Dinner tickets are on sale now for $20 per plate. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Over the closing weeks of last season, Steve Addington had been led to believe he would be Tony Stewart's crew chief in 2012. Then Stewart won at Martinsville and again at Texas to give him four wins in eight races. The Sprint Cup championship was firmly in his reach, and it sure didn't seem like there were any reasons for Stewart to make changes to his organization. Addington, laid back by nature, watched and waited. But when Stewart capped off his remarkable title run by winning the season-finale at Home- stead to snatch the championship away from Carl Edwards, Addington finally got nervous. A text message from Stewart calmed him a bit. ''I'm laying in the bed ... sitting there thinking, 'What's this guy think- ing? They just won a championship. Are they going to change their minds?''' Addington recalled. ''Could- n't sleep and then the phone blew up — I got the text of, 'No pressure, bud.''' And so the plan was set in place: Addington announced he was leaving Penske Racing after a tumultuous tenure with Kurt Busch and moving to Stewart-Haas Racing to crew chief the defending NASCAR champion. Darian Grubb, despite guiding Stewart to five wins in the final 10 races of the season, was out of a job, and fans couldn't understand why Stewart would make such wholesale changes. Stewart also successfully recruited Greg Zipadelli, his former longtime crew chief at Joe Gibbs Racing, to leave that team and join SHR as com- petition director. Now, as the defending champion heads this week to Daytona Interna- tional Speedway for the start of the 2012 season, he's got to prove he did- n't make a mistake in overhauling his organization. In true Stewart form, though, he's scoffing at the notion he's under any pressure. ''You're asking the wrong guy,'' he said before motioning toward Adding- ton. ''You need to ask him. I feel just fine.'' Then Stewart continued, explaining he's known Addington for years — both were at Joe Gibbs Racing togeth- er — and their personalities fit. 7:30 p.m. 3 p.m. 70 33 33 57 Maggie Keller: 21 pts, 10 rebs 38 63 30 70 Sports BOYS HOOPS 65 Red Bluf 40f Pleasant Valley By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor The Red Bluff Spar- tans took themselves out of the game, Wednesday night, with a horrendous first quarter that prevent- ed any chance they had to snap their years-long los- ing streak to Pleasant Valley. The Vikings rolled up a 22-3 first quarter on their way to a 65-40 win and beat the Spartans for the 13th straight time in the process. When the Spartans weren't turning the ball over themselves the first quarter, Pleasant Valley's Blake Marchant was helping them do so. After ringing home a 3-pointer, Marchant picked off the Spartans on back-to-back posses- sions and converted them both for layups. The 9-0 run to start the game would be just the beginning. Trailing 14-0 just 4:25 into the game Red Bluff coach Stan Twitchell pulled all five starters. While Mike Nichols finally put the Spartans on the board with a 3- pointer even the change of players didn't make much of a difference. Red Bluff finally set- tled down in the second quarter and outscored Pleasant Valley 18-14. At one point the Spartans got the game within 11 points, but it would be as close as they would get. The Vikings countered with an 11-3 run to stretch their lead back out. Pleasant Valley opened the second half by extending their lead back to 20 and sealing the game. Nichols had a trio of 3-pointers to lead Red Bluff with nine points. Jake Avila added two more to finish with six points. Evan Sinclair and Mitch Robison each had five points. Curtis Twitchell and Jonah McInnis had four points each. Taylor Blaser was held to three points and Lucas Burns and Garrett Sandow each had a field goal. Pleasant Valley had three players in double digits and a fourth with nine points. Marchant led the way with 17. Kameron Bradley added 12 and James Makel had 10 points. Red Bluff hasn't defeated Pleasant Valley since Feb. 18, 2005. The Spartans came into the game with a bet- ter record than Pleasant Valley, but dropped to 10-14 overall and 5-6 in league play. Red Bluff closes out the regular season by traveling to Las Plumas on Friday and then host- ing Oroville on Tuesday. Lin, Knicks beat Kings NEW YORK (AP) — Not needed to save the Knicks again, Jeremy Lin grabbed a spot on the bench next to Carmelo Anthony in the third quarter and shared a laugh with the injured All- Star. ''We were just having fun and kind of talking about how we're both excited for when he comes back,'' Lin said. Hey 'Melo, no need to rush. Lin and the Knicks just keep on winning. Lin put aside his record- setting scoring to hand out a career-best 13 assists, and New York got back to .500 with its seventh straight vic- tory, 100-85 over the Sacra- mento Kings on Wednesday night. MCT file photo Tony Stewart celebrates the 2011 Sprint Cup championship. ''We're just low key, down-to-earth racers and hardcore racers that want to race. That is the attitude that Steve has coming in here,'' Stewart said. ''I'm not putting any pressure on him. I'm looking forward to going out and rac- ing again.'' But Addington knows that if Stew- art doesn't successfully defend his title, the finger likely will be pointed at him. He has never won a title at a NASCAR's national level, despite tak- ing Kyle Busch as the top seed in the Chase for the Sprint Cup champi- onship. He believes he and Stewart can do it. ''I know a lot of people are going to look at it like, 'You're the only thing that's changed on that race team.' That's true,'' Addington said. ''I feel good about it. I'm confident enough in my position and experience in races to give him what he needs in a race car.'' The competition will be tight this year, especially at JGR, where Grubb has landed. When Stewart let Grubb go after their title run, Grubb had his pick of jobs and settled on the crew chief posi- tion for Denny Hamlin, who's coming off a disappointing season that saw the driver fall considerable from his near- championship run in 2010. Grubb insists there's no driving desire to one-up Stewart, but he's moti- vated to take Hamlin to his first cham- pionship. ''No matter what happens when you are in a long-term relationship — you can ask your husband or your wife — the communication level is what makes everything work,'' Grubb said of his tenure with Stewart. ''The more you get stagnant, the more you realize what you should have done in the past. Now we're both really looking forward with our eyes wide open.'' JGR also is looking for a rebound from Kyle Busch, who again faltered after being the top seed in the Chase. He was way out of title contention by the time he lost his temper in the Truck Series race at Texas and intentionally wrecked another driver, prompting NASCAR to suspend him for the rest of the weekend. It was a humbling moment for Busch, who had to fight hard to keep his sponsors. Now he's hoping to final- ly put together a complete season and win the Cup championship that has See NASCAR, page 2B Lin added 10 points, focusing more on his role as a distributor while others torched the Kings for 51 per- cent shooting. Landry Fields had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Bill Walker and Steve Novak each chipped in 14 points as the Knicks put seven players in double figures for the first time since April 5, 2009, at Toronto. ''As a point guard, my field goal attempts have been really high and I don't think that's necessarily good,'' Lin said. ''I think it's more of my job to distribute and get people in rhythm.'' Lin scored 136 points in his first five starts, most by any NBA player since the NBA merged with the ABA in 1976. His 3-pointer with 0.5 seconds left Tuesday allowed the Knicks to pull out a 90-87 victory in a game they trailed nearly the whole way. The Knicks (15-15) led this one almost throughout, evening their record for the first time since they were 6- 6 after a loss to Oklahoma City on Jan. 14.
