NHATV.MEYER—BAYAREANEWSGROUP The San Francisco Giants' Buster Posey watches his ball go foul against the Houston Astros in the sixth inning at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Wednesday. ByAndrewBaggarly BayAreaNewsGroup SAN FRANCISCO Nori Aoki joked that he took so many concussion tests that they gave him a concus- sion. It's not a laughing matter now. The San Francisco Giants re- placed Aoki after four innings of Wednesday's 2-0 loss to the Hous- ton Astros because of lightheaded- ness, and manager Bruce Bochy ac- knowledged there was a "good pos- sibility" that his leadoff-hitting left fielder would go on the 7-day concus- sion disabled list. "We're treating him at this time for a concussion," Bochy said. "He showed symptoms. He'll get re-eval- uated, and we'll decide what we're going to do. … My guess is we'll have to be careful here." The Giants' roster issues go be- yond merely finding a replacement for Aoki. Their bench is more ultra- light than a hang glider attached to a leaf blower. And their output against Scott Feldman, the Astros' No. 5 starter, was symptomatic of a club missing three regulars in Aoki, Angel Pagan and Joe Panik. Club officials have acknowledged interest in Phillies second baseman Chase Utley, who reportedly has cleared waivers and is owed roughly $6 million including the $2 million buyout on his team option for next season. The Phillies face no restric- tion to trade Utley beyond his full veto rights, and San Francisco makes too much sense: His wife is from the Bay Area, he lives in Sausalito in the offseason, and he is good friends with former Giants player and scout Pat Burrell. "I'm sure everybody would say they'd like another bat," Bochy said. "It's not that easy. Rory McIlroy faces a different set of questions from the last time he played, and he had answers for most of them. His left ankle, with swelling the size of a tennis ball after he heard it snap while playing soc- cer with friends in early July, felt fine when he got off the plane and began preparing for the final ma- jor of the year. His game is good, and he sees no one reason why that will change when the PGA Championship starts Thursday. One other question was little more tricky. Who's the best player in the world? McIlroy is No. 1 in the world ranking. He also has watched Jor- dan Spieth produce an inspiring year in golf by winning the Mas- ters and U.S. Open, and then com- ing within one shot of a playoff at the British Open. Spieth has four wins this year, one more than Mc- Ilroy, though two of them are ma- jors. PGA CHAMPIONSHIP McIlroy to deal with Spieth in top battle By Josh Dubow The Associated Press NAPA Amari Cooper is willing to let other people get excited about his exhibition debut for the Oak- land Raiders. For the rookie receiver, Friday night's game against the St. Louis Rams is just another step in his transition from top college wide- out to NFL player. "I've always been all business like," he said Wednesday. "I just want to go out there and play an excellent game. There might be some mistakes but I'll deal with them then." The anticipation for Cooper has been palpable ever since the Raiders selected him fourth over- all in the NFL draft back in April. The former Alabama star is being counted on to give the Raiders the game-breaking receiver they have lacked for the past decade. Cooper has lived up to his lofty billing as one of the most pro-ready receivers to come out of college in years with his play RAIDERS CAMP Cooper plays down debut in 1st exhibition Huge explosions at a ware- house for dangerous materials in the northeastern Chinese port of Tianjin killed at least 17people, injured hundreds and sent massive fireballs into the night sky, officials said. Coach Corey Hein said he has a tight-knit group of young play- ers that has put in a lot of work and the key to a successful season will be for the team to gel quickly when the team takes the field Aug. 28 against Central Valley in a nonconference home game. "It's an awesome group of kids that has worked hard all sum- mer," Hein said. "They'll have to grow up fast, on the fly." Many of the players were mem- bers of the Red Bluff Little League baseball team that made it one step away from the Little League World Series a few years back, so Hein said they know how to win. Pointing to quarterback Wes Clawson, running backs Joey Dagen and David Stroud and re- ceiver Lane Pritchard, Hein said that despite being a young of- fense, the skill positions are all top notch players. Center Ryan Gamboa will an- chor the offensive line alongside guard Owen Swarthout and left tackle Kegan Richards. Other spots were still being decided this week, on both the line and at skill positions.
