Known as the largest and most prestigious gelding sale west of the Rocky Mountains, the sale is cele- brating its 50th year. "We are proud that this event has endured the test of time and in this, our 50th year, are still striving to offer geldings who in their own way, set the standard for value and worth," Sale Manager Adam Owens wrote in a foreword for the sale's catalog. Reaching such a mile- stone would not be possible if not for the high quality and consistency of geldings cosigners bring to the sale, he said. On Thursday afternoon geldings were checked for conformation and other fea- tures to make sure only the best will sold. They performed dry work and maneuvered through a trail obstacle course. While the performances ensured each gelding's physical and mental sound- ness before it is sold, a com- mittee of judges also was looking for the best horse out there. That horse will be named the Craig Owens Ideal Ranch Horse. Though the ideal ranch horse has traditionally been a part of the sale, it was renamed in honor of Craig Owens about four years ago after his passing. Like many of the Owenses, Craig Owens played a major role in the gelding sale, Secretary Trish Suther said. "It's the one horse that when the judges are sitting out there watching it, they're thinking 'that's the horse I want to get on, that's the ideal ranch horse,'" Suther said. Another top honor geldings can compete for is the Stock Horse Cham- pion.
