ByDougFerguson The Associated Press SHEBOYGAN, WIS. Rory Mc- Ilroy rolled up the right leg of his pants to take on a risky shot out of the water. Jordan Spieth, who seems to never miss putts, couldn't make one. Familiarity of the final major of the year came from Dustin Johnson. He was in the lead Thursday after the opening round of the PGA Champion- ship, a spot he already has occu- pied after five of 13 rounds this year in the majors — just not on the day the trophy is awarded. Bouncing back from a sum- mer of disappointment, John- son breezed his way to a 6-un- der 66 in moderate morning con- ditions at Whistling Straits and wound up with a one-shot lead over David Lingmerth of Swe- den. Jason Day, who also knows about hard luck in the majors, and Matt Kuchar were in a large group at 68. "We'll just have to see what happens," Johnson said. "It's only the first round. We've still got a lot of golf to play." The main event was McIlroy (No. 1) and Spieth (No. 2), who have won four of the last five majors and played in the same group. Round 1 was a draw. Both shot 71, a reasonable start considering the blustery conditions off Lake Michigan. Tom Brady completed one of four passes be- fore giving way to Jimmy Garop- polo, and the New England Pa- triots fell 22-11 to the Green Bay Packers in both teams' exhibi- tion opener on Thursday night. A day after appearing before a federal judge hearing the appeal of his "Deflategate" suspension, Brady played just two series — a three-and-out and a four-and- out. Garoppolo, who would fill in for Brady if any part of the Su- per Bowl MVP's four-game sus- pension is upheld, played three quarters plus one play. He went 20 for 30 for 159 yards, no touch- downs and one interception, and was sacked seven times. Aaron Rodgers completed 11 of 19 passes for 117 yards for Green Bay. Backup Scott Tolzien was 10 for 16 for 107 yards and a 26-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Janis. Alonzo Harris ran for a 25-yard touchdown for the 2014 NFC North winners. Brady led the Super Bowl champions onto the field to a loud cheer from the fans that have refused to believe he was involved in a scheme to illegally deflate the footballs used in the AFC championship game. By Chris Biderman The Associated Press SANTA CLARA In a trying offsea- son for the San Francisco 49ers that featured a number of key losses, one star player's comeback is providing a glimmer of hope. Inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman is nearing the end of the road in his recovery from surgery on his left knee. After donning pads for the first time in nearly 19 months to start training camp, he is questionable to play in Saturday's preseason opener against the Houston Tex- ans, head coach Jim Tomsula said Thursday. Having lost the likes of Pat- rick Willis, Justin Smith and Al- don Smith, Bowman understands how his return might help his team without the trio that com- bined for 13 Pro Bowls. "I was a young guy," Bowman said. "Just to see older guys go down at some point in the sea- son, when they came back, the morale of the team changed. You could just feel it. If the guys look at (my return) that way, then I'm grateful." FOOTBALL Cardinals to open with Las Plumas at home By Josh Dubow The Associated Press NAPA Beth Mowins has spent her accomplished career as a play- by-play announcer trying to tell the story, not be it. That will change Friday night when she becomes just the sec- ond woman play-by-play an- nouncer ever for an NFL game. Mowins will han- dle the Bay Area broadcast of the Oakland Raiders' exhibition game against the St. Louis Rams, 28 years after Gayle Sirens broke the barrier when she broadcast a late- season game on NBC between Se- attle and Kansas City. That turned out to be the only NFL game Sirens ever broadcast and it took nearly three decades for another woman to get the chance. The game will be broad- cast locally in the Bay Area and will be aired later Friday night on a tape-delayed basis on the NFL Network.
