4A Daily News – Thursday, January 19, 2012 Pastimes The Art of Dr. Seuss in Redding From Jan. 21 through April 15, Turtle Bay Exploration Park will pre- sent The Art of Dr. Seuss—A Retrospective Exhibition and Touring Sculpture Garden, cele- brating the art and life of Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss). This exhibit chronicles the common artistic links found throughout his 65 years of creativity. The exhibition begins with his early drawings in Life magazine, includes his editorial, advertising, military, and book illus- trations, and finally, his Secret Art collection. Works in the exhibition have been re-created from significant public and pri- vate collections, including the University of Califor- nia San Diego archives, the Lyndon Baines John- son Presidential Library, and the Estate of Dr. Seuss, and feature rare and never-before-seen images from the 1920s to '90s. Additionally, this exhi- bition features a larger- than-life view of the most famous characters created by Dr. Seuss. The Cat in the Hat, The Grinch, Sam I Am from Green Eggs and Ham, Yertle the Tur- tle and The Lorax (Seuss's groundbreaking environmental book) are Immortalized in bronze as a tribute to the literary and artistic legacy of Theodor Geisel. The creation of the Dr. Seuss Bronze Collection marks the first time intimate and large-scale bronze sculp- tures based upon his work have ever been made available for public exhi- bition and acquisition. These works range in size from fifteen-inch maque- ttes (small-scale studies) to twelve-foot monumen- tal works. Geisel sin- gle-handedly forged a new genre of art that falls somewhere between the Surrealist Movement of the early 20th century and the inspired non- sense of a child's class- room doodles. Using an uncanny visual wit and premoni- tion, Seuss's "hip ness" somehow rivals the coolest postmodern art on the scene today. As children, we grew up on Seuss's playful verse and zealous imagination. As adults, we realize that Theodor Geisel is not just an important and innovative 20th-century painter, but one of the few artists working in any medium who knows how to make people happy while at the same time inspiring them to think. His unique artistic vision emerged as the golden thread which linked every facet of his varied career, and his art- work became the plat- form from which he delivered forty-four chil- dren's books, over 400 World War II political cartoons, hundreds of advertisements, and works embody a magical combination of the per- son and persona of Ted Geisel and Dr. Seuss and, in many ways, are what one imagines the Good Doctor would create late at night in his hilltop stu- dio. At other times, the imagery and titles stretch well beyond all precon- ceived notions. In either case, Seuss delivers a feast of visual stunners, dense with ideas.
