6B Daily News – Saturday, January 14, 2012 WORLD BRIEFING US warns Iran to leave Persian Gulf oil route alone WASHINGTON (AP) — Tensions rising by the day, the Obama administration said Friday it is warning Iran through public and private channels against any action that threatens the flow of oil from the Persian Gulf. Spokesmen were vague on what the United States would do about Iran's threat to block the strategic Strait of Hormuz, but military officials have been clear that the U.S. is readying for a possible naval clash. That prospect is the latest flashpoint with Iran, and one of the most serious. Although it currently overshadows the threat of war over Iran's disputed nuclear program, perhaps beginning with an Israeli military strike on Iran's nuclear structure, both simmering crises raise the possibility of a shooting war this year. ''We have to make sure we are ready for any situation and have all options on the table,'' Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said, addressing a soldier's question Thursday about the overall risk of war with Iran. For several reasons, the risk of open conflict with Tehran appears higher in this election year than at any point since Pres- ident Barack Obama took office with a pledge to try to bridge 30 years of enmity. A clash would represent a failure of U.S. policy on several fronts, and vault now-dormant national security con- cerns into the presidential election contest. South Carolina earns reputation for nasty campaigns COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — In mailboxes across South Car- olina in 2007, likely Republican voters received a Christmas card signed by ''The Romney Family'' with a quotation from a 19th century Mormon leader suggesting God had several wives. Mitt Romney's campaign, just a few weeks away from the 2008 presidential primary in a state where evangelicals look skeptically on the former Massachusetts governor's Mormon faith, condemned the bogus card as politics at its worst. The sender never took credit. And it was just another anonymous shot in the endless volleys of nasty campaigning in South Carolina. While attack politics happen in every state, South Carolina's reputation for electoral mudslinging and bare-knuckled brawling is well-earned. Why there? Largely because of the high stakes. South Carolina has always picked the GOP's eventual nominee since the primary's inception in 1980. And money, nerves and time are usually run- ning out for almost everyone but the front-runner after Iowa and New Hampshire, often leading challengers to go for the jugular. ''The ghost of Lee Atwater hangs over South Carolina like a morning fog and permeates every part of the state's politics,'' says Scott Huffmon, a Winthrop University political science pro- fessor. Atwater, who died 20 years ago, was South Carolina's most famous political operative and a master of slash-and-burn politics. Obama seeks power to merge agencies in election-year pitch WASHINGTON (AP) — Seeking more power to shrink the government, President Barack Obama on Friday suggested smashing six economic agencies into one, an election-year idea intended to halt bureaucratic nightmares and force Republicans to back him on one of their own favorite issues. ''The government we have is not the government we need,'' Obama told business owners he'd gathered at the White House. Lawmakers seemed willing to at least consider his ideas. Sounding like a manager of a disorganized company, and looking like one by pointing to slides as he spoke, Obama asked Congress to give him a kind of reorganization power no president has had since Ronald Reagan. It would guarantee Obama a vote, within 90 days, on any idea he offers to consolidate agencies, provided it saves money and cuts the government. His first target: Merging six major trade and commerce agen- cies into a one-stop-shopping department for American busi- nesses. The Commerce Department would be among those that would cease to exist. Congress would keep the final say, but Obama would have a stronger hand to skip much of the outside lobbying and fighting and get right to a vote. To Subscribe Call Today!
