(The first two seasons also are available on Blu-ray.) What's interesting is that the newest release is titled "Rookie Blue: Season Five, Volume One," which is what ran as the en- tire fifth season on ABC last year. Those episodes that renew the Andy-and-Sam (Missy Peregrym, Ben Bass) ro- mance, plus the ones that are currently airing as the sixth season, were filmed last year as what then was termed one long "super-season" ... though it ultimately was split into two seasons. It will be interesting to see if the next DVD set to come will be labeled "Season Five, Volume Two" or "Sea- son Six." In either case, the included episodes will be the same, the ones that are being televised this summer. Q : I was wondering why "Royal Pains" is on for such a short time, and then we have to wait a year before we see it again. — Yvonne Hoemke, Kingman, Ariz. A : The subject of the typ- ically shorter seasons of cable series has been addressed here numerous times, and it hasn't changed: Cable series typically have shorter seasons than broad- cast-network series do (though even some of those can be short, as verified by the previous answer about "The Briefcase"). "Royal Pains" has been one of those series from the start. There will be an eighth season of the series next summer, and executive pro- ducer Michael Rauch has said that he anticipates it will be the last, though USA hadn't made that official at the time this was written. The show always has been a steady performer for the network, to the degree that two seasons of it sometimes have been ordered at once, so anything is possible.
