Walter Gosney Jr., driv- ing the Lassen Auto Stage, had an accident Tuesday afternoon on the Red Bluff- Morgan Springs road near the Battle Creek Ditch, which resulted in the breaking down of the right rear wheel on his automo- bile stage. The spokes all snapped off around the hub. Gibson, also driving one of the Mr. Lassen autos was a short distance be- hind him. Gosney found an opportunity to ride on into Red Bluff and leaving his car in the road came to this city to get repairs, re- turning with a new wheel yesterday morning. About two hours later Gibson returned to the scene of the wreck and dis- covered that some passing tourist had recognized in the broken down car with no one around an oppor- tunity to replenish their own supply of tires, tubes, tools, etc., and had stripped the two rear tires from the wheels, taken all the inner tubes out of the machine and delving into the tool box had helped themselves to every tool in the machine with the exception of a hub cap wrench. Gibson noticed what was missing and immedi- ately telephoned to Gos- ney at Red Bluff who took back extra tires, tubes, and tools, with which to make the necessary repairs. Gosney and Gibson feel that polite language could not paint a word picture of a person or persons who have sunk so low as to find a car wrecked, thirty miles from a garage, and instead of attempting to give relief to its owner, relieved him of the only tools with which he could possibly make repairs that would take him back to civilization. —Aug.11,1915 100YEARSAGO... Passages Health Insur- ance Counseling & Advo- cacy Program (HICAP) is presenting Welcome to Medicare workshops for those turning 65 this year or younger adults who will be entitled to Medicare due to a disability. As people get closer to Medicare eligibility, there are several things to con- sider. In light of the fact that Medicare's coverage is much like employer group coverage it's important to know what questions to ask: How will my retiree plan work with my Medi- care, can I delay enrolling into Medicare and not be penalized, do I need a drug plan and are there pro- grams available to lower my Medicare health and prescription costs? Workshops are sched- uled in Chico 2-4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13 at Lake- side Pavilion, 2565 Lake- side Village; and Red Bluff 1-3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18 at Red Bluff Community Cen- ter, 1500 S. Jackson St. Registration is required by calling 898-6716. This free workshop is designed for baby boomers and oth- ers who will be new to Medicare this year who want to understand how their Medicare benefits work. Family members or caregivers are also wel- come to attend. People who are new to Medicare will be deluged with information from different insurance com- panies marketing their products. Ronda Kramer, program manager for Pas- sages HICAP warns signing up with the wrong plan, or not doing anything may cost new Medicare recipi- ents thousands of dollars, and they may not be able to make changes if enroll- ment deadlines are missed. For more information, call HICAP at Passages at 1-800-434-0222. If your group or agency would like a workshop, contact Kath- erine Tilman at 898-5927.
