Bonds realizes there are plenty of people who still won't like him or ever con- sider him a Hall of Famer, those who will always as- sume he cheated by using performance-enhancing drugs. He knows his legal vic- tory doesn't assure him a spot in Cooperstown, ei- ther. Or change his legacy, whatever that winds up be- ing. "I don't mind if people get on me at times, I don't mind that stuff," Bonds said. "That's part of the game, that's part of the business. I know now that I'm retired more so than when I was playing." "I think when you're playing and you're giv- ing all you can, you want people to praise you more than being negative toward you. After being away for a while, some people just say you mature a little bit later. Got it after the fact," he said. Bonds also acknowl- edged how he wasn't al- ways the nicest guy to be around during his playing days, but, "I was preparing for my job. I thought at that time it was in my way in what I needed to do to go to work. So I was a little more standoffish or what- ever you want to call it." A jury found Bonds guilty in 2011 for giving a meandering answer to a federal grand jury in 2003 when asked whether his personal trainer gave him anything that required a syringe for self-injection. An 11-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned that conviction this past April. Bonds was charged in 2007, four years after his testimony before the grand jury after receiving a grant of immunity. He didn't dis- pute that he took steroids, but testified to the grand jury that his former trainer, Greg Anderson, told him they were flaxseed oil and arthritic balm. After a three-week trial, Bonds was convicted for his response to the ques- tion: "Did Greg ever give you anything that required a syringe to inject yourself with?" A three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit unani- mously upheld the convic- tion in 2013 but the larger group of judges ruled in April that there was insuf- ficient evidence Bonds' an- swer was material to the federal investigation into sports doping. Bonds FROM PAGE 1 anapolis Motor Speedway last month and will be in place again this weekend at Michigan, and it received some criticism from driv- ers. But a low-downforce package put in place at Kentucky was more pop- ular, and it will be used again at Darlington next month. "A ton of positives we saw from Kentucky, but we've got to take the time to dial those things in and make sure that every- body's on the same page, we've got the best package to put forth, especially as we look to '16," O'Donnell said. "That does have a lot of momentum and a lot of positives that we can ap- ply to Darlington, and then make some calls post-Dar- lington as well." Friday's announcement came shortly after Matt Kenseth won the pole at MIS. Joe Gibbs racing swept the top three spots in qualifying, with Denny Hamlin and Carl Edwards finishing second and third. JGR recently won four consecutive races — three by Kyle Busch and one by Kenseth. Busch's wins came at Kentucky, New Hampshire and Indianap- olis, meaning he won un- der three sets of rules. That left Kenseth under- standably confident about his team's ability to adapt. "Our cars have been re- ally fast in all three con- figurations," Kenseth said. "We've been up front in all three of them, on speed and in the races and in qualifying, so from that aspect, I feel OK about no matter what they bring." Kenseth did say his per- sonal preference was for the low downforce. NASCAR will have an- other chance to observe the high-drag package this weekend, and there's plenty of uncertainty sur- rounding Sunday's race at MIS. Drivers complained it was too hot with the high- drag rules package, which reduces airflow under the car, trapping heat in the cockpit. This week, NASCAR mandated a dual outlet duct be used on the right- side window to help with ventilation. Jeff Gordon has won three Cup races at Mich- igan, including a victory last August, but that may not mean much this time. NASCAR FROM PAGE 1 made only four pars in his wild round of 70 and was the clubhouse leader at 7-under 137. One shot be- hind was a group that in- cluded Spieth, the Mas- ters and U.S. Open cham- pion who is very much in the picture to join Woods and Ben Hogan as the only players to win three majors in one year. Scott Piercy (70) and Brendan Steele (69) joined Spieth at 6-under 138. The star of the day was Iwata, a 34-year-old from Japan who had every rea- son to think his first ap- pearance in the PGA Cham- pionship would be a short one. He opened with a 77 and still was 3 over when he reached the back nine. Iwata reeled off five birdies and an eagle, and he saved par on the 18th for a 63. It was the 27th time that a player shot 63 in a ma- jor, 13 of those in the PGA Championship and most recently Jason Dufner at Oak Hill two years ago. "When I came here, I was thinking just to make my game better and better and on Sunday, I can be in the top 10," Iwata said through a translator. Even with a record-tying score, he still has plenty of work ahead of him to do that. Iwata was at 4-un- der 140 and losing ground as one player after an- other took aim at Whis- tling Straits in good scor- ing conditions. Day was through 14 holes while Jones, his fellow Aus- tralian, was through 12 holes and on the front nine. Day shared the 54-hole lead at the U.S. Open while coping with vertigo symp- toms. He missed by one turn of the golf ball a birdie on the 18th hole at St. An- drews that would have put him in a playoff at the British Open. Now it looks like he gets yet another chance. He was thrilled to stop play, especially as the storm clouds turned dark and he had trouble with depth perception on some of his wedges. "We'll see how it goes to- morrow," Day said. "We've got some scoring holes and some tough ones to finish on." Dustin Johnson, the 18- hole leader, took a brief lead at 8 under until he ran into trouble on the par-5 11th with a wicked lie in the bunker that led to bo- gey. He added two more bo- geys and was four shots out of the lead at 5 under. Golf FROM PAGE 1 vision and 1 games off the pace in the wild-card hunt. Rookie Jason Garcia (1- 0) got three straight outs in the 13th to earn his first major league win. Oakland trailed 6-4 in the ninth before scoring two runs against All-Star reliever Zach Britton, who had converted 24 straight save opportunities and was a big reason why Bal- timore was 51-0 when lead- ing after eight innings. Af- ter Josh Phegley drove in a run with a groundout, for- mer Oriole Danny Valencia hit an 0-2 pitch for a two- out, RBI single. Earlier, Baltimore ral- lied from a 4-0 deficit. Af- ter Jones hit a three-run drive in the fifth, he added a sacrifice fly in the seventh before Davis ripped a 1-2 pitch from Fernando Abad far over the right-field wall to make it 6-4. Abad had not allowed an earned run in 13 appear- ances since July 8. Stephen Vogt homered and Coco Crisp had four hits for the Athletics, who have lost 14 of 21. Oakland had 17 hits but stranded 13 and had two runners thrown out at the plate. After being no-hit in Seattle on Wednesday by Hisashi Iwakuma, the Orioles ended a run of 12 straight hitless innings when J.J. Hardy singled in the second. But Baltimore extended its streak of con- secutive scoreless innings to 15 before Jones con- nected in the fifth. Oakland provided a four-run cushion for left- hander Brad Mills, who was recalled from Triple-A Nashville to make his 2015 major league debut. Mills came in 3-0 with a 1.56 ERA lifetime against Bal- timore and 1-4 with a 10.16 ERA against everyone else. His success against the Orioles continued until the fifth, and Mills didn't make it to the sixth. Baltimore's comeback negated a poor start.
