4B Daily News – Saturday, January 21, 2012 WORLD BRIEFING Romney, Gingrich neck and neck in SC CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — On the eve of a Southern showdown, Mitt Romney conceded Friday he's in a tight race with Newt Gingrich for Satur- day's South Carolina prima- ry in a Republican cam- paign suddenly turned tur- bulent. It's ''neck and neck,'' Romney declared, while a third presidential contender, former Sen. Rick Santorum, swiped at both men in hopes of springing yet another campaign surprise. Several days after fore- casting a Romney victory in his state, Sen. Jim DeMint said the campaign's first Southern primary was now a two-man race between the former Massachusetts gov- ernor, who has struggled in recent days with questions about his personal wealth and taxes, and Gingrich, the former House speaker who has been surging in polls after a pair of well-received debate performances. The stakes were high as Republicans sought a chal- lenger to Democratic Presi- dent Barack Obama. Televi- sion advertising by the can- didates and their supporters exceeded $10 million here, much of it spent in the past two weeks, and mailboxes were stuffed with campaign flyers. France threatens early exit from war KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — France's threat Friday to withdraw early from Afghanistan after an Afghan soldier killed four French troops and wound- ed 15 is a setback for the U.S.-led coalition's efforts to build a national army and allow foreign troops to go home. The deadly shooting — the second against French forces in a month — is the latest in a rising number of disturbing attacks in which Afghan security forces or infiltrators have turned their guns on coali- tion forces. It came during an espe- cially deadly 24 hours for the international coali- tion, with six U.S. Marines killed in a heli- copter crash Thursday night in southern Afghanistan. French President Nico- las Sarkozy, who faces a potentially tough re-elec- tion campaign this spring, reacted swiftly and stern- ly to the killing of the French troops, who were unarmed when they were shot during a physical training exercise. He ordered French forces to stop training Afghan forces and suspended joint patrols. ''The French army is not in Afghanistan so that Afghan soldiers can shoot at them,'' Sarkozy said in Paris. ''From now on, all the operations of training and combat help by the French army are suspend- ed.'' US mulls closing Syria embassy WASHINGTON (AP) — The State Department said Friday it ''may have no choice'' but to close the U.S. embassy in Dam- ascus and remove all US personnel from the coun- try wracked by a 10- month revolt against the regime of President Bashar Assad unless Assad's government takes extra steps to protect the mission. The department issued a statement late Friday noting that the Obama administration has ''seri- ous concerns about the deteriorating security sit- uation in Damascus, including the recent spate of car bombs and about the safety and security of embassy personnel.'' The uprising against Assad has killed an esti- mated 5,400 people since March. Although the revolt began with mostly peaceful protests, an increasingly strong armed element has developed, and many people are now fighting the regime. The department said the administration has asked Syria to take addi- tional security measures to protect the U.S embassy and that the Syr- ian government ''is con- sidering that request.'' But it also said it warned Assad's govern- ment that ''unless con- crete steps are taken in the coming days we may have no choice but to close the mission.'' Congress postpones bill targeting movie and music piracy WASHINGTON (AP) — Caving to a massive campaign by Internet services and their mil- lions of users, Congress indefinitely postponed legislation Friday to stop online piracy of movies and music cost- ing U.S. companies bil- lions of dollars every year. Critics said the bills would result in censorship and stifle Internet innovation. The demise, at least right holders at least $500 million in lost rev- enue. New Zealand police raided homes and businesses linked to the founder, Kim Dotcom, on Friday and seized guns, millions of dollars and nearly $5 million in luxury cars, officials there said. All 6 killed in helicopter crash were Hawaii-based Marines HONOLULU (AP) — All six Marines killed in the crash of a U.S. helicopter in Afghanistan were based in Hawaii, a Hawaii congresswoman said Friday. The CH-53D heli- copter crashed Thursday in Afghanistan's south- ern province of Hel- mand. U.S. Rep. Colleen for the time being, of the anti-piracy bills was a clear victory for Sili- con Valley over Holly- wood, which has cam- paigned for a tougher response to online pira- cy. The legislation also would cover the coun- terfeiting of drugs and car parts. Congress' qualms underscored how Inter- net users can use their collective might to block those who want to change the system.
