The holiday month of December is an oppor- tune time to consider shopping in local member galleries and visiting member galler- ies who are celebrating something special this month. The Cape Fear Studios on Maxwell Street is hosting its Annual Holiday Member Show until Jan. 18, 2010. Located at 148 Maxwell Street in downtown Fayetteville, members of the studio are exhibiting jewelry, pottery, stained glass, photography and paintings — many items priced under $100. All of the items have been handcrafted by artists who are members of Cape Fear Studios. If you're a local artist shopping for an original work at the studio, then you may want to consider be- coming part of the organization. The Cape Fear Studios is a juried artist cooperative with 40 member artists. Interested artist will need to submit fi ve pieces in the medium they want to exhibit; three art professionals will evaluate the quality of the work in order to accept them as members. While shopping at Cape Fear Studios, anyone interested in learning a new art form or craft can ask about their classes and workshops. Individual lessons are also available in painting and ceramics. For complete class listings please visit their Web site at www.capefearstudios.com. The Fayetteville Art Guild, located at 113 Gillespie Street, has opened an exhibit space called Gallery One13. A new gallery, the Guild member's Holiday Art Sale has affordable fi ne art and craft works. During the Holiday Art Sale, visitors will fi nd all work priced from $1 to $100. The Fayetteville Art Guild is a non-juried art organization in the community that has an open membership. Although competitions and invitationals take place in the gallery during the year, there are plenty of opportunities for all members to regularly participate in exhibitions in a professional gallery setting. Fayetteville Technical Community College is hosting its last reception before the New Year to celebrate the art of children. On Dec. 16, the FTCC art gallery will host an opening of The Children's Exhibit — works of art created by children in the FTCC Children's Centre. The reception will be held from 12-1:30 p.m. in the gallery located at 366A in Cumberland Hall. For information call Seán McDaniel at 910-678-0042. McDaniel has plans to make this an annual event. "We are all intrigued with art created by children. This gives the children a chance to experience seeing their works in a real gallery." Before the Arts Council of Fayetteville and Cumberland County closes for the December holiday, there are a few days left to see The College Invitation- al. Four institutions of higher education were invited to select 10 works from their respective students to highlight their program. The visual art programs at Fayetteville Technical Community College, Fayetteville State University, Methodist University and the Uni- versity of North Carolina at Pembroke participated in the exhibition. Each institution selected a body of student work to share with the community (see article on page 8). The College Invitational may become a biannual exhibit for the region to view what students are doing at area colleges and universities. During the holiday season, it's a wonderful opportunity for parents, teachers and students to visit. The exhibit will remain up until Dec. 19, 2009. For more information call the Arts Council at 323-1776. The Visual Art Alliance will regularly promote the up and coming exhibits of its member organizations next year. Not only has the organization established its exhibit calendar for 2010, the Alliance has planned some surprise events! In the near future, look for post-card size maps of the geographic locations of all member organizations and regularly published articles showcasing galleries and events sponsored by the Visual Art Alliance.
