ByJulieZeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF The Enjoy Movie in the Park event kicked off its third summer movie series on Satur- day at Red Bluff River Park with a lawn area filled from one side to the other with people to see "The Sandlot." The Red Bluff location is a newer one to the Enjoy group, comprised of Enjoy Magazine and the Redding and Red Bluff branches of the Enjoy Store, which has been doing movies in the park in Redding for seven years, said New Business Develop- ment Manager James Mazzotta. "Our philosophy for this is we are storytellers in the maga- zine, but we also believe that ac- tions speak louder than words," Mazzotta said. "We needed to do something in the commu- nity. The library, which is in the pro- cess of being relocated due to a jail expansion, is working to de- velop a $6.5 million state of the art facility to replace the Red Bluff branch. With $4 million set aside by the county toward the ex- pansion there is still $2.5 million needed for what is being planned. "The library staff is excited to be involved with creating a mod- ern community resource from the conception," Ainsworth said. MCCONNELL FOUNDATION Library receives $500,000 grant By Chip Thompson editor@redbluffdailynews.com @editorchip on Twitter RED BLUFF About 100 friends and family members gathered Fri- day evening at Wilcox Oaks Golf Club to pay tribute to one of Red Bluff's favorite sons — Doug Sale. The combination roast and trib- ute was first suggested about six years ago and finallycame together Friday,withBillCorneliusperform- ing as master of ceremonies. Cornelius recounted the ath- letic and professional highlights of Sale's nearly 93 years, includ- ing coaching basketball at Univer- sity of California Los Angeles un- der the legendary John Wooden. Sale also played basketball and ebaseball at UCLA in the late '40s and was captain of the junior col- lege national championship bas- ketball team from Sacramento City College. A standout athlete at Red Bluff High School, Sale played football, baseball and basketball all four years, except he missed football season during his sophomore year due to a broken arm, Corne- lius said. "It was George Growney who broke my arm," Sale interjected, to much laughter. Following service in the Air Force during World War II, Sale returned to Red Bluff High School to coach, but just a month later seized the opportunity to con- tinue his education and athlet- ics at Sacramento City College. He would later transfer to UCLA, where he played one year of bas- ketball and two years of baseball before graduating in 1948. CHIP THOMPSON - DAILY NEWS By Julie Zeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF Engineer Scott Spangler traveled Friday to Ontario, where he received an American Legion Award for Cal- ifornia Firefighter/Paramedic of the Year in the category of com- munity service at the organiza- tion's state convention at the On- tario Convention Center. Spangler, the first North State representative in 40 years, was one of four people selected state- wide out of a field of 160 to re- ceive the honor. "The award was a complete surprise," Spangler said in a copy of his speech obtained by the Daily News. "I had no idea I had even been nominated. I would like to thank the mem- bers of American Legion Post 167 for their support in my nomi- nation and their excitement over the award. I can't tell you how humbled and honored I am to be recognized for my work from the American Legion, an organi- zation whose members are truly heroes and have made tremen- dous sacrifices to preserve the freedoms of our great country. I am truly blessed to have, what I consider to be, the best job in the world, and it is a privilege to have to opportunity to serve the citizens of Red Bluff both on the job and through my community service activities." Of all his activities, Spangler says he is most proud of the Red Bluff High School football breakfast he started while his son, Garrett, was on the team. He has continued the breakfasts to this day. He also singled out the Santa Project the Red Bluff Volunteer Fire Department puts on annually. "The football breakfasts give us an opportunity to serve the future of our community," Span- gler said. "These boys bust their tails day in and day out taking criticism and losses mixed with their successes and pick them- selves up and start over again each week. They teach me each week what dedication and per- severance looks like on real peo- ple. The coaching staff is a very dedicated group of men who work tirelessly to build a pro- gram that teaches strong values AWARD FIRE ENGINEER HONORED BY AMERICAN LEGION PHOTO COURTESY OF MARYN SPANGLER Red Bluff Fire Engineer Scott Spangler, right, poses for a picture with American Legion Mt.
