4A Daily News – Saturday, January 21, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith What's an acceptable reason for leaving a church? McClatchy Newspapers STAY WITH CHRIST The Rev. Justin Hoye, pastor at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Kansas City, Mo.: When one leaves a wor- shipping community, I fear it has more to do with evading an issue and less to do with following Jesus. In the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John, when Jesus delivers a long and intense pronouncement on the reception of his body and blood, many of Jesus' disciples leave. His words carry scandal; too hard to accept. However, the Twelve remain with Jesus, and Simon Peter speaks to their mindset: "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." (John 6:68) A Catholic would iterate these words as a way of understanding why one remains, when there may be other forces pressing for a departure from a faith com- munity: the arrival of new pastoral leadership, chal- lenging words from the pulpit, the loss of favorite parishioners or familiar customs. The issue truly does boil down to the situation of John 6: In departing, am I leaving Jesus Christ? This should be a sobering moment of reflection, hopefully overriding departures that are weighted with serious- ness but which might not meet the requirements of discipleship. To be a disciple of Jesus Christ is to follow Jesus Christ. The only acceptable move is to follow him. In leaving a church would I actually be following our Lord, or moving away from the one who has the words of eternal life? DON'T WASTE TIME The Rev. Duke Tufty, pastor of Unity Temple on the Plaza, Kansas City, Mo.: If you choose to leave a church you have been attending, there is a reason you do so. If that reason is acceptable to you, it is a valid reason. Say you go to a restaurant for a wonderful evening of fine dining. Afterward you reflect on the experience and come to the determination that the food didn't taste good. It gave you an ill feeling, and the service was very bad. You excuse the restaurant and give it a second chance, but the results are the same. Now then, would you consider going back and spending good money on a bad time? Probably not. Attending a particular church is a similar situation. If you aren't uplifted or inspired and don't feel good about the experience after it's over, why go back? If you leave feeling guilty, shameful, put upon or at odds with the theology, why go back? Your time is like money. You can spend it any way you choose. But you only have so much of it, so indeed it behooves you to spend it wisely in a way that makes you feel good and leaves you with something of value. An acceptable reason for leaving a church is if the answer to the following question is "no": "Was this a good and beneficial way to spend my time?" Ministry to cancer patients No one wants to hear a diagnosis of cancer. Just the word itself brings all kinds of thoughts, emotions, and a feeling of one's life being out of control. When I was diagnosed with uterine cancer in January of 2009, the peace of God immediately engulfed me. It was a "great sur- prise package" from God. I think, in His mercy, God met my need for strength, especially having heard such unwelcome news. I'd not be honest though if I neglected to confess that some tur- moil also engulfed my mind in the night hours that followed. However, the Holy Spirit of God reminded me of many promises in the Bible that I had read and memorized since 1963. One such promise was what Jesus said, "I will never leave or forsake you"(see Hebrews 13:5). So, who wouldn't be okay when in the presence of Almighty God. Each new day brought its own struggles, but each new day was a gift from God, and has continued to be so. Some special blessings that have given me great strength have been friends who care and the bond of love from family members. My home church has been and remained a refuge and a tower of blessing too. There are so many cancer patients today. People have their own "journey" in standing against cancer. I feel that people need sup- port and special encouragement when fighting off cancer. I use that wording because it is so vital that anyone with cancer must make a decision to live, and not to give up on recovery. We need hope, laughter, beauti- ful music, healthy foods, rest, posi- tive friendships, and those who believe in our recovery, surround- ing us. We certainly do not need to hear tales of how someone else had our same type of cancer and died. I have learned to say, "If this doesn't have a happy ending then keep it to yourself please." Constant questions, from kind people, even become difficult at times. I have a friend who answers, "working on good." When friends ask how I'm doing, I often answer, "I'm doing." That usually brings a smile or a chuckle. I know that Jesus has healed me of cancer, and I know that some people still doubt that fact, but we must decide, deep within our own heart, that we are choosing to believe God's Word over man's word. We need to give God the glory for our healing, for if God does not bless surgery, chemo or radiation, our bodies will not heal. I'm thankful for good doctors and excellent medical facilities that are still avail- able to us. Jehovah Rapha is the Hebrew wording for God who heals. Jeho- vah Rapha Ministry to Cancer patients was birthed within my heart because there exists a great need for a Christian ministry that brings hope and encouragement. Almost everyone knows someone with cancer, or a cancer survivor. As mentioned, healing comes from the Lord, but He often heals through the prayers of God's peo- ple. We Christians are God's hands extended to a hurting world. Jehovah Rapha Ministry to Can- cer Patients will be meeting the first Thursday of each month. Our first dinner meeting will be Thurs- day, February 2nd beginning at 6 p.m. Come to the Sweet Life Cafe Patricia Martin GodTalk at New Life Assembly in Corning, 660 Solano Street (next door to Sav More Market). There will always be a tasty dinner (healthy food), a guest speaker, great music, times of sharing and prayer for those who desire it, resources of helpful materials, cre- ative helps for maintain- ing hope, healing scrip- tures and more. Friend- ships will develop over a period of time and posi- tive networking oppor- tunities. This ministry out- reach is for all people, of all faiths, who have can- cer or are cancer sur- vivors. You may bring your spouse; care provider or a friend too. Dinner is $6 per person and we need you to RSVP at least one week before each meeting. Please call by Jan. 25 for our first meeting. Parking is available on the church grounds. Questions are wel- come so feel free to call. Leave a message if needed and we will return your call. Pastors, please also feel free to call Pastor J.R. Gonzales if you need more infor- mation. New Life Assembly's number is 530-824-3426. Interest- ed people may also call Patricia Martin at 530-824-0411 or Carole Clark at 530-824-1810. Come and be blessed. Patricia Martin is the founder of God's Precious Jewels, a ministry to Native American children on reservations all over the Western United States. She is based in Red Bluff and found her healing from cancer where she lives with her God. Sanctity of Human Life Week Cross Project Special to the DN Saturday, Jan. 21, about 3000 crosses will be installed along Interstate 5, south of Red Bluff, depicting the num- ber of children's lives lost as a result of abortions each day in the United States. A community-wide effort including Christian high schools, college students, churches and pregnancy help centers from the area will be installing these crosses. This display will educate well over a mil- lion travelers that will pass by during the two weeks of the devastating toll abortion takes of our unborn each year. The crosses will remain for the week before and after Jan. 22, which is Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, in the hope that many in the North State and those passing through will reflect on what we are doing in the name of "choice". It is our prayerful hope that abortion can be reduced or eliminated by helping mothers carry and raise their babies or to choose adoption as the only humane alternative. *The number of abortions is a conservative estimate based on statistical data from the Center for Disease Con- trol and Alan Gutmacher-research affiliate of Planned Par- enthood Federation of America—the nations largest abor- tion provider and pro-abortion organization.
