OntheAir By Larry Millson BayAreaNewsGroup TORONTO SonnyGraywas supposed to give the Oak- land A's one last chance to beat the surging Toronto Blue Jays. Gray leads the American League with a 2.06 earned run average, and he was supposed to be their best chance to salvage one win from the three- game series. But the right-hander developed back spasms on Wednesday night, and they did not improve enough by Thursday. So the ball was given to another right- hander, Jesse Chavez, who was supposed to start Fri- day against the Baltimore Orioles. It's not certain when Gray will pitch again, but manager Bob Melvin has ruled out the possibility of Gray going Friday, so someone like left-hander Brad Mills could be called up from Triple-A Nashville. Chavez, meanwhile, was nearly good enough against the Blue Jays as Gray's re- placement. Chavez used his cutter to strike out nine in six innings. He walked none. But he had one bad in- ning, giving up four runs in the second, that includ- ing a three-run homer by Ryan Goins and three sin- gles. The Blue Jays completed the three-game sweep of the Athletics with the 4-2 win that gave them an 11- game winning streak to equal their franchise best. Chavez admits that in the second he became caught up in the quick pace of his mound oppo- nent Mark Buehrle, a left- hander renowned for work- ing at a rapid pace. "I let that inning kind of get ahead of me a lit- tle," Chavez said. "I got caught up in (Mark) Bueh- rle's good pace a little bit. I was trying to do the same thing." Chavez said it came down to "just one pitch" to Goins. "Trying to go up and in," Chavez said. "He just got the hands out and beat me to it. I thought it was a good pitch and it was out of the zone. Here if you get the ball up it's got a chance to go. He got it up and it went." BASEBALL A's swept by red-hot Toronto Chavez starts in place of Gray, out with back spasms I'll try to make the most of it," said Mowins, who has been calling college foot- ball games on ESPN for a decade. "To be able to do it with the Raiders is pretty cool. I'm friends with Gayle Sirens so it's pretty cool that it has come back full circle and the opportunity is there for me." Mowins was at the top of the list of potential broadcasters when Raid- ers owner Mark Davis de- cided he wanted a dedi- cated television crew for preseason games this year instead of simulcasting the radio broadcast. Vittorio DeBartolo, the vice president, executive producer for the Raid- ers, was tasked with put- ting together a team and quickly focused on Mow- ins. He was intrigued by the trailblazing aspect of the hire for an organization that had hired the first fe- male CEO in league history (Amy Trask), the first black coach in modern history (Art Shell) and the second Hispanic coach in league history (Tom Flores). Watching tapes of her college broadcasts solidi- fied the decision and Da- vis was quickly impressed. "I think people are kind of curious at first," De- Bartolo said. "Most peo- ple who don't know Beth don't know how quali- fied she is. Once they read her resume and look at what she's done, it's a no- brainer. It was something we could build on and it kind of went in that direc- tion." Raiders FROM PAGE 1 last season while recov- ering. That long process, Bowman said, was boring and lonely. "It's a gut check, be- cause you ask yourself, 'Do you really want to do it?' sometimes," Bowman said. "Those are the things that go through rehabilitation, is just fighting through those tough days when your knee is sore." Bowman was activated to the 53-man roster dur- ing his rehabilitation on Dec. 9, but never practiced, and was placed on season- ending injured reserve four days later. Although Bowman isn't quite back to peak form, his presence in the middle of San Francisco's defense on the practice field is felt. The coaching and medical staffs are working closely with Bowman to ensure he doesn't put undue stress on his knee, which is why many of his practice reps are not full speed. Bowman has been forced to wear a bulky knee brace during team drills. When Bowman has gone full tilt in training camp, he's shown flashes of the player that garnered De- fensive Player of the Year consideration in 2013, when he led the 49ers with 143 tackles, five sacks and four forced fumbles. During the first prac- tice of training camp, Bow- man blitzed Colin Kaepe- rnick using a swift spin move on right guard Mar- cus Martin, leaving Martin flat footed for a sack. "He's looking 100 percent out there," Martin said later. "He's rolling right now." In a practice this week, Bowman sacked Kaeper- nick and intercepted him on consecutive plays. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 the par 5s even though one was just a par. But it was a big one. He pulled his third shot into the water and a double bogey looked likely. But his ball was sit- ting up in the water, so Mc- Ilroy rolled up his pant leg, splashed it out to 7 feet and saved par. "The only thing I was trying not to do was get my feet wet," McIlroy said. "Because if the water gets through this shoe, then the tape gets wet and then that would be a little more than just sort of annoy- ing or uncomfortable for the rest of the day. But it was fine. It was a little bit deeper on the right side, so I just rolled my right trou- ser leg up and it was fine. I just had to remember to hit it hard. And I was very fortunate to escape with a par there." That shot made for good TV. Good for his soul was getting that first tee shot out of the way, and espe- cially the 3-wood he hit pure as ever onto the green at the par-5 second that led to birdie. "That was full bore, as good as I can do," McIlroy said. Spieth was far more boring in opening with 10 pars, and he was far more irritated. The Masters and U.S. Open champion had one birdie chance after another on the front nine and missed them all, trying to get the speed right and wondering how much the wind would affect it. "I guessed wrong," he said. Golf FROM PAGE 1 was suspended four games by the NFL and the team was docked $1 million and two draft picks, but Brady's suspension is now in the courts. Patriots fans have never wavered in their support of the three-time Super Bowl MVP, holding "Free Tom Brady" rallies and calling on the team not to raise the championship banner before the Sept. 10 season opener if Brady isn't there. Just in case, the Patri- ots need to get Garoppolo ready. The second-year sec- ond-stringer handed off to Jonas Gray on a 55- yard touchdown run, then pitched it to Gray for the 2-point conversion. In the second half, he was inter- cepted by LaDarius Gunter, who returned it 28 yards to the Packers 29. Two plays later, Har- ris ran it 25 yards for his touchdown. Rookie Brett Hundley completed a 10-yard pass to John Crockett midway through the fourth quar- ter to give the Packers a 22-11 lead. Brady made his first en- trance on the field at 6:43 p.m., about an hour be- fore kickoff, drawing a cheer from the few thou- sand or so fans already in the building. After retreat- ing to the locker room, he led the team onto the field through the tunnel to a huge ovation. The Patriots started on defense, then took over at their 2 yard-line. Brady's first pass was badly over- thrown, and his second went through Josh Boyce's hands.
