Top Fuelers grab awards Walker hopes to return for NFC title game SANTA CLARA (AP) — San Francisco tight end Delanie Walker has returned to practice for the first time since breaking his left jaw in two places late in the regular season and hopes to be healthy enough to play in the NFC championship game. Walker had the wires removed on Monday and took part in practice on a limited basis with no contact on Wednesday. He was out there again during the open media portion on Thursday. ''I didn't do too much, so I won't say I was rusty,'' Walker said before Thurs- day's practice. ''I feel like I was good. Everybody said I looked faster and that I looked like I was over-hyper. Because you get back on the field, you try to do every- thing full speed.'' Coach Jim Harbaugh said Thursday that Walker's status is up to team doctors and Walker said he will push to get on the field on Sunday against the New York Giants. ''If they leave it up to me, of course I'm going to play,'' Walker said. ''I want to help my team out, and this is a big game, and I feel like if I'm out there maybe I can help out with the offense.'' Walker broke his jaw in two places when he took a knee to the face. SANTA CLARA (AP) — Erik Howard's memories of the play remain vivid more than two decades later. The former Giant will never forget fighting through blockers to knock the ball out of Roger Craig's hands, forcing the fumble that helped lead New York to its second Super Bowl title and ended the San Francisco 49ers' quest for a third straight championship. Clarence "Bud" Adams moved to a rural area of Klamath Falls, Ore., when he was a sophomore in high school after growing up in Red Bluff. He spent three years at Henley High School, where he competed in track and football and met his future wife, he said. He and his other team members will be inducted into the Henley High School Athletic Hall of Fame, today. Adams, a volunteer with the 5:30 p.m. STARS program through the Tehama County Sheriff's Office, received his invitation in December. He is planning on bringing along his friend, all four of his children and a couple of his grandchildren to the reception dinner, he said. Adams' brother-in-law, who lives in the Klamath Falls area, was also on the team and will be sharing the honor with him. Looking back, Adams remem- bered how special the team was. "We dominated in football and track," he said. "It was fun playing on a team that won all the time." A coach used to joke that his team was so much bigger than the competition because they were farmer's kids, used to lifting bags of potatoes all day, Adams said. Adams played offensive and defensive end and halfback, he said. Of the 60 original members of the team, at least 24 are scheduled to appear, he said. Some are ill and oth- ers have passed away. Adams' sister, who still lives in the Klamath Falls area, was a cheer- leader at the same time. He hopes the cheerleaders will be recognized as well. "They were very much part of the team," he said. Adams moved back to Red Bluff in 1955 and worked as a Southern Pacific train engineer. But it is far from the only postseason moment the teams share. The Giants and 49ers met six times in the playoffs between the 1981 and '94 seasons with the victor going on to win the Super Bowl in four of those cases. The rivalry featured Hall of Fame players like Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and Ronnie Lott on San Francisco, and Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson for the Giants. There were great plays and memorable moments through the years, but the most famous came in the only previous conference championship game between these teams following the 1990 sea- son. ''You were playing legends: Montana and Jerry Rice and those guys,'' Howard said. ''That team was always at the top of the league in the standings. We knew those would be big, exciting games. Those were the games that you live for. You carry them with you for- ever.'' The 49ers were shooting for a third straight Super Bowl title that season, with the Giants providing the stiffest obstacle. Both teams started the year 10-0 before losing the week before a highly anticipated Monday night matchup. The 49ers won that game 7-3 at Candlestick Park, earning them home-field advantage for the rematch seven weeks later. San Francisco led that game 13-9 early in the fourth quarter before Leonard Marshall knocked out Montana with a crushing hit from behind. Gary Reasons then had a 30-yard run on a fake punt to set up Matt Bahr's fourth field goal to make it 13-12. The 49ers just needed to run out the clock to seal the win. But on a first-and-10 from the Giants 40 with less than 3 minutes to go, Craig ran up the middle and Howard shed his block- ers and got his helmet on the ball. It popped loose and Taylor recov- ered at the New York 43 with 2:36 to go.
