N Summer 2015 Theta Iota Toasts Chapter's Past, Looks toward Future Never has the spirit of Theta Iota sisterhood been so evident as during our centennial celebration on April 17-19. After planning for two years, 300 alumnae from across the country attended. U n d e r g r a d u a t e m e m b e r s welcomed all to their home and shared highlights of being a Theta Iota in our 100th year. Together, we toasted our honored past while looking forward to a promising future. Friday evening, pledge classes through 1972 met at the Manhattan Country Club. Kansas barbecue and western attire set the mood. Pledge sisters from as early as the '40s graced the evening, as catching up continued well into the night. Kite's Red Dirt Road Bar was the place to be for classes from 1973-2011. Intermittent showers on Saturday could not dampen the fun. Sisters were dropped off at the Chapter House, where undergraduate tour guides met them. A sign above the vintage photograph of sisters on move-in day in the '40s truly welcomed us back. Many enjoyed perusing class scrapbooks, photos from the archives, and the detailed displays. Featured was our original chapter, Eta Beta Pi, later becoming Theta Iota of Delta Delta Delta, and one of our best-known charter members, Ivy Fuller Olds 1915. Tri Delta International donated clothing and jewelry that were available for purchase. Saturday evening began with a cocktail hour at the Sheraton Hotel. Willie the Wildcat and members of the Pride of Wildcat Land Marching Band surprised everyone. Silent auction and raffle ticket proceeds totaled near $20,000 and will help ensure completion of large maintenance projects at the Chapter House. Kansas State Alumni Association President Amy Button Renz delivered congratulations, and Centennial Chairman Mary Lynn Manning '82 welcomed all. The Centennial Stars and Crescent Banquet was a true pearl in Theta Iota's history. Mary Lynn opened the event with comments regarding her many enriching experiences in Tri Delta. Remarks followed by special guest Phyllis Durbin Grissom, Theta Kappa '90, president of Tri Delta International Fraternity. Theta Iota's Housing Specialist, Melissa Smrekar, Alpha Sigma '09, also attended. Chapter presidents Laila Sammur '12 (2013-14) and Breanna Norton '12 (2014-15) addressed the sisterhood next, and accepted a commemorative anniversary plate and document from Phyllis. Tri Delta Grace was led by Jennifer Inskeep Larson '70, and numerous favorite chapter songs were sung by all before dinner. After, comments were made by House Corporation President Laura Anderson Pestinger '76. House Corporation Treasurer Marilee Horner Whelan '68 explained the Theta Iota Centennial Fund, and Centennial Fundraiser Chairman Angie Shields Lucchi '96 announced the raffle winners. The main evening entertainment was the performance of an original skit written by Anne Schlaegel Otte '70, "Forty Years of Rush, or, Will Dot Find Her Way Home?," a compilation of the most popular recruitment skits. Scenes from A Chorus Line, The Sound of Music, Grease, Peanuts, Carousel, and Oliver! were woven together by a host of talented Deltas. The evening was closed by the sisterhood singing "Pass It On" to candlelight and the "Alpha Theta Phi Benediction." The Pansy Brunch started Sunday, followed by the Circle Degree of Initiation for 28 collegiate seniors, joined by other alumnae who were not able to be in attendance when their pledge classes participated. The final official event of the weekend was the Golden Circle Degree of Initiation for those alumnae present initiated during the years 1948-1965. It was a pleasure to honor them. The first statement in the Purpose of Tri Delta, "to establish a perpetual bond of friendship among its members," was prominent at every event of the celebration. It was a momentous occasion indeed, and the most meaningful of all is that our bonds really do stand the passage of time.
