(AP) — Jussi Jokinen scored on a deflection with 8:05 left to lift the Carolina Hurricanes past the San Jose Sharks, 3-2 on Friday night. Jeff Skinner and Justin Faulk scored 3:03 apart in the first period for the Hurricanes, who let a two-goal lead slip away before regrouping to beat the Pacific Division leaders. The Southeast Division's last-place team won its second straight, earned points in its sixth consecutive game and improved to 10-3-1 in its last 14 at home. Dan Boyle and Brent Burns scored in a 2:26 span of the third for the Sharks, who fell to 1-2-1 midway through their nine-game road swing and have lost five of seven overall. Russell Westbrook scored 18 points for Okla- homa City, but the All-Star point guard left the game with 1:13 left in the third quarter with what the team said was a sprained right ankle. His first victory came in a bat- tle of the backups against Thomas Greiss, who stopped 22 shots in place of Antii Niemi. A solid dump-in by Jaroslav Spacek started the sequence that led to Joki- nen's winner. Drayson Bowman cycled the puck out to Jamie McBain at the blue line, and McBain unloaded a blast that Jokinen tipped past Greiss. The Sharks trailed 2-0 after two periods but tied it fewer than 4 minutes into the third after they received goals from a pair of defensemen. Boyle struck 1:26 into the third when he snapped the puck past Peters from the back edge of the circles. Burns made it 2-all with 16:08 to play when he took a feed from Dominic Moore and beat the Carolina backup. Peters stopped the last 13 shots he faced, including a sprawling save — with some help from defenseman Bryan Allen — on Patrick Marleau's point-blank attempt with about 1:20 Athletics still have strong interest in signing slugger Manny Ramirez, who presents a low-risk investment for the rebuilding franchise. If things come together, the 39-year- old would sign a deal for slightly more than the league minimum of $480,000. He first must serve a 50-game sus- pension without pay for violating base- ball's drug policy for the second time. With no rainouts, the first game Ramirez would be eligible to play is June 2 at Kansas City. The sides could reach agreement as soon as the next few days or sometime next week, and Ramirez then likely would travel from Florida to Arizona to undergo a physical before joining Oak- land's spring training camp for full- squad workouts starting Feb. 25. Oakland recently sent representa- tives to Florida to observe workouts by Ramirez, who retired from the Tampa Bay Rays last season rather than serve a 100-game suspension. For Ramirez, this could become a chance to help repair his reputation and serve as a pos- itive clubhouse influence on a young team — that's sure what the Oakland brass hope, anyway. The A's last week agreed to terms on a $36 million, four-year contract with highly sought after outfielder Yoe- nis Cespedes, a Cuban defector who has expressed interest in playing with Ramirez. At baseball's winter meetings in December, it was announced that Ramirez had applied for reinstatement. He had his suspension for a second failed drug test cut to 50 because he sat out nearly all of last season. The Sharks didn't arrive until late Friday morning because foggy condi- tions in Raleigh on Thursday night kept their flight grounded in Florida, and they fell behind early after allow- ing a pair of goals. Skinner put the Hurricanes up 1-0 with 12:29 left in the first with a fluky goal. His shot along the end line clipped the back of Greiss' skate and went in for the reigning rookie of the year's 16th goal and fourth in 12 games since since returning from a concus- sion. Then, Faulk — their latest Calder Trophy candidate — made it a two- goal game just over 3 minutes later on the power play. The rookie defenseman took a pretty backdoor feed from Jiri Tlusty and buried it into an open net. A's still pursuing slugger Manny Ramirez PHOENIX (AP) — The Oakland saying he was notified ''of an issue'' under the drug program. Ramirez, who will be 40 on May 30, ranks 14th on the career list with 555 home runs. He went 1 for 17 (.059) in five games last season for Tampa Bay, which had signed him to a one- year deal worth $2.02 million. This would be the 20th major league season for Ramirez, a career .312 hitter with 1,831 RBIs. Oakland, which