Friday, February 3, 2012 – Daily News 7A WORLD BRIEFING Huffington Post to launch live streaming network NEW YORK (AP) — AOL and the Huffington Post are launching a live video network that aims to combine broadcast news with social media. The Huffington Post Streaming Network was previewed Thursday at AOL's Manhattan head- quarters. The online net- work will launch this summer, streaming news video live 12 hours a day on weekdays, expanding to 16 hours a day next year. The Huffington Post, which AOL purchased for $315 million a year ago, is dedicating 100 employ- ees to the project. It will be webcast from studios in New York and Los Angeles, as well a satel- lite studio in Washington. Huffington Post found- ing editor Roy Sekoff, who will head the net- work, declined to say how much AOL is spending, but called it a ''substantial investment.'' He likened the network to a ''never- ending talk show'' that will ''mirror the Internet experience.'' On Wednesday, AOL Inc. reported sharply lower fourth-quarter net income, but a rise of 10 percent in ad revenue. In shifting from the obsolete business of dial-up Inter- net to a contemporary media company, AOL has sought to invest in the content business, a philos- ophy AOL CEO Tim Armstrong reiterated Thursday. Punxsutawney Phil predicts more winter PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylva- nia's Punxsutawney Phil told people to prepare for six more weeks of winter on Thursday, making him the minority opinion among his groundhog brethren who seem to think that spring is com- ing early. But with such a mild and relatively snowless winter so far, who can tell the difference? Phil's ''prediction'' came as he emerged from his lair to ''see'' his shad- ow on Gobbler's Knob, a tiny hill in the town for which he's named about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. Yet groundhogs in at least five other states — West Virginia's French Creek Freddie, Georgia's Gen. Beauregard Lee, Michigan's Woody the Woodchuck, Ohio's Buckeye Chuck and New York's Staten Island Chuck (full name: Charles G. Hogg) — did not see their shadows. Nor did Ontario's Wiarton Willie or Nova Scotia's Shubenacadie Sam. The Groundhog Day celebration is rooted in a German superstition that says if a hibernating ani- mal casts a shadow on Feb. 2, the Christian holi- day of Candlemas, winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow is seen, legend says, spring will come early. Lorena Beniquez, the commissioner of the film office, was quick to jump on the news that officials in Hoboken, N.J. had refused to issue a permit for the new reality show that will feature hard-par- tying stars Nicole ''Snoo- ki'' Polizzi and Jenni ''JWoww'' Farley. So, Beniquez thought, why not invite the ''Jer- sey Shore'' stars to the borough of the same name — about 140 miles northwest of Philadel- phia and only slightly farther than that from Hoboken? Failing that, Beniquez is hoping the producers might consider shooting in Williamsport, the Lycoming County seat. Inmate adds pig image to Vt. police cruiser decals MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — A Vermont prison inmate who makes stationery and license plates has gotten the best of the state police by adding the image of a pig to the state decal on their cruis- ers. One of the spots on the cow in the state crest has been changed to the shape of a pig, a deroga- tory term for police. The 16-inch car door decals are made by prisoners in Windsor. State police discov- ered the pig images Wednesday. They say they believe the decals have been added to about 30 cruisers in the past year. Who made the modifi- cation and when is being reviewed by the Depart- ment of Corrections. Corrections Commis- sioner Andy Pallito said Thursday new decals will be made by Monday for about $800. The Burlington Free Press newspaper first reported the pig decals. Lions can't quite keep intruders out COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — With 120 lions, tigers and other big cats on the grounds, the owner of a Colorado refuge didn't think he needed a security sys- tem. Nick Sculac says he changed his mind after two January break-ins at Serenity Springs Wildlife Center, 20 miles east of Colorado Springs. The Colorado Springs Gazette reports someone scaled a 10- foot fence lined with barbed wire and cut a hole in a cage, letting three tigers out. Work- ers found the tigers roaming the compound the next morning. Days later, employ- ees arriving for work found two people inside the compound trying to pet a cougar through its cage. Sculac says they scaled the outer fence and drove away. Sculac says nobody was hurt. He says he hired a guard and is shopping for a security system.
