8B Daily News – Tuesday, February 7, 2012 Input LEGAL NOTICE sought on Shasta water report The Bureau of Reclama- tion today released a Draft Feasibility Report and Pre- liminary Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Shasta Lake Water Resources Investigation (Shasta Investigation), exam- ining the potential to enlarge Shasta Dam and Reservoir to achieve multiple water resources purposes. The Shasta Investigation is one of five surface water storage studies included in the 2000 CALFED Bay-Delta Pro- grammatic Record of Deci- sion and is a continuing feasi- bility study under the author- ity of Public Law 96-375. Shasta Dam is 602 feet high with a reservoir capacity of 4.55 million acre-feet. Reclamation completed con- struction of the dam and reservoir in 1944 for flood control, irrigation water sup- ply, municipal and industrial water supply, hydropower generation, fish and wildlife conservation and navigation purposes. The draft documents address the potential impacts, costs and benefits of the No Action alternative and five action alternatives evaluated to date. Reclamation and cooperating agencies are ana- lyzing alternative dam raises from 6.5 to 18.5 feet and cor- responding increases of reservoir storage from 256,000 to 634,000 acre feet. Reclamation is releasing these documents to share the information generated since completion of the Plan For- mulation Report in 2007. A complete Draft EIS will be prepared for formal public review and comment, consis- tent with the National Envi- ronmental Policy Act (NEPA), as additional scien- tific information and under- standing of the conditions in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta is developed and incor- porated into the Shasta Inves- tigation. Fish and Game votes against pursuing striped bass proposal The California Fish and Game Commission Thurs- day took final action to reject proposed changes to striped bass regulations. In a unanimous decision, Commissioners voted not to pursue a proposal that would have changed sport fishing regulations related to anadromous striped bass, including increasing bag limits and decreasing size limits. The proposal that was introduced by the Depart- ment of Fish and Game arose out of a settlement agreement resulting from a 2008 lawsuit. In that law- suit, the Coalition for a Sus- tainable Delta, a group of San Joaquin Valley water districts, asserted that striped bass are harming native species, including endangered salmon and Delta smelt.
