky stick. The youth from Tajikistan liked the flavor and tex- ture while the Polish student thought it was too dry. While I was standing at the booth we had vis- itors from China, Turkey, Serbia, Mexico, Canada, Great Britain, Germany, Russia, Aus- tralia and Mali. The for- eign visitors had a spe- cial business center, interpreters, and when they registered their lan- yard included an orange streamer so we knew they were from afar. Our booth also had a 26 inch television that played the "Life on a Cattle Ranch," the dvd that featured 16 yr old Abby, 14 yr old Brant, 10 yr old Caden Grisedale, and 13 yr old Newly Remodeled! To go with the DVD was an agricultural maga- zine for kids that was a guide to Ranch Life with information and games about beef cattle. There was beef relat- ed items for sale for those interested. Brand coffee mugs, mouse pads, insulated grocery bags, license plates, afghans, aprons with "I love beef" in rhine- stones, the Californa Ranches History book and the DVD. There were many free beef recipes available, thanks to California Beef Council, including the 2011 National Beef Cook-Off recipe book- let. The bumper stick- ers, I love beef and the west wasn't won on sal- ads were big hits with the attendees as well as the recipes. Booth co-chairman, CCW 2nd vice president Sheila Bowen recruited cattlewomen members from Kern County to help work in the booth. We, Melanie Fowle, 1st vp Tammie McElroy, and I appreciated the help of the kids plus their mothers Paula Francis and Kellie Griesdale, Amanda Bar- rett, Julie Barnett from Kern, and from Madera County Linda Arata, Adele Bartholomew, Esther Moore, Lyn Northgard, Rendell Westling & Lynette Brendel. Over 191 volunteer hours were spent at the World Ag Expo booth, not counting the hours spent in planning the booth by the president and her vice presidents, or my 7.5-8 hours travel time each way. Fresno radio KMJ – KM 580 reporter inter- viewed Sheila Bowen for several segments on their farm shows that I knew about. At the Seminar build- ing, Tulare Cattle- Women Vickie Malm- strom and Sheri Dooley were hostesses serving cookies, water and cof- fee when we stopped in to listen to Amanda Radke of Beef Maga- zine speak. "The Time is Now" and we must share with the public that we care about our animals. We were "green" before it was cool, because we take care of our land and the wild life, and many times we are several generations after the original settlers. We produce a safe, wholesome, nutritious product for you to enjoy. Amanada Nolz Radke was a National Beef Ambassador and is pas- sionate about the beef industry. More next week about the World Ag Expo. I am so glad I had the opportunity to visit with the visitors about beef and the beef cattle industry.
