8A Daily News – Saturday, February 11, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith Can one experience the greatness of the Divine without prayer? PRAYER LETS US INTERACT WITH GOD Rushdy El-Ghussein, former president of the Islam- ic Society of Greater Kansas City: The greatness of the Divine does not manifest itself only in prayer but in all aspects of our lives. We can see the magnificence and beauty of life and the world around us. The scientist might experience the greatness of God in God's cre- ation and the wonders of science that God has created. A physician may experience Gods' greatness in human anatomy or in the function of the heart or the function of eyes and ears. A parent can see it in the growth of his or her child. Allah the Great manifests himself to us in many ways and forms. We might experience God's greatness in the most awkward places or most frightening situa- tions. Do you imagine the difficulty Mary experienced in carrying baby Jesus? But she never thought that God had abandoned her. Can you imagine how the Pharaoh's wife believed in God regardless of the disbelief that her husband displayed? But there is value in prayer. Instead of simply being amazed or awed from a distance, we can interact with the Divine. We can worship and praise him, ask his aid, repent to him and seek his guidance. It is the mercy of God that sends our way signals to believe in him and to worship him. The lucky ones are those who can see the opportunities God gives us and act upon them. The unfortunate ones are those who ignore these signals and throw themselves into hellfire. PRAYER IS JUST TEMPORARY PATH TO AWARENESS Arvind Khetia, engineer and a Hindu: In Hinduism, the Divine is an all pervading supreme being who is both immanent and transcendent, which cannot be lim- ited by doctrine or dogma or by claiming its exclusivi- ty. To experience the Divine requires constant aware- ness of the Divine. Prayers in everyday religious prac- tice do help one to remember the Divine; however, when prayer ends, one's mind goes back to worldly thoughts. To cultivate constant awareness of the Divine requires recognizing one's divinity and seeing the divine presence in all of creation. In the Bhagavad Gita, Sri Krishna says: "I am ever present to those who have realized me in every creature. Seeing all life as my manifestation, they are never separated from me." To manifest one's divinity, the Gita explains the spiritual disciplines of four primary yogas. (Yoga means the union of individual soul with the universal soul.) In Bhakti Yoga of devotion, prayer is an expres- sion of one's love for God. In Jnana Yoga of knowl- edge, one discriminates between real and unreal. In Karma Yoga of selfless work, one offers the fruits of all labors to the Divine. And in Raja Yoga of medita- tion, one strives for stillness of the mind to experience the Divine. Therefore, the goal of all spiritual practice, with or without prayer, is to cultivate purity of heart and to rec- ognize the greatness of the Divine in all of creation. The so-called war on science We often hear about a so-called war on science – as though it were just another despicable act of the Bush administration. The problem is that those who cry foul are actu- ally the ones creating the destruc- tion of modern science. President Bush was called a Neanderthal for encouraging research on adult stem cell lines and restricting it on embryonic cells. Ten years later there are nearly one hundred therapies developing or already in use from adult cells and zero from the embryonic cell camp despite a six billion dollar invest- ment by California taxpayers alone. Adult cells can now be set for the same creative ability to become any cell desired – once touted as the main advantage of embryonic cells – without the cancerous mutations the embryonic crowd prefers not to mention. Dr. Bernardine Healy, former National Institutes of Health Direc- tor, wrote in 2009, "Embryonic stem cells, once thought to hold the cure for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and diabetes, are obsolete." Her comment follows the 2006 break- through in which adult stem cells – harvestable from multiple areas of living human bodies without harm- ing the humans themselves – were made to replicate the elasticity and variability of the embryonic cells without duplicating the latter's unfortunate tendency to develop mutant malignancies. The scientists who conducted this work received the 2008 "Breakthrough of the Year" award from Science Maga- zine. Embryonic stem cell pioneer Dr. James Thomson predicted at that time, "A decade from now, (ESCR) will be just a funny histori- cal footnote." Yet I can hear the anguished cries of the embryonic stem cell research supporters in my ears even as proof is offered that the conservative position is the pro-sci- ence position, and the principle that what does harm in a God-created world is not doing anyone any good is once again vin- dicated. But who is the Neanderthal here? George Bush was accused of burying his head in the sand over glob- al warming. We now have a regime in Washington that rabidly supports the warm- ing thesis; yet the silence is deafening when propo- nents are asked to back up their claims with new evi- dence. But a steady hand and the heart to honestly wait until the jury is in are enough. NASA satellite telemetry from 2000 to 2011 indicates that far less heat is trapped in the atmosphere and for a shorter time than previ- ously believed. Meanwhile the reports of falsified data and glossed over factors keep mounting. Who is it that ignores or derides the sci- ence of climate change? I don't need to defend the pro- life President Bush; I just need to state that facts are facts, truth is truth, and reality is reality. Yet we have a brand new Supreme Court Justice (Kagan) who literally re- wrote the salient portions of an American Pediatric Society posi- tion paper on late term abortions to make them look medically justifi- able when the original wording stat- ed they were not – and an APS craven enough to adopt the new lan- guage for the sake of political cover. There is indeed a war on science, and it comes from the left. The editorial speaks of the scarcity of private funding for this research. Reality is that private funds are in good supply for the study of adult stem cells in the treat- ment of multiple sclerosis, heart attacks, and diabetes. Money likes NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) — A suburban Philadel- phia prosecutor said Friday she suggested that the coro- ner's office investigate the recent death of a Roman Catholic cardinal because of what she called ''odd'' tim- ing, saying she wanted to put to rest any speculation since he died a day after a judge had found him compe- tent to testify at the child-endangerment trial of his long- time aide. Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua died on Jan. 31 at age 88. Bevilacqua was suffering from dementia and cancer, according to church officials. Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri James Wilson GodTalk to follow success – or at least promise – and the success and the promise are all headed in one direction, not anoth- er. Transplanted adult stem cells have saved hundreds of thousands of patients suffering from leukemia, lymphoma, and other blood diseases. This is the fruit of research dating to the seventies. These cells are even growing skin grafts. In June 2010 researchers reported restoring vision to people blinded by caustic chemicals using adult stem cells. Leaders in the field believe – jus- tifiably – that we have only seen the beginning of what will one day be achieved without harming a single embryo. Social conservatives – including an awful lot of scientists – favor those things that advance human life across the board. (That is why we speak of a culture of life.) They favor these things not because they are anti-science, but because they are pro life, pro truth, and pro reali- ty. It does not get any more pro sci- ence than that. The editorial ends with, "This (ESTR) research is too important to just walk away from it." Actually the sentence should read, "Reality based science is too important to walk away from." But then the politically correct will have to be abandoned in favor of the truth and the war on science will have to be cancelled. And, Praise God, the King Jesus of John 14:6 will be re- enthroned. James A. Wilson is the author of Living As Ambassadors of Relationships and The Holy Spirit and the End Times – available at local bookstores or by e-mailing him at praynorthstate@charter.net. DA: Cardinal's death in Pa. probed amid odd timing Ferman said Friday she learned about the death on the news and was surprised that her office hadn't been noti- fied, given that he died a seminary in her county. ''It struck many of us as odd, as peculiar,'' she said at a news conference. She said she suggested that the coro- ner conduct the investigation ''so we could hopefully put to bed any rumors and speculation.'' Asked whether the review would look into the possi- bility of suicide or euthanasia, she declined to comment. County Coroner Walter Hofman said he was con- ducting toxicology tests on fluid and tissues from Bevilacqua's body.
