Saturday, January 14, 2012 – Daily News Religion Faith&Worship Parenting conference Calvary Chapel Red Bluff is excited to invite parents to our Parenting Conference from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Satur- day, Jan. 28. Pastor Craig Caster of Family Discipleship Min- istries will be with us again teaching practical biblical skills that will help parents disciple their children. Topics will include "teens" and "blended families" and "how to effectively disciple and discipline your children". As parents, we all struggle at times, and have many-ques- tions about our parenting effectiveness. We hope you will encourage your church family to come. Parents will also receive conference handouts and discounts on books and video teachings. The vision of Family Discipleship Ministries is to equip and support parents, enabling them to meet the needs with- in their family. Since they began, thousands of Christians have completed FDM's Biblical training classes in mar- riage, parenting, discipleship and dating relationships. Parents can print the register form online at ccredbluff.org and return it with payment to Calvary Chapel Red Bluff, 12375 Paskenta Rd, Red Bluff, 96080 or call (530) 527-8219 and ask for Pastor Greg Wagner. The cost is $20 per couple or $10 for a single parent. This price includes Saturday sessions and a continental breakfast that begins at 8 a.m. In an effort to accommodate parents, we will be providing limited childcare until filled or if pre-reg- istered by Jan. 25. Voices of Faith: How would you best describe God? CHANGE THROUGH ISLAM Syed E. Hasan, Ph.D., Midland Islamic Council: Before the advent of Islam, polytheism and idol worship were the accepted way of life in Arabia. People believed that god has human form and needs and had husbands, wives and sons. They worshipped statues made of stone, wood and gold. In Ka'ba, the most sacred mosque in Islam, there were some 360 statutes representing deities worshipped by the various tribes. When Prophet Muhammad began to spread the message of Islam and invite people to believe in Allah, they chal- lenged him and raised questions about the nature of this god. The Qur'an answered such questions in just a few words that make up one of its shortest chapters, which says: "He is Allah, the One; the Eternal, the Absolute; He neither begets nor is born; and there is none like Him." (The Qur'an, 112:1-4). TRANSCENDENT AND IMMANENT A.M. Bhattacharyya, an active member of Hindu com- munity: The most cogent description of God is in Upan- ishads, the "knowledge part" of Vedas. Ancient Vedic seers in their deep meditative state of mind envisioned one supreme being as the sole creator, the sustainer and the fun- damental substance of the universe. They named him 'Brah- man' — the infinite expanse. Brahman (God), the self-effulgent, underlying reality, is unchanging, limitless, omnipotent, omnipresent and eter- nally pure. Scriptures call the supreme being "One without a second, ultimate reality, infinite consciousness, infinite knowledge and all-bliss." Upanishads identify Brahman with the inner self (atman) of every living being. Mandukya Upanishad says, "This atman is Brahman." We all have divine spirit in our inner selves. Church news Drawing a Line in the Sand Part II The Line in the Sand Event held in Pasadena's Rosebowl on Nov. 11 origi- nated in a vision God gave to Pastor Grace Falany in which God showed her the line drawn in the sand of the Alamo fortress by her com- mander, William Barrett Travis, on March 5, 1836. According to Alamo tradi- tion Travis gathered his men in the plaza during a lull in the cannon fire. He told them there would be no conventional victory. He offered them the opportuni- ty to attempt escape, or to choose in death the hope of life for Texas. He encour- aged them to sell their lives dearly, and he asked them to cross the line. It is important for every Christian – and anyone seeking abundant life – to know what this line say today. It doesn't say, "This far and no farther." Many Christians want to say this to the encroaching secular culture, but that creates a defensive posture. We win neither life nor football games on defense. Travis' line says, "Your old defi- cient life is on one side. Now cross over and begin your new life of abun- dance." The Rose Bowl event was meant to symbol- ize this choice for Christians as we are invited into a cul- ture of repentance and Great Commission life in the eter- nal Kingdom of God. Not everyone is given opportunity to lead as a grain of wheat that falls to the ground – as Jesus depicts Himself in John 12. Not everyone can handle the opportunity when given it. Many church leaders today claim to want trans- formative revival – the promised Great Awakening of the Kingdom – but insist we must have unity before we can effectively seek that awakening. The Church was not united when the great awakenings of the past struck. She became less united when the awaken- ings got under way. Truth is few have vision and fewer still the courage to pursue the vision they have. Only when the fruit of revival becomes evident do we tend to unite around it. Unity does not produce revival; revival produces unity. But repentance – as unfolding lifestyle – does lead to revival. God gave me a vision when I visited the Alamo in 2009. He showed how – in the crucible of siege, assault, and battle unto death three transformations took place in the gathered ones. The first was ethnic; the defenders represented a plethora of tribes, including Hispanics, Blacks and Natives Americans. In the crucible these people – who were more prejudiced than we – became an authentic community; they had each others' backs. That wasn't all the community building, however. The co-comman- ders were a Baptist and a Catholic; the rest were every shade of Christian, as their letters attest. They became one Body over 13 days; they fought for one another as one Body. Final- ly God showed that they all went willingly toward the place of danger, thinking their lives not too precious an offering for the promise they pursued for the sake of others. These are the fea- tures God calls for in com- bination as He forges a cul- Church News? e-mail: clerk@redbluffdailynews.com or Fax: 527-9251 or drop off at 545 Diamond Ave., Red Bluff ture of repentance in prepa- ration for the Great Awakening. We cannot pro- duce the first two, but we can choose to go to the place of danger, where our Lord will pro- duce them in us. What occurs in the Alamo is not unlike what occurs in the great Jewish Temple in Jerusalem when Jesus draws a line in its dust. A woman has been taken in the act of adultery and the James Wilson GodTalk Pharisees – the self appoint- ed masters of political cor- rectness for their day – want to stone her. They don't get it that they have misread Torah, or that their hypocrisy is on display in their failure to prosecute the equally guilty man – not to mention their lack of excuse for spending their days peering in bedroom win- dows looking for wrongdo- ing. But their worst expres- sion of willful ignorance is their failure to see the opportunity to cross Jesus' line and stand in the culture of life – or remain where they are in a cul- ture of death. To activate that choice they must stand with the Lord of Life regardless of who else keeps Him company. To express that choice they will have to do what He commands solely because He commands it, knowing nothing will change in their lives as long as they do only what is right in their own truncated vision. They will have to turn away from what they have created to face what only He can create. But that is the very essence of the culture of repentance called for at the Rose Bowl – and in the Alamo.
