By Kelly Osborne The Tehama County Veterans Service Office is currently looking to em- ploy a VA Student Work Study. The program is open to anyone using the educational assistance programs administered by the VA, including the G.I. Bill. The Student Work Study must be enrolled at least three-quarter time in a college degree, voca- tional, or professional pro- gram. The Work Study will be paid by the VA at an hourly rate equivalent to the state minimum wage. All wages paid to the Stu- dent Work Study under this program are tax free. The Student Work Study will work in the Veter- ans Service Office in Red Bluff. Work may consist of scheduling appointments for veterans and their fam- ilies, entering data into computer systems, an- swering phone calls, pre- paring Tehama County Veteran ID Cards, and as- sisting veterans in com- pleting applications for benefits. If you are interested in becoming a Student Work Study, please contact our office for an application and appointment for an interview. Additional em- ployment checks will be required. This is a great opportunity to assist vet- erans and gain in-depth knowledge of veteran's benefits. Tehama County Vet- eran ID cards are available on a walk in basis Mon- day, thru Thursday, from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. Please bring a certified copy or original DD-214 or your VA Medical Card. If you do not have a certi- fied copy or original DD- 214, we can help you order one. No Veteran ID cards are available on Fridays. Please contact our office if you are a business owner and would like to com- plete a business form to participate in the Tehama County Veteran ID Card program. There are many state and federal benefits and programs available to vet- erans and their depen- dents. To find out if you are eligible for any of these benefits, call the Tehama County Veterans Service Office at 529-3664. The new address is the Bank of America Building, 955 Main St. Ste. It can lead to kidney problems, glaucoma and other eye disorders, foot ul- cers, amputation of feet or legs, stroke, diabetic coma, and even death. If your doctor thinks you're at risk for diabetes, Medicare covers screening tests for it. And, if you de- velop the disease, Medi- care covers a wide vari- ety of medications, home testing equipment, sup- plies, and self-manage- ment training to help you cope with it. Screening tests are used to detect diabetes early. Some of the conditions that may qualify you as being at risk for diabetes include: · High blood pressure; · Dyslipidermia (a his- tory of abnormal choles- terol and triglycleride lev- els); · Obesity (with certain conditions); · Impaired glucose (blood sugar) tolerance; · High fasting glucose (blood sugar). Medicare will pay for two diabetes screening tests in a 12-month period. After the initial screening, your doctor will determine when to do the second test. You and your doctor can discuss diabetes and any other health concerns you have during a "Welcome to Medicare" visit. Medi- care covers this one-time review of your health, in- cluding counseling on any screenings, shots, or other care you may need. (You must have this visit within the first 12 months you're enrolled in Medicare Part B.) In addition, Medicare covers an annual wellness visit with your doctor, dur- ing which you can develop or update a personalized prevention plan, based on your current health and risk factors. If you do develop dia- betes, Medicare pays for self-management train- ing to help you learn how to successfully manage the disease. Your doctor must prescribe this train- ing for Medicare to cover it. The training covers a variety of topics, includ- ing the risks of poor blood sugar control; nutrition and how to manage your diet; options to improve blood sugar control; exer- cise and why it's impor- tant to your health; and how to take your medica- tions properly. Also, Medicare covers medical nutrition therapy services, to help you learn what foods to eat and how to follow an individualized diabetic meal plan. Generally, Medicare Part B (medical insur- ance) covers services and supplies needed by people who have or are at risk for diabetes. Medicare Part D (the prescription drug pro- gram) helps pay for sup- plies for injecting or in- haling insulin. Here are some of the items covered under Part B: · Home blood sugar monitors and related sup- plies, such as test strips, lancet devices, and lancets; · Foot exams and treat- ment (needed by people with diabetic peripheral neuropathy and loss of pro- tective sensation); · Glaucoma tests; · External insulin pumps and insulin the de- vices use: · Therapeutic shoes or inserts; · Screening tests, "Wel- come to Medicare" vis- its, and annual wellness checkups. Items covered under Part D include: · Drugs for maintaining blood sugar; · Insulin that isn't ad- ministered with a pump. Medicare doesn't cover everything, of course. Among the diabetes sup- plies and services not cov- ered are: · Eye exams for glasses (called refraction); · Orthopedic shoes (for people whose feet are im- paired but intact); · Cosmetic surgery. You can do many things to control your diabe- tes. Talk with your doctor about what, how much, and when you eat. Also talk with him or her about how much you should weigh, and the different ways you can reach your weight goal. Take your medications as directed, and discuss any problems you encoun- ter with your physician. Be active for a total of 30 min- utes most days. Keep tabs on your blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and choles- terol. If you smoke, quit. Medi- care also covers counseling on how to stop smoking, if your doctor orders it.
