Lewerenz Street Herington, KS 67449-9705 Address Service Requested Bringing Tri Deltas Together Anne Schlaegel Otte '70 on Planning the 100th Anniversary Celebration It was a match made in heaven from the start. For Anne Schlaegel Otte '70, there was no place that could compare with Theta Iota. Her best friend from high school, Linda Brownlee Patterson '70, went through recruitment with her. They were both familiar with Theta Iota due to Linda's legacy connection through her mother, Phyllis Greenough Brownlee '49. The "Sound of Music" recruitment skit sealed the deal for them. Anne recalls how the house was always filled with songs for dinner or University Sing practice and good times punctuated by laughter. "Back then, it was all about fun, friendship, and dealing with the struggles of college. It wasn't until later I realized I had made some wonderful, lifelong friends while also learning important lessons, such as good manners," Anne said. In 2008, those connections inspired her to volunteer for Theta Iota. Her pledge mom, Janet Whitehair Cooper '68, House Corporation secretary, convinced Anne to assist in planning a reunion for the 1968-1970 initiation classes. Through this, she discovered how great reunions can be. So, when asked if she would like to be assistant chair for the planning of the 100th anniversary celebration, Anne said "Why not?" With Mary Lynn Manning '82, chair of the committee, living in New York City, Anne stepped in to provide local event coordination. As plans developed, she became determined to research the early years of the chapter as much of it was unknown. Her experience with music and theater helped her organize the program for the dinner. To Anne, the preparation, because it required working with other Theta Iotas and the anniversary, was enjoyable. Anne's involvement with Theta Iota is something she believes is important for every alumna. "It definitely is more fun to give than to receive. Alumnae support is needed to make Tri Delta a great experience for collegiates. I'd like to see today's collegians enjoy the same experience I have had and will do what I can in this regard." Anne is a retired music teacher, now pursuing a variety of volunteer jobs. She and her husband live in Herington, Kansas, and spend much time visiting children and grandchildren.
