StaffReports REDDING Red Bluff resident and longtime area softball coach Wayne Stower has been named Coach of the Year by the National Christian Athletic As- sociation and the California Pa- cific Conference. Stower led the Simpson Uni- versity women's softball team to its first national championship in program history by winning the 2015 NCCAA Softball World Series in May. "Coach Stower has built a pro- gram that has national implica- tions," Cal Pac Commissioner Don Ott said. "His coaching peers recognize that not only are his players excellent, but they are led with excellence." Stower also led the Red Hawks to a 13-3 conference sea- son and their fourth straight Cal Pac title. He has won Cal Pac Coach of the Year four times — 2015, 2014, 2012 and 2010. The award is based on a voting pro- cess that includes coaches from the other Cal Pac schools — Em- bry-Riddle-Arizona, Menlo Col- lege and La Sierra University. "I am so happy for my coach receiving this title two years in a row," said sophomore pitcher Paris Hallums. "Any time a coach or a player receives an award like this, it is really ex- citing for a team." Stower was selected for NC- CAA Coach of the Year by the All-American Committee, which is made up of the regional soft- ball sports chairs and the na- tional chair. "Wayne was very deserving having always been close to win- ning it all by fielding a very good team in our championship most of the past four to five years, but finally broke through this year to win the NCCAA national championship," said NCCAA Di- rector of Membership and Com- pliance Jerry Malone. Stower has been coaching the Red Hawks since the softball program started in 2008. Un- der his leadership, Simpson has participated in a national tour- nament five times over the last six years. They have competed in the NCCAA World Series four times — 2015, 2013, 2011 and 2010 — and the National Asso- ciation of Intercollegiate Athlet- ics national tournament twice — 2011 and 2014. The Red Hawks have also won the Cal Pac five out of the past six seasons. Before coming to Simpson, Stower coached at Foothill High School in Palo Cedro for seven years. He also coached Ameri- can Softball Association girls' softball from 1995-2007. Stower and his wife live in Red Bluff and have two adult children. By Andrew Baggarly Bay Area News Group MIAMI The San Francisco Gi- ants did not expect to unwrap Matt Cain, drop him on a major league mound for the first time in 51 weeks and watch him flirt with perfection. They anticipated a certain number of scattered pitches in his season debut, and the result in a 5-4 loss to the Miami Mar- lins on Thursday — 11 baserun- ners in five innings, four walks, and one cookie fastball to Justin Bour that ended up in the right- field seats — more or less con- firmed that Cain is not ready to reassume his mantle as a stal- wart No. 2 in the rotation behind Madison Bumgarner. But for so long, Cain was the epoxy in their rotation. And so it counted for something: in his debut, he did not become com- pletely unglued. "He had a good delivery, stayed within it," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy, after Cain threw 89 pitches. Peterson The Associated Press VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA One of the benefits of an ex- panded field of 24 teams at the Women's World Cup this year was that there were lots of fresh faces playing in Canada, teams like Ivory Coast, Ecuador and Cam- eroon. While that was good for the women's game globally, the ex- pansion showed the stark con- trast between the haves and have-nots. Case in point was Ivory Coast, which arrived in Canada and 72 hours later opened the tournament with a 10-0 loss to top-ranked Germany. Ivory Coast went on to lose to Thailand and Norway before ex- iting the tournament. Afterward, coach Clementine Toure made an impassioned plea. "I want to make an appeal to not only our federation, but to all of Africa, that women's foot- ball has arrived. We believe in our women. We have a good team," she said through a translator following the team's final group match. "The Ivory Coast showed it deserves a place in the World Cup. But we also deserved to be better prepared. We didn't deserve to be humiliated." By Stephen Wilson The Associated Press LONDON Two-time champion Rafael Nadal is making another early exit from Wimbledon, af- ter losing in the second round to a 102nd-ranked qualifier who played the match of his life. Dustin Brown, a German of Jamaican heritage with a clever touch, go-for-broke attitude and throwback serve-and-volley game, beat Nadal 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Centre Court on Thursday in by far the biggest surprise of the tournament so far. Brown, a 30-year-old journey- man who had never beaten a seeded player at a Grand Slam, kept Nadal off balance all match with a mix of drop-volleys, big serves, reflex shots and quick-fire backhand serve returns. It's the first time Nadal has lost to a qualifier at a Grand Slam, and the fourth year in a row he has lost in the early rounds at Wim- bledon to a player ranked 100th or lower. Nadal won Wimbledon in 2008 and 2010 but has barely been a factor since losing in the 2011 fi- nal.
