Manning: No plans to retire INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — For all the things that are still up in the air, Peyton Manning is cer- tain about this much: He isn't ready to retire yet. ''I have no plans on doing that,'' he said Tues- day. Manning finds himself in a kind of limbo. The Super Bowl is being played in his town at the end of a season in which he didn't play even one minute. An iron man for 13 seasons, he's strug- gling to recover from three neck surgeries over the course of 19 months. A four-time MVP, he's one of the game's most recognizable faces. Yet it's his shadow and the question of whether Man- ning will ever play again that looms over the sea- son's biggest game. ''My plan hasn't changed,'' he told reporters at a hotel after media day at Lucas Oil Stadium featuring the Giants and Patriots. ''I'm on track with what the doctors have told me to do, and I'm doing that. I'm rehabbing hard.'' All the attention focused on his condition is misplaced, Manning said earlier in a taped interview with ESPN. ''I really don't think it will be as the week goes on.'' A damaged nerve that caused weakness in his throwing arm prompted Manning to have surgery on his neck in May. He underwent his third and most invasive operation in September. Doctors fused two vertebrae together, a procedure that forced him to miss the Colts' 2-14 season. Since then, Man- ning hasn't been able to escape the spotlight. There has been ram- pant speculation about his recovery, the potential risks of a return, whether the Colts will pay Man- ning a $28 million roster bonus in early March to prevent him from becom- ing a free agent. Rob Gronkowski, what's your favorite song by Madonna? Not exactly challenging ques- tions about Sunday's Super Bowl between the New York Giants and New England Patriots. But that's media day, the NFL's annual ver- sion of the circus, minus the ring- master. With players and coaches penned into cubicles, mainstream reporters were joined Tuesday by a guy in a superhero costume, anoth- er in an old-time football uniform, kids with microphones and some women who wore dresses that left little to the imagination. They asked the Patriots and Giants any- thing that crossed their minds. And we do mean anything. ''This is crazy, man. It's crazy,'' said Patriots safety Patrick Chung. The senior forward has been a pest for opposing defenses this season. Mason has scored seven goals and assisted on seven more as the Lady Cards are 11-4. Corning Lady Cardinals Soccer None of the refs saw her. It turned out to be a good thing. The Red Bluff defense prevented a last ditch effort by Foothill and held on for a 47-46 win, Tuesday night, to give the Lady Spartans one of their biggest league wins in years. Red Bluff had led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter, but Foothill found a way back behind the offensive rebounding of Court- ney Paget and the outside shooting of Grace Fox. Paget grabbed 12 rebounds in the second half and Fox scored 13 points in the final frame, including a trio of 3-pointers Foothill took over the lead with just under two minutes to play, but Red Bluff responded right back when Cori Schatz converted a field goal as part of an 11-point night. Fox then made a free throw on the other end to tie the game back up at 42-42. It was Lily Brose's turn from there and Red Bluff's sensational junior showed her knee is just fine by stopping on a dime to lose her defender then stepping behind the arc and putting home a 3-pointer. Foothill wasn't going down that easy and despite everyone in the gym knowing the ball was going to Foothill's No. 25, Fox once again Red Bluff's Mariah Smith brings the ball upcourt Tuesday. got behind the 3-point line and tied the game up with less than a minute to play. Brose was then intentionally fouled on the inbound pass — a call the visiting Cougars' faithful did not agree with. Brose made both free throws and the Spartans ran the clock down to around 10 seconds before missing a field goal attempt. Fox was fouled with six seconds on the clock, but split her free throws to leave the Cougars trailing by a point. The miss resulted in a rebound grabbed by both teams and the jumpball possession went to Foothill. That's when Brandt tried to grab a referee's attention to set her defense, but to no avail. But her Lady Spartans jumped the inbound pass and the ball bounced around on the floor without the Cougars even getting the oppor- tunity to hoist a game-winning shot. Red Bluff improved to 11-9 on the season with the win and 4-4 in league play. Brose finished with 14 points for Red Bluff. Alana Hinkston had eight points off the bench to spark a 21-11 Red Bluff second quarter, which gave the Lady Spartans the lead. Ashley Brown, Lottie Jones and Jessica Macdonald each had four points and Mariah Smith added a bucket.
