Even the front side, the wind was howling and it was blowing straight left-to-right pretty much. It played very tough all day." Danny Willett of Eng- land had to cope with the wind, too, and he had a 3-under 69 to walk off the 18th green with his name atop the leaderboard at 9-under 135. "Yeah, I think it's a childhood dream and look- ing up there it's still a lit- tle bit surreal, but some- thing I'm going to have to get used to," Willett said. "Otherwise, no point in be- ing up there. We're going to try and rest up and then try and go out for another good weekend and hope- fully, we can be up there in two days' time." Watson wasn't the only player to bid farewell to the Old Course. Nick Faldo, the three- time Open champion re- garded as Britain's great- est champion, came out of the TV tower to play St. Andrews one last time. He switched into a sweater that he wore for his first Open title in 1987 at Muir- field, thrust his arms in the air atop the Swilcan Bridge, and saved par for a 71. And then there was Woods, headed toward the wrong kind of history. Bar- ring a burst of birdies when he returns Saturday morn- ing — the kind of form he has not shown in two years — he was likely to miss the cut in the U.S. Open and the British Open for the first time in the same year. Woods was 5 over with seven holes to play. So much attention has been on Spieth and Jor- dan, the main characters from the drama that played out at Chambers Bay last month. Johnson had a 12- foot eagle putt on the final hole to win the U.S. Open, and three-putted to finish one shot behind golf's new golden child. The wind was fierce, tax- ing shots with every club in the bag down to the putter. Johnson continued to hammer away with his driver, setting up birdies, and he looked every bit like the player to beat. Spi- eth got in enough trouble off the tee that he often left long-range putts that led to bogeys instead of birdies. Behind them, a long list of players lined up to take their shot on the weekend. Jason Day, in conten- tion at Chambers Bay even though he battled symp- toms of vertigo, was at 8-under par through 11 holes. Paul Lawrie, the '99 champion at Carnoustie, also was at 8 under through 12 holes. Louis Oosthuizen, who won the claret jug the last time the Open came to St. Andrews, was at 7 under through 11 holes. Among those who man- aged to finish was Adam Scott, a former Masters champion who is starting to feel the void of giving away the British Open at Royal Lytham & St. Annes in 2012 when he bogeyed the last four holes. Scott was in control in blus- tery weather, flighting his ball low and judging the bounce to perfect. He made three birdies around the loop at the far end of the course and closed with a birdie for a 67. Golf FROM PAGE 1 (this year) and I feel like last year we were fighting for wins," Logano said. "So we just need to find a little bit more speed." Logano was runner-up last week to Kyle Busch at Kentucky and credited a new rules package that in- cluded lower downforce as the spark his team needed to get the No. 22 Ford roll- ing into contention. "Last week in Kentucky, there were a lot of un- knowns and it ended up putting on a great race, I thought," Logano said. "We had a very fast car. Both of our Team Penske cars were fast, so any time there's a rules change it presents a huge opportunity to take advantage of developing something quicker than the rest of the teams out there." Logano and Penske teammate Brad Kesel- owski not only have cam- eos in "Sharknado," they swept the Magic Mile last season. Keselowski won in July and both drivers qual- ified for the Chase. They'd each love to taste the lobster, then kiss the bricks for owner Roger Penske. Juan Pablo Montoya de- livered the 16th Indianap- olis 500 victory for Pen- ske in May. But The Cap- tain has yet to win at the Brickyard in the Cup se- ries. Aside from Keselows- ki's 2012 win in the inau- gural Nationwide race on the 2.5-mile oval, little has gone right for Penske in In- dianapolis. Logano wanted to be the driver to bring home an Indy victory for his boss. "We talk a lot at Team Penske about how bad Roger wants it and what we've got to do to try to win that race," he said. "There are a lot of unknowns go- ing into that race with the rules package coming up for that." Teams will use a higher drag rules package next week at Indianapolis Mo- tor Speedway and next month at Michigan Inter- national Speedway. For Indy and Michigan, the aero package will fea- ture a 9-inch spoiler and 1-inch wicker bill; a rear fascia extension panel sim- ilar to what is currently used for superspeedway events; a 2-inch leading edge on the splitter; and a 43-inch splitter exten- sion panel. That high drag package could cut speeds by nearly 10 mph. Logano FROM PAGE 1 be the first woman to call a regular-season game. That was Shannon Eastin in 2012 when the NFL used replacement officials dur- ing a labor dispute. But she will be the first one getting a full season — and a lot of attention along the way. "I certainly wouldn't want that attention," said a chuckling Aaron Santi, one of nine other first-year offi- cials likely to get that wish. "It's going to be tougher for her. She's going to be un- der the microscope a little more because the reality is this is a really difficult job and we all make mistakes. Hopefully the fans and the public and the media will allow her to make mistakes and not treat her with a dif- ferent standard than any- one else." Thomas, who will be a line judge in 2015, is al- ready the first female offi- cial in major college foot- ball, and the first to work a bowl game. She's been in the NFL's development pro- gram for two years, so she has done training camps and preseason games. As for the novelty of be- ing an NFL regular, long- time referee Ed Hochuli says that will wear off fast. "It'll be a big deal for the first few games," Hochuli said. "Then it will go away. And then it's a matter of are you right or wrong in your calls and you're just an- other official out there and you get treated the same." Thomas, who grew up and still lives in Missis- sippi, recalled the story of her first game as an official, when she was asked to be the clock operator and told one of her mentors that she didn't even know where the clock was. Thomas was a basketball player in high school and college and never worried about find- ing the clock. "So he said, 'Well, we can train monkeys to do the clock, and we're just short of them tonight, so it's your job,"' Thomas said. "That's how I got introduced." Thomas FROM PAGE 1 "Just happy to tick that day off. One day closer to Paris now," he said. For most of the flat-to- hilly Stage 13 from Muret deep in southern France, six low-placed riders rode in a breakaway at the front of the race. None were a threat for the po- dium in Paris. The closest to Froome, Cyril Gautier, was more than an hour behind him in the overall standings. So Froome and the main pack happily let the escape get away, hop- ing instead for a breather on the 123-mile trek af- ter three grueling days of climbing in the Pyrenees and under unrelenting sun that melted tarmac. Riding past plantations of yellow sunflowers and golden fields of harvested wheat, the riders worked on staying hydrated as temperatures soared into the mid-90s. A loss of con- centration proved very painful for Jean-Chris- tophe Peraud. Last year's runner-up suffered a nasty spill at speed on the flat, tearing strips of skin off his left leg and arms as he hit the deck hard and rolled several times. The French leader of the AG2R La Mon- diale team gingerly picked himself up and remounted, gritting his teeth. A Tour doctor then patched him up on the move, wrapping his wounds in bandages as Peraud gripped the speed- ing medical car. "When it's hot like that, you need a new bottle of water every 10-15 min- utes," said Froome. "It was tough." And it got tougher. As the finish in Ro- dez drew close, the pelo- ton woke from its slumber. Like mice trying to escape a hunting cat, the escapees rode furiously, eyeing the stage win.
