as possible, with points being deducted for every second early or late a car arrives, organizers said. Other challenges have in- cluded speed contests on race tracks and private land along the course. Anty Verloop, of the Netherlands, spent some of the Mineral rest stop trying to remove powdery dust from his V-8 powered MGB-GT. A timed section just east of Mineral was on gravel and dirt roads and Verloop said the dust was very bad, as cars start at one-minute intervals and some were catching each other. Richard Worts, of Eng- land, is no newcomer to en- durance rally, having com- peted around the world in his Jaguar Mk2 3.8 litre. Worts and his co-driver Nicola Shackleton won the first Trans American Challenge in 2012, which took drivers from New- ark, New Jersey to Fair- banks, Alaska. Peter and Zoe Lovett in a Porsche 911T were the over- all winners by less than a minute over Paul and San- dra Merryweather in their Mercedes 450 SL. Worts and Shackleton were 22nd overall, just ahead of Ver- loop. The cars were sched- uled to stop in Eureka for the night before continu- ing to San Francisco Sun- day, roughly 6,000 miles travelled since the Halifax start. Saturday's leg was the last competitive day of the rally. Of 39 teams that started the rally, one retired and five were completing the rally as spectators in rental vehicles due to mechanical issues. "I started my profes- sional career assigned to him as an engineer for two years," said newly promoted Redding Fire Chief Gerry Gray, who served for a time as Red Bluff Fire Chief. "At first it was misery. I couldn't do anything right. It became a won- derful experience along the way. All that hard-nos- ing made me a better fire- fighter than I would have been without Larry. He was fantastic to work for, a dedicated public servant and he will be missed. I, for one, will carry his im- pact in my life and my ca- reer." Another man got up and talked about meeting Snell as the fresh, young ROP student who ended up working on the same shift as him quite often after Snell was hired on. Snell loved to joke around and the two had many inside jokes and it only took a key word to set the two of them cracking up, the man said. Snell had recently joined the Tehama County Photo Club and, according to Dave Freeman, Snell was also an avid histo- rian. Freeman has spent years researching Wil- liam B. Ide, the namesake of William B. Ide Adobe State Park. "Larry Snell was a member of my historical team," Freeman said in an email to the Daily News at the time of Snell's death. "Today we lost a stead- fast local historian. His North State knowledge was instrumental in the location of many pre Gold Rush features. He has been instrumental in the identification of Sut- ter Grist Mill near Howe Avenue in Sacramento, the William B. Ide saw- mill south of Red Bluff and his effects on the Rancho Bosquejo project of Peter Lassen have been priceless. These are just a small portion of his his- torical accomplishments to the North State." MARCOANTONIORAMOS Marco Antonio Ramos passed away suddenly on June 23, 2015 in Sacramento, CA, he was 52. Marco came from Mexico to the United States to pursue his dream of becoming a restaurateur. He worked for and was guided by his cousins, Jaime, Pepe, Hector and Polo Ramos, working his way up from dishwasher to manager in their Azteca restaurants. After hard work and determi- nation, he opened his first Casa Ramos restaurant in 1997 in Yreka, CA, expanding his operation to 12 additional lo- cations where he became a popular and beloved "Patron" to his many employees. One of the high points in his life was when he became a US Citizen in 2013, something he cherished and valued. Marco possessed a heart of gold, was a friend to all and never turned his back on a person in need. Known for his nurturing nature, if invited to his home for one of his spectacular meals, you were doted on, treated like royal- ty, and encouraged to stay forever. His playful and gener- ous disposition made traveling with him fun and exciting, making it his mission to see that you were having the time of your life. Marco possessed a charm that would win you over and pull you in which made you feel as though you were the only person that mattered. He was proud of many things, but mostly proud of his three chil- dren, Kevin, Alexis and Kaelee. In the end, when you re- move all the trappings of life, he was just a boy from Mexico who wanted to sell a few tacos, love his family and friends and realize the American Dream. He is survived by his three children, his parents, Justino and Heleodora Ramos; his siblings, Blanca, Maria, Beatriz, Bertha, Leticia, Claudia and Ricardo; his four cousins, and his long-time partner, Michelle Hill. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, July 5, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Marriott Rancho Cordova, CA 95742, open to family, friends, employees and loyal cus- tomers. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity. Girdner Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Online condolences can be made at www.gird nerfuneralchapel.com. MURRAY E.
