The Giants said Thurs- day it is a non-guaranteed big league deal for Hens- ley, who still must pass a physical before the club makes a formal announce- ment. OAKLAND (AP) — Jonny Gomes takes pride in his versatility. He can play the corner outfield, and he's an experienced designated hitter. That certainly will be helpful for Oakland manager Bob Melvin with a young roster. The A's and Gomes finalized a $1 million, one-year contract Thursday after reaching a preliminary agreement last week. He will bring a veteran pres- ence as well as key depth. Gomes already has a nice fan base in the Bay Area. He grew up in nearby Petaluma, where he is loved. ''Everybody's really excited. ''I'm getting tons of positive feed- back.'' The 31-year-old hit .209 with 14 home runs and 43 RBIs last year for Cincinnati and Washington in his ninth major league season. He will provide outfield depth for the rebuilding A's, who haven't had a winning record or made the playoffs since being swept in the 2006 AL championship series by Detroit. ''I'm not rebuilding — that's how I keep explaining it,'' Gomes said. ''My role is how it is every single year, when my number's called I want to be ready.'' Oakland's starting outfield is slated as newly acquired Seth Smith in left, re-signed Coco Crisp in center and new acquisition Josh Reddick in right. Collin Cowgill, acquired from Arizona in December, also is in the mix off the HONOLULU (AP) — From the panorama of the Pacific outside his hotel window to watching NFC teammates Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees throw the ball, Cam Newton can't help but stare and be inspired by all the perfect views in par- adise. "This is unbelievable, man. This is so gratifying and just to have the opportu- nity to be here is a blessing," the Carolina Panthers quar- terback said in an interview with The Associated Press. Newton and fellow rook- ie quarterback Andy Dalton of the Cincinnati Bengals were chosen to replace Super Bowl quarterbacks Eli Manning and Tom Brady for Sunday's Pro Bowl. Their selection makes this Pro Bowl the first time in history that the all-star game will feature two rook- ie quarterbacks. The only two rookie sig- nal callers to make the Pro Bowl since 1970 are Vince Young and Dan Marino. Newton, the No. 1 over- all selection in the 2011 draft, said he's just soaking up the experience and enjoy- ing being with his new teammates. "I'm a fan of all these guys — Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Clay Matthews, Larry Fitzgerald — the list goes on with all the All-Pro guys that are here and I get to share the field with," he said. Newton is backing up Brees and Rodgers, and doesn't mind starting on the bench. "I idolized them through- out the year, watched so much film on them how they play the game from the check downs, to the way they throw, to everything," Newton said. "Lo and behold, we're on the same roster. "So I'm watching and learning. What better way to learn than firsthand? I don't really don't mind, especially to these two MVP candi- dates. I'll be second string to that, man," he said. Newton's season wasn't too shabby, either. He's the first quarterback ever to throw for 4,000 yards and rush for 500 yards. He completed 310 of 517 passes for 4,051 yards, the most by a rookie quarter- back in NFL history. He also threw for 21 touchdowns Gomes is prepared to play right, left or designated hitter — while also pro- viding a clubhouse presence. ''I'm well traveled and have been under some great managers,'' he said. Pulling on the green and gold at FanFest this weekend will mean a lot to Gomes, who loved the Bay Area sports teams growing up but especially the A's after they won the earthquake-inter- rupted 1989 World Series against the San Francisco Giants. ''I was wearing a whole lot of A's gear growing up — don't know how you couldn't with the Bash Brothers and Rickey Henderson,'' he said. ''Winning the '89 World Series helped with jumping on that bandwagon.'' The A's cleared room on the 40- man roster for Gomes on Thursday by designating infielder Adrian Cardenas for assignment. with 17 interceptions. His 14 rushing touchdowns are the most ever by an NFL quarterback in a season. The Panthers missed the playoffs after finishing 6-10, but Newton promises he has a lot more to offer as his game matures. "I've had an unbelievable and blessed year, but at the same time, I feel the best is yet to come for Cam New- ton," he said. "I'm going to continue to work hard and push myself." Looking back at game film of himself, Newton