We sell U-HAUL BOXES Independence Day celebration a huge success By Joanne Winer The annual 4th of July celebra- tions and fi reworks were held last Friday, and in spite of the change of date, the crowds still came and had a great time. The event started at 5 p.m. with everyone gathered around the north side of the pavil- ion where all the food and drinks were set up. The Rotary had hot dogs and nachos, Operation Hero Comfort had sodas and water, and Love's were selling corn on the cob to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network, a charity that they sponsor every year. Richard Oldham donated free watermelon again this year. There were also lots of great activities for the kids (and some adults). The Quartzsite Youth Council helped setting up the games and the dunk tank, and the kids had a blast. They also provid- ed free glow sticks for the children. Proud Neighbors of Quartzsite had a great time with rock painting for kids and adults too! The Parks and Recreation Dept. helped set up games, checked the garbage and set up and fi lled the water slide and pools for the kids. They always do such a great job every time there is a function in the park. A special raffl e was held to make money for the Food Bank and Bobby Ketcherside from Mr. Cool Seal donated an antique sewing machine to be raffl ed off--it raised $195 for the Food Bank, who also had a tip jar set up at the Rotary table that raised more. The funds raised by the Rotary are going for scholarships for local students. Operation Hero Comfort was asked to lower their prices for the drinks for this event, and the Rotary donated money and cases of soda and water to offset what they would have lost in sales at the regu- lar prices. The VFW also donated ice for the coolers for Operation Hero Comfort, and they brought out a large container of bagged cookies that they gave to the group to sell to raise money for the post- age for the packages they send out every two weeks to the troops. Thank you so much VFW and to the Rotary for your donations to help our troops! Of course, the highlight of the event was the big fi reworks dis- play sponsored by the Town of Quartzsite and the Quartzsite Fire Dept. They always do such a great job each year making sure that the people have a safe time and a great show!! They deserve a huge pat on the back for all they do for this event and for our town! We missed the slide show this year, but it was still a great fi reworks display!! A special thanks to all the vol- unteers who came out and helped make this such a great event, and to everyone who came out and enjoyed all the family fun this cel- ebration brings each year!! READER'S OASIS BOOKS 690 E. Main - Quartzsite (one block east of Family Dollar) 928-927-6551 On Saturday July 25, 2015 the future Quartzite Youth Council is hosting Quartzsite's fi rst National Dance Day event. This will be held at the Quartzsite Community Center from 10am to 12pm. "Launched in 2010 by "So You Think You Can Dance" co-creator and Dizzy Feet Foundation co- president Nigel Lythgoe, National Dance Day (NDD) is an annual celebration that takes place on the last Saturday in July. This grass- roots campaign encourages Ameri- cans to embrace dance as a fun and positive way to maintain good health and fi ght obesity. NDD achieved national recogni- tion when Congresswoman El- eanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), a long-time proponent of healthy lifestyles, announced at a press conference on July 31, 2010, in Washington, D.C., that she was introducing a congressional reso- lution declaring the last Saturday in July to be the country's offi cial National Dance Day." Let's Dance! National Dance Day July 25th This free event is open to all ages. Join Quartzsite's future Youth Council at 10:00 to learn the fun and easy choreographed dance routine. Once we've learned the routine, it will be uploaded on to the Dizzy Feet website and may even be featured on "So You Think You Can Dance". Check out the local event on Face- book at https://www.facebook. com/events/1469037630078934/ For more information or to preview the dance visit www.dizzyfeetfoun- dation.org/national-dance-day Q
