Setting it straight A story in Wednesday's paper about Rep. Wally Herger retiring and Sen. Doug LaMalfa seeking the seat contained an error. Pending any legislation changes, under the Top-Two Open Primary Act all candidates will be listed on the ballot regardless of party preference. That means LaMalfa and Jim Reed will face each other in the primary. Bella, belle of the ball disappears Since a number of readers have commented on my column picture, showing myself and "Bella," I thought it appropriate to bring read- ers up to date. Bella was about 14 inches long at the time of the pic- ture. She was cute, cuddly and curi- ous. She spent some time with Daughter, number 1, who is very busy and realized that Bella required a lot of attention. I had the chance to re-own Bella and she even came with an additional friend, "Baxter," a mini Dachshund. It was one of those times when Angus our cat had gone to heaven after 24 yrs. of life so we were at a little loss of pets at our house. Yes, we would take in the two cute animals. We noticed that Bella had grown a bit with the fluffy fur that covered her pretty eyes and Baxter seemed to show a bit of love for her too. Two nice dog pens, food, cleaning items and a huge, comfortable pillow for two dogs to rest upon each evening in front of the fireplace on cold, winter evenings in the living room was our new décor. As I quietly read a book or watched TV during the evening, I noted that Bella was no longer only 14 inches long. She was more like the size of the largest measuring ruler; well I estimated she is in the neighborhood of 42 inches long including her tail. Since we have not yet figured how to budget every trip to the dog trimming salon, we have allowed her fluffy hair to grow. The beauteous hair hangs over her eyes while she still flirts with Baxter and us human beings. Flirting and dancing on two feet with people is cute, however she often needs a bath after her contin- uous rolling in the mud outside and bringing it inside to us. Baxter who we think is her boyfriend tolerates most of her shenanigans. Baxter's size is quite a bit smaller than Bella. Baxter has shorter legs, requiring a major slow down when the two of them walk on leashes in the neighbor- hood. You guessed it; I mostly have to take one dog at a time in order to keep both of us standing on our feet. Baxter is relatively calm but is constantly pushed by Bella to do something fast and furi- ous. Bella did just such a thing last week while we were gone to eat dinner at the New Asian Restaurant. As we returned home, parked our car and went up the steps to our porch we found both Bella and Baxter in the wire cage we had left on the front porch by our door. Wow! The two dogs were in the cage. How did they get there? They were in the backyard when we left just about an hour and a half earlier. All of a sudden we guessed that they must have gotten out of the backyard somehow. The tele- phone rang a few minutes after we got them inside the house it was our wonderful neighbor Sue, who called to say she was the one who got the two rascals off the street and into the pen on the porch. They were headed away from our street. Kinner - Kerksieck engaged Carolyn Barber By now readers are getting a pretty good idea about our dog adventure. Yes, they got out of the back yard by digging under a fence with the encouragement of Bella. It appears that Baxter is as suspicious of Bella as are some husbands are. I think he notices that she sees herself as the leader of everything in her life and she pushes him to partici- pate. It is sort of like when adult husbands and wives call the shots on each other. Husband and I have put numerous rocks, boards, miscellaneous sturdy items against the fence to fill in the dog digging holes while we get some wire to put in front of the present fence so that we won't miss those dogs too often. The whole learning experience seems to rest on Bella's personality, she is definitely no longer the "Belle of the Ball" perhaps she had climbed the ladder and fence in order to be "Boss of All." The following is a learned proverb regarding the decision to own a dog… "He or she who owns dog must also own energy, patience, dog shampoo, good neighbors and a sturdy fence." Honorable H&C B Carolyn Barber has been writing her column in the Daily News since 1992. It appears on Saturdays. She can be contacted by e-mail at hur- car@yahoo.com.
