4B Daily News – Saturday, January 28, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Church news Sunday Sing The First Southern Baptist Church will be hosting the 5th Sunday Sing at 6 p.m. Sunday. Friend in faith will be singing, as will David Pace and Bob and Mary Salisbury. Special Music will be Michael Ziesing, "The Fiddle Matt." Everyone welcome. This young man is 13 years old and he is amazing. There will be finger food and fellowship afterwards. For more informa- tion, call 530-527-5083. Voices of Faith: What is the best way for people to live their faith? HEART, SOUL, MIGHT Rabbi Mark Levin of Congregation Beth Torah, Over- land Park, Kan.: Faith is the love and service of God. Deuteronomy 6:5 commands us to love God with all our "heart, soul and might." Each person balances them differ- ently, and no two people are the same. Each soul is given its particular task in the world. Heart: Beware lest you serve other gods of your own making, whether it be your own ego or your pleasure. Serve God's will according to divine commandments. Soul: Out of love rather than fear, willingly serve the higher purpose to which God calls you, even at the cost of your life. Might: Donate your means to establish God's kingdom. God calls us to love God and to pursue justice. God never calls us to destroy, but only to build up; never to take life, but to save it. A Talmudic story recounts that Rabbi Meir was accost- ed by robbers, and he wanted to pray for their destruction. His wife, the saintly Bruriah, corrected her brilliant and renowned husband: "Pray for the death of the sin, not the death of the sinners." The robbers corrected their ways. Only God punishes sinners, not us. We are called to serve God with love and righteousness as Micah teaches, "What is it that the Lord requires of you? Only to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God." EVERYONE IS VALUABLE The Rev. Betty Hanna-Witherspoon, pastor of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church, Kansas City, Mo.: I find that as we devote ourselves to reflection upon our faith, the requirements for living our faith become more clear. Christian believers may enter their study with different personalities and spiritual gifts and as a result come up with different emphases, but here are mine. They are simple and quite basic. When Jesus was asked the question "What is the most important requirement for living right?" he responded, "Love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and love your neighbor as yourself." Neighbors are not just my friends, family and those who live nearby, but those for whom I have a deep distrust and enmity. Jesus called upon his followers to go beyond emo- tions and reach into a compassionate core that honored oth- ers as valuable human beings. That commandment answers most of my questions about how I am to live my faith. In each of life's encounters I must ask myself, "Am I honoring this person as a valuable human being?" When I respond positively to this question, it handles almost all questions I have about my behavior. If you desire specifics, it eliminates gossip around the water cooler, racist and sexist jokes, jokes about people's physical characteristics, bullying and a range of other behaviors. What if we Christians treated everybody like they were valuable human beings? How would our daily living be dif- ferent? Needed: The courage of conviction As we prepare to begin a new year it is predictable. Every time new research demonstrates increas- ing support for pro life convictions in the US – such as a recent Gallup Poll – some politician claiming to be a peacemaker goes public with a plea for all of us to play nicely together and go silent on those pesky and divisive social issues such as abortion. Just shy of 60% of Americans now want elective abor- tion eliminated altogether or restricted to cases of rape or incest. (If law were changed to reflect that the numbers of abortions would be small fractions of current totals.) More than 70% want abortions of convenience prohibited, and nearly 80% oppose public funding of abor- tion – like the three hundred sixty million dollars that subsidize Planned Parenthood clinics without directly paying the doctors. Now that such clear majorities of all Americans take conservative posi- tions on abortion – and other social issues in many cases as well – Cal- ifornia Republican donor and activist Charles Munger is waging war to force the state Republican Party platform to delete clauses addressing them. He says the GOP can only win elections with a more nuanced position – read silence – on them. The trouble is that when majori- ties of Americans saw themselves as pro-choice the cry was for the pro-life minority to sit back and honor the majority. Now that the majority is pro-life these same folks want the majority to stifle in the interest of unity around the eco- nomic and infrastructure issues they see as more politically winnable in that silence. They want most of us to look at the big picture, take the long view, and bring in a govern- ment that ignores the issues that split us apart as a people. But life is a Kingdom issue, not a mere political football. And former California Republican Assembly President Mike Spence says the passion is in the social issues, such as abor- tion. "No one's ever walked a precinct because of above-ground water stor- age issues. Core issues are what motivates our base and our volunteers," according to Spence. He thinks Munger naïve at best. These issues motivate people of faith too. We can respect the will of the majority or try to change it by prayer and debate. But we do not tell the majority to silently make way for the minority. There is a fundamental issue of perspective even more basic when applied to candidates by voters. Should we Christians be one-issue voters who only care about whether an elected official would vote to fund Planned Parenthood when he becomes an elected official? Of course not; there are many issues before our legislative bodies both state and national. A single litmus test is short sighted at best. But pro-abortion people tend to believe we need to be told what to do and manipulated into doing it, not being smart enough or courageous enough to get there without their assistance. Pro-life people tend to have a perspective that – in general – respects not only the fact of life but the features of freedom, humil- ity before God and mankind, and the individual responsibility that square with a Lord Who came that we might have life. There is noth- James Wilson GodTalk ing magical or automatic about it – that is why we should not be single issue people – but more often than not people who favor death to any undesirables see life as a limited opportunity poker game in which some must win while others must lose. There is not enough on the table to let everyone have some of the pot. They think they are just playing the hand they are dealt. People who believe everyone has at least the basic right to life, liberty and the pur- suit of happiness tend to see life as an unlimited opportunity game in which we can always ask the dealer for a new deck – and He loves us enough to deliver to all if we just get out of His way by being more willing to give than to take. In any case, as the tide of public opinion turns more and more toward a culture of life than a cul- ture of death, we need the courage of our convictions and the confi- dence to laugh at those who would compromise us at the end of a good day's work. Paul says over and over in his epistles to do all things neces- sary and then stand firm. Jesus says the Kingdom is not for those who put hand to plow and then look back. This is especially true for us now. We are, after all, about to begin a new year. James A. House passes bill to allow religious symbols on war memorials WASHINGTON (MCT) — The House on Tuesday approved a measure that seeks to permit religious sym- bols on federal war memorials, a response to a court ruling that declared a cross atop a San Diego memorial violated the Constitution. The War Memorial Protection Act passed on a voice vote in the Republican-controlled House but faces uncertainty in the Senate. The measure, which would allow religious symbols to be included in military monuments, was introduced by Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals declared the 43-foot cross atop Mount Soledad an unconstitutional "government endorsement of religion." The measure's approval came the same day the House passed a bill, the World War II Memorial Prayer Act, to authorize installation of a plaque or inscription at the World War II Memorial in Washington of the prayer that President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered on the morning of D-day. Hunter said his legislation was needed in the face of legal challenges against the Mount Soledad Veterans Memorial "and the likelihood of more to come." "Our Constitution protects the freedom of religion, not freedom from it," Rep. Brian P. Bilbray, R-Calif., a bill co-sponsor, told his colleagues. "This issue is one that has gone so far that we're actually talking about tearing crosses down over war memorials." But Dena Sher, legislative counsel in the ACLU's Washington legislative office, called the bill "a mis- guided attempt to sanction government promotion of religion."