traded away its top three pitch- ers this offseason including two starters, sure could use a power bat in the middle of the order in a tough AL West that already has seen the key additions of Albert Pujols on the Los Angeles Angels and star Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish for the two-time reigning AL champion Texas Rangers. The A's haven't reached the play- offs or had a winning season since being swept by the Tigers in the 2006 AL championship series. • 10 a.m., ABC — Dallas at New York • 12:30 p.m., ABC — Orlando at Miami • 3 p.m., CSNC—Sacramento at Cleve- land •5 p.m., ESPN — Denver at Oklahoma City NHL •9 a.m., NBC — San Jose at Detroit • Noon, NBC — Boston at Minnesota •3 p.m., NBCSN — New Jersey at Mon- treal SOCCER •Midnight, FOX SOCCER—A-League, Sydney FC at Adelaide United •6 a.m., FOX SOCCER—FA Cup, 5th Round, Tottenham at Stevenage • 8:30 a.m., FOX SOCCER—FA Cup, MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL Monday •4 p.m., ESPN — UConn at Villanova •6 p.m., ESPN — Baylor at Texas 5th Round, Brighton & Hove Albion at Liv- erpool • 11:30 a.m., FOX SOCCER—Serie A, Lazio at Palermo WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL • 10 a.m., CSNB — Rice at SMU • Noon, ESPN2 — Duke at Maryland • Noon, CSNB — UCLA at Southern Cal •2 p.m., ESPN2 — Purdue at Michigan St. •2 p.m., CSNB — Washington at Arizona MCT photo improved to 23-7, the best record in the Western Con- ference, with their third win over the Warriors in 22 days. David Lee led Golden State with 23 points. Monta Ellis, who scored 48 points the last time the teams played, had 11 in this one. Ellis went down moments after Westbrook, with 17.1 seconds left in the third quarter. The Warriors said Ellis suffered a hyperex- tended right knee, but could have returned if the game hadn't been so lopsided. Oklahoma City, which shot 52.7 percent from the field, improved to 6-1 in games played after a loss. The Thunder had lost 96-95 at Houston on Wednesday. A 16-2 first-quarter run gave the Warriors a 24-17 lead and Golden State was up 39-36 with 5:28 left in the first half when the Thun- der scored 10 straight points. Oklahoma City had three consecutive dunks during the run — first a one-hander by Durant, followed by an alley-oop from Durant to Harden and capped by a steal and one-handed jam by Westbrook that gave the Thunder a 46-39 lead. Okla- homa City stretched that margin to 58-48 by halftime. Durant and Serge Ibaka opened up the second half with baskets for the Thunder and Golden State never cut the margin below double digits. Back-to-back 3- pointers by Royal Ivey and Durant fueled an 8-0 run to end the third quarter and put Oklahoma City up 84-65. During that run, West- brook steamed down the court after a steal before pulling up in the lane with 1:13 left in the quarter and hobbling off the court. Ellis' injury occurred right in front of the Warriors' bench. Dorell Wright, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson each scored 11 points for Golden State. Tayshaun Prince fin- Sports ished with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Stuck- ey was 12 for 20 from the floor and 11 for 12 from the free-throw line. Detroit has now won six of its last eight games after a 4-20 start. DeMarcus Cousins led the Kings with 26 points and 15 rebounds, while Marcus Thornton added 24. The Kings threatened to pull away several times in the first three quarters, but couldn't stop Stuckey. His pair of free throws at the end of the third gave him 31 points and pulled Detroit within 88-86. A layup by Knight put the Pistons ahead with 10:15 to play. After the teams traded the advan- tage several times, the rookie had a three-point play to make it 102-100 Detroit with four minutes left. The Kings scored the next four points, but Knight came through again, hitting a 3-pointer to put the Pistons up 105- 104 with 2:17 left. Ben Gordon followed with a trey of his own on Detroit's next possession to make it a four-point game. Cousins and Knight traded baskets, and the Pistons clinched the game from the free-throw line. 1B Weekend February 18-19, 2012 Stuckey leads Pistons past Kings Notes: Isaiah Thomas made the first start of his career in the building where his namesake won NBA titles with the Pis- tons in 1989 and 1990. ...
