ByJamesWilson Itwasraining throughout Central and Southern Cali- fornia in May. This is a praise to the Lord, but not the coming millennium. We have had abundant rains from time to time and waters literally bub- bling from the ground fill- ing dry riverbeds the past year. God's mercy came when we needed it most; it hasn't seriously dented the parched state of our state. Neither will this. Reality has been dem- onstrated that our drought is of supernatural causation. There is simply no natural explanation for the lingering high pres- sure ridge over Califor- nia deflecting storms nat- urally approaching with- out falling on us. There is a biblical explanation for people open-minded enough to seek answers wherever they may be found. 2 Chronicles 7:13-14 claims whenever drought persists we should look to our own recurrent behav- ior. God then prescribes humbling ourselves, seek- ing His face in prayer and repentance — He speaks here to those of us who recognize His sovereignty; there is no effort to coerce the unconverted — He will literally hear, forgive, and heal. I have seen doc- umented fruit of this pro- cess in diverse locations like Guatemala, Hawaii, and Fiji. The criteria for crisis is the repetitive presence of covenant breaking, sexual sin, idolatry, and the shed- ding of innocent blood. We face a state government that increasingly disre- gards our constitutions — state and federal — from placing water meters on privately owned wells to expelling from univer- sity campuses Christian groups who expect to be led by professing Chris- tians. During recent riots Oakland police were for- bidden to protect life and property. So much for cov- enant break- ing. And lest we say, "But we citi- zens are not the government…" let us remember who keeps vot- ing lawless peo- ple into office. As to the other crite- ria, reflect that the worldwide pornogra- phy industry is centered in Southern California to acknowledge the sexual sin piece. We need look only to our governor's vi- sionless strategy to raise Shasta Dam and so in- crease our capacity to store the water we do not have — and build tunnels through the Sacramento River Delta — to transfer water Northern California doesn't have to a South- ern California that doesn't have it — to demonstrate our idolatry of our own in- genuity. A California lead- ing the nation in butcher- ing Native Americans over two centuries while out- stripping other states in elective abortions and sui- cides tops out in shedding innocent blood. Now our leaders want to legalize as- sisted suicide and compel those who would save un- born lives through preg- nancy care centers to refer their clients for abortion services. We-the-people put these butchers in of- fice; we are responsible. I deliberately paint the picture in stark terms for the sake of the good news which lightens it. The Lord moved dramatically when Ancient Israel ex- ercised 2 Chronicles. The United States exists to- day because George Wash- ington's army was spared destruction on Long Is- land when the Lord hid it from the attacking British through a weather miracle after it was surrounded; this followed prayer and fasting. The Battle of Get- tysburg — turning point of the Civil War — followed by weeks the 1863 Lincoln proclaimed Day of Fasting and Prayer. We in Califor- nia have the same oppor- tunity. The California Day of Repentance is set for Wednesday, September 9, California's Admission Day. Unlike the half dozen or so other states who have held such a day with the support of their state governors, ours will be a totally grassroots effort. This makes it that much better for the state as we invite leaders in the po- litical, cultural, scientific, business, and Body-of- Christ spheres to bless the day sponsored by National Day of Repentance, Cali- fornia Governor's Prayer Team, and PrayNorth- State. As in other events sharing this sponsorship, no effort is made to get ministries and communi- ties to conform to some master plan of repen- tance. More information can be had at www.dayo- frepentance1.org in terms of what some are plan- ning, but everyone is free to observe the day as they feel led. What matters is Cali- fornians Christians recog- nizing this drought comes not for destruction, but to get our attention. God has promised — and birthed — a Great Awakening that will resurrect California on many levels — if we re- ceive it. Our ticket to par- ticipation is to repent and re-focus on Him. This is a win-win situa- tion those of us who know Christ. If He is as good as I know Him to be; Cali- fornia Christians (and any who choose to throw in with us) get on the road to recovering our identity in Christ and resurrecting our state. Of course there is an alternative for those who think repentance a waste of time. They can raise the top of Shasta Dam to better store all that water we don't have. GOD TALK A California Day of Repentance Wilson The first Sunday of Au- gust marks the first anni- versary of the Independent Lutheran Church of Corn- ing. During its first year the church has accomplished many of the goals it set out to accomplish from its in- ception. The first of these goals was to bring the Gospel to the people of Corning, es- pecially those who did not or could not attend reli- gious services elsewhere. To this end the church conducts two services each week, an 11 a.m. Sun- day service and a 5 p.m. Wednesday service. It also holds a Ladies Bi- ble Study at 1 p.m. Tues- days and hosts a program called Bridging the Gap at 7 p.m. Thursdays. Bridging the Gap is a Christ centered program for Christian liv- ing. Beginning Aug. 15 the church will offer Adult In- formation Classes open to anyone interested in learn- ing more about what Lu- therans believe, teach and confess. All services and activities take place at 1620 Solano St., Ste. B in Corning, on Houghton Avenue between Solano and Yolo streets. In keeping with its ad- opted motto of serving Christ by serving Corning, the church has conducted several fundraisers. Mem- bers have raised more than $2,000 directly benefiting local residents with finan- cial assistance or material needs. They also actively partici- pate in and support numer- ous community and charity events. The anniversary service will be conducted during the 11 a.m. Sunday service Aug. 2. A celebratory party is scheduled from noon un- til 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8 at the Woodson Bridge Estates Clubhouse, 3835 Gardiner Ferry Road out- side Corning. The party will be an open-house type event and will in- clude food and games of all sorts and for all ages. The public is invited to at- tend. The church is a mem- ber of the Independent Lu- theran Diocese. To learn more, call Dennis Wyman at 824-5609. The public is encouraged to visit the church's booth during the Corning Olive Festival on Aug. 22 at Woodson Park in Corning. INDEPENDENT LUTHERAN Corningchurchcelebratesfirstanniversary Calvary Chapel Red Bluff will be hosting two Vaca- tion Bible School events in August. Kids can attend one or both. Saturday, Aug. 1 will be Summer Jam, a special one- day event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for kids entering 4th through 6th grades. Je- sus and Me, or JAM, is the theme for the day, helping kids to better understand God made them to have a relationship with Him. Get ready for an awesome day with Bible teaching, crafts and a barbecue lunch. At the end of the day kids can experience the obsta- cle challenge course. Bring a towel and prepare to get wet and muddy. A Vacation Bible School adventure about the armor of God for children pre- kindergarten through 5th grade is scheduled 9 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. Aug. 3-7. Pre- pare to travel to a land of castles, knights and war- riors as you participate in a one of a kind quest. You will visit the castle scribe, alche- mist, theatre, armory and blacksmith as well as the traveling tinkerer, training ground and storyteller be- fore your quest is through. Through all the excitement remember, "Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong." 1 Corinthians 16:13 Pre-register your kids now at Calvary Chapel Red Bluff, 527-8219. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. for both events at 12375 Paskenta Road, Red Bluff. For more information, call 527-8219.