said there were things he was happy with and some things that were "disgusting to look at." "That's why you grow into the game and watch film on yourself to see your- self now and see yourself in the future," he said. And to Newton, the future is bright in Carolina, which is looking to become a playoff contender. "The Carolina Panthers, coach (Ron) Rivera, (Gener- al Manager) Marty Hurney and (owner) Jerry Richard- son, they have everybody's interest at heart and they're going to do what's the best for this team," Newton said. "That's something I do know and I can attest to. This team, this organization is going in the right direction to be an elite playoff team and contender year in and year out." As for Dalton, he's already tasted the playoffs, even though it ended in a lopsided 31-10 loss to Hous- ton in the AFC wild-card round. Dalton threw for 3,398 yards and 20 touchdowns, leading the young Bengals (9-8) to just their third win- ning record and playoff appearance in the last 21 years. Dalton still can't believe how far he's come. "A year ago I was in Mobile, Ala., in the Senior Bowl trying to impress scouts. A year later, I'm sit- ting here in Hawaii at the Pro Bowl," he said. "A lot has happened and I just feel blessed to be where I am." Dalton, a second-round selection in 2011, said mak- ing the Pro Bowl never entered his mind. "Trying to get to the play- offs is all I was worried about. With that, I was able to get here," he said. "I feel blessed. The Lord has given me so much and it's been a big year and this is a great 6 p.m. 7:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. ALAMEDA (AP) — The Oakland Raiders for- mally agreed Thursday on a four-year deal to make Den- ver defensive coordinator Dennis Allen their new head coach. New general manager Reggie McKenzie had decided Tuesday to hire Allen to replace the fired Hue Jackson as head coach. The two sides finalized the details Thursday, a person familiar with the process said on condition of anonymity because the team is not publicly discussing the search. 7:30 p.m. CSNCalifornia.com first reported the length of the deal. Allen is Oakland's sev- enth head coach since 2003. The Raiders have gone nine straight seasons without a winning record or a playoff berth, just missing out on the AFC West title on tiebreak- ers with an 8-8 record last season. 6 p.m. The 39-year-old Allen will be the first new Raiders coach to come from the defensive side of the ball since late owner Al Davis hired linebackers coach John Madden in 1969. In his first season as coor- dinator in Denver, Allen helped the Broncos improve from allowing a league- worst 29.4 points and 390.8 yards per game to ranking 20th in yards (357.8) and 24th in points (24.4) this sea- son on the way to an AFC West title. Before serving as Den- ver's defensive coordinator last season, Allen spent five years as a defensive assistant in New Orleans and also coached for Atlanta. The Raiders are coming off one of their worst defen- sive seasons ever. Oakland had franchise worsts in touchdown passes allowed (31), yards per carry (5.1), yards passing (4,262) and total yards (6,201), while giving up the third-most points (433) in team history. The Raiders joined this year's Tampa Bay team as one of the four teams to allow at least 30 TD passes and 5.0 yards per carry in a season, a distinction last reached by the 1952 Dallas Rookies Newton, Dalton ready to shine in Hawaii way to kind of end it." Newton and Dalton greeted each other at the hotel before Wednesday's opening practice. "We were able to come in and the teams trusted us to come in and lead the team," Dalton said. "So I think it's great. We just came out and did what we were able to do — just be ourselves and it worked out for both of us. We both came into great sit- uations." Dalton is joined by three Bengals: second-year defen- sive tackle Geno Atkins, rookie receiver A.J. Green and second-year tight end Jermaine Gresham. "For us to be here with four guys in their first, sec- ond year, it shows the kind of young talent we have," Dalton said. "I think all four of us here, just to be around these guys that have been to the Pro Bowl a lot, it's great for us and gives us a little exposure and we can build upon this." Newton and Dalton said they haven't experienced much hazing yet. But some- times rookies have big food and beverage tabs that left to their rooms. So Newton will be trying to keep his room number quiet. 42 28 Sports Gomes comes home 1B Friday January 27, 2012 Raiders finalize Allen deal
