JEFFROBERSON—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Chris Heston throws during the first inning against the St. Louis Cardinals Monday in St. Louis. ByR.b.Fallstrom The Associated Press ST. LOUIS RookieStephenPiscotty tripled and scored the go-ahead run on Mark Reynolds' groundout in the eighth inning, and the St. Louis Car- dinals beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1 on Monday night. The run came a little too late for Michael Wacha, who allowed one run in seven innings with six strikeouts but missed a chance to be- come the majors' first 15-game win- ner. The right-hander faced the Gi- ants for the first time since allowing an NL championship series-ending homer to Travis Ishikawa last fall in his first appearance of the post- season. Yadier Molina hit his third homer off Chris Heston leading off the fourth for St. Louis. The Giants tied it on Brandon Crawford's two-out RBI triple in the sixth. The Cardinals have won nine of 12, ended the Giants' four-game win- ning streak, and lead Pittsburgh by six games in the NL Central. They're tops in the majors in overall record (76-42) and home record (45-18). Kevin Siegrist (4-0) worked a per- fect eighth against the top of the Gi- ants order and Trevor Rosenthal earned his 37th save in 39 chances when pinch-hitter Buster Posey flied out to the wall in center. Piscotty tripled off Hunter Strick- land (2-2) with one out in the eighth and Brandon Moss was intentionally walked. On the deciding play, Craw- ford fielded Reynolds' grounder and ran to second for a forceout and then spun and threw wide to first, miss- ing a chance at a double play. Rosenthal tied Pittsburgh's Mark Melancon for the National League lead. The only problem was that was Heeney's only game-ready jersey so it went back to the equipment staff to get washed for the next game. "I wish they wouldn't, but it has to look nice for the next game," he said. If Heeney keeps playing as well as he did in his first exhibition game, he will have plenty more game-used jerseys to choose from. Heeney was one of Oakland's top performers last Friday night against the St. Louis Rams, re- cording a team-high eight tack- les, one sack and a quarterback hit while getting 32 snaps as a backup inside linebacker. "He's very active," coach Jack Del Rio said. "That's what we see in practice every day. He flies around. He's very, very active. His speed showed up. In his eighth year on the PGA Tour, Jason Day reached a major pinnacle of his career by winning the PGA Championship. And he could be sure that Ti- ger Woods was watching. In only it's second year, the series has staged 49 modified race cars with 52 different driv- ers. The series has already run events at All American Speed- way in Roseville, Lakeport Speedway, Redwood Acres Raceway in Eureka, Madera Speedway, Ukiah Speedway and Stockton 99 Speedway. After his win at Stockton 99 Speedway on Aug. 8, Cody Braund of Anderson leads in the series championship battle by only eight points over Tripp Gaylord of Golden, Colorado. Braund has run every event both this year and last and is the grandson of the legendary Jack Epperson from Shasta Speedway. Gaylord, driving for the Mike Garcia racing team, was the winner of the 5th annual Sum- mer Horsepower Nationals at Madera on June 6. He has set fast time 5 out of the 7 times this season. Darrin Knight of Kelseyville trails Gaylord by only 12 points. Knight captured three victories this year, the first at Lakeport Speedway on May 2, then at All American Speedway in Rose- ville on June 27 and at Ukiah Speedway on July 18. Michael Mitchell of Loomis is running fourth, 22 points be- hind Knight. So far this season he has racked up 3 third place finishes, 1 fourth and 1 fifth. His Sinister Diesel #77 was the first visiting car to make an impressive outside pass earlier this year at Lakeport. He runs consistently up front and has a knack for keeping the car go- ing forward. Jason Philpot of Sacra- mento holds the fifth spot in the points standings. He was the winner of the final event at Roseville in 2014, and he knows what it will take to win a race at Shasta. His run at Stockton 99 was very impressive as he picked off cars on his way to a third place finish. Richie Potts of Petaluma moved up to sixth in the stand- ing after his Stockton run, and has run many laps at the Shasta race track. Seventh in points is rookie-of-the-year contender Kelsie Martin from Beaver Creek, Oregon. She has 3 top-ten finishes so far in her first season in a modified and is the only female in the series. Other drivers from the area in the points battle are Guy Young in 11th place and Mi- chael Morrison in 18th place, both of Redding. All these drivers plus more will gather at the Shasta Speed- way Friday, Aug. 21 for practice, and Saturday, Aug. 22 for the Lucas Oil Dash for Cash and the Swartz Diesel 60-lap feature. The North State Modifieds will join the local classes for a full evening of auto racing. For more information visit the North State Modified Se- ries Facebook page or call 707 274-1662.
