Ontheair By Jerome Pugmire TheAssociatedPress AMIENS, FRANCE With crashes taking down riders on rain-drenched roads, keeping team leaders safe was the order of the day on Wednesday's fifth stage of the Tour de France. By the time Andre Grei- pel attacked in the last 100 meters to win his second stage of the Tour, and a third in five days for Ger- man riders, the last of the day's seven crashes had taken down 30 riders. There had been a big spill in stage three, too, in- volving some 20 riders. But once again, Chris Froome and the other Tour con- tenders avoided them. "There was absolutely everything out there today. It rained, which made the roads slippery, and it was also windy," said Ian Stan- nard, Froome's Team Sky teammate. "That made for a stressful day." Peter Sagan, a Slovak rider seeking to win the green jersey as the Tour's best sprinter for a fourth straight year, had even more reason to feel tired. He spent most of the day protecting his Tin- koff-Saxo teammate Al- berto Contador, and then contested the stage sprint, zooming ahead of British rider Mark Cavendish to take second place behind Greipel. "It was also very crazy today with rain, wind and a lot of crashes and I'm happy with how we fin- ished," Sagan said. Three of his teammates were in- volved in crashes, but not Contador. "Everybody wants to be at the front on a day like this to protect the team leaders and that creates tension," Sagan said. "I want to help and protect Alberto." The yellow jersey group rolled over the line with no change to the leading po- sitions. German rider Tony Mar- tin, the winner on stage 4, still leads Froome by 12 seconds and Tejay Van Gar- deren, a promising Amer- ican rider with strong climbing skills, by 25. TOUR DE FRANCE Contenders kept safe in rain Team leaders avoid trouble in stage 5 marred by crashes sixth straight year. "Of course, he will be the favorite of the match," Gasquet said. "Everybody knows that." Friday's other semifinal will pit seven-time cham- pion Roger Federer against 2013 winner Andy Murray. Despite losing serve for the first time all tour- nament, Federer over- whelmed Gilles Simon 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals for the 10th time, and to the final four of a Grand Slam tourna- ment for the 37th time. Murray beat Canada's Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 to reach his sixth Wimble- don semifinal. Federer is closing in on a record eighth Wimbledon title and his 18th Grand Slam championship. "The road is long getting here," Federer said. "But still I feel like I'm fresh and I've got energy left in the tank for hopefully a great match with Andy and then we'll see." Federer has never lost in the Wimbledon semifi- nals, holding a career 9-0 record. He has a 12-11 ca- reer edge over Murray, but the Briton beat him on Centre Court in the final of the 2012 Olympic tour- nament — a few weeks af- ter Federer defeated Mur- ray in the Wimbledon final for his seventh title. "We both like to look back at that summer — me, not so much at the Olym- pics; him, probably not so much at Wimbledon," Fe- derer said. "He played un- believable in the finals of the Olympics. I'm not go- ing to try to look back at that too much, because he really dominated me in that one." Murray overpowered Federer in straight sets in the Olympic match, but since then, Federer has won four of their last six meetings, including the last three. Tennis FROM PAGE 1 come back to tournament play when I feel 100 per- cent healthy and 100 per- cent competitive." Ben Hogan in 1954 was the last British Open cham- pion who did not defend. Hogan, who was nearly killed in an automobile accident in 1949, won the only British Open he played in 1953 at Carnoustie. "We are naturally very disappointed that Rory will be unable to defend his title at St. Andrews next week," the R&A said in a statement. "Rory will play in many more Open Cham- pionships and our primary concern is for his complete recovery." He was replaced in the field by Russell Knox, who grew up in Inverness in the north of Scotland and will be making his Open debut. Though it wasn't a big surprise that he withdrew — not after the photo Mon- day of McIlroy on crutches — it was no less jarring that golf's best player would not be at the home of golf to de- fend his title. His absence makes Jor- dan Spieth the favorite at St. Andrews in his quest for the Grand Slam. Spieth is only the fourth player since 1960 to have won the Mas- ters and the U.S. Open in the same year. "It's hugely disappoint- ing, especially with him and Jordan and everything that's going on," Graeme McDowell said from the Scottish Open. "It was looking to be a really exciting Open for all involved. I'm sure he's really disappointed. ... No one would love to stop Jor- dan in his tracks next week more than Rory. With the fun rivalry going on and everything, he's going to be gutted. I saw the golf course last Saturday. I believed that Rory was rightly a favorite. I thought he'd get it done around there." McIlroy FROM PAGE 1 to hit major league pitch- ing, and he's had some big hits for us already." A day after Cain pitched six scoreless innings to earn a win, Peavy threw seven strong. He allowed six hits and two runs (one earned) and struck out five. Through two starts each by Cain and Peavy, the Gi- ants have reason to feel good about their starting pitching, which will ex- perience a post-All-Star break logjam when Tim Hudson and Tim Lince- cum return. "Me and him are going to push other," Peavy said of himself and Cain. "We know what we've got to be for this team. We're going to have some depth." Rediscovering depth in the lineup is the bigger problem right now. Posey's hamstring injury isn't be- lieved to serious, and he expects to start Friday. There's been no discussion of having him skip the All- Star game, to which he was elected a starter. "It's at the point where the training staff feels like I need a little rest to try to get it to go away," Posey said. "A few years ago, I felt something similar to it. At this point, I don't see it be- ing an issue." Brandon Crawford, Brandon Belt and Angel Pagan are among the scuf- fling hitters, but Bochy ex- pects the offense — which is still without Nori Aoki until at least a week or so after the All-Star break — to turn it around. "I think this is too good an offense not to put runs on the board consistently," Bochy said. "With Pence in the lineup now, we have a lot of depth in this lineup. Once we get full strength, I think this a team you'll see that earlier did swing the bat well. We were put- ting up some big numbers, and I think we'll get back to that point." Giants FROM PAGE 1 coming up July 31 and Ka- zmir's contract with Oak- land up at the end of the year, the industry-wide as- sumption is that he's avail- able for the right deal. Back on May 27 in a start against the Tigers in Oak- land, Kazmir had to leave after three innings with what was then described as left shoulder tightness. He returned to the rotation nine days later. He couldn't make it through the fifth inning in his June 5 return game, but since then he'd started five times and was 3-1 with a 1.53 ERA. As Wednesday was Ka- zmir's final start before the four-day All-Star break, the A's could use the time off plus an off day just four days after play resumes for the second half to give Ka- zmir as much as two weeks' time off between starts. Seeing Kazmir leave the game early was a problem for the A's, not just because his 2.56 ERA is sixth in the American League. The A's bullpen has been problem- atic, and lately Scribner has been at the heart of it. Teix- eira was the first man he faced, and he gave him two homers, one to start the fourth to tie the game and another to open the sixth to expand the lead to 4-2. The game seemed to be in hand for New York when ex-A's shortstop Stephen Drew homered offFernando Abad in the eighth, but the Oakland had one more push in the ninth when Marcus Semien crushed a two-run homer off Yankees' closer Andrew Miller, cutting the deficit to one run. A throwing error by Yan- kees' third baseman Grego- rio Petit got the tying run to second base before the comeback ended.
