4A Daily News – Thursday, January 12, 2012 Pastimes Fiddle and piano concert Tehama Concert Series' next concert, Valeri Glava & Lee Tam- boulin, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18 at the First Church of God in Red Bluff. Valeri Glava, a Musical Journey, offers an incredible smorgasbord of flavorful music from classical to blue grass, from Broadway to the theaters of Europe. This concert features world renowned artists Valeri Glava, violin and Lee Tam- boulin, piano. They will make you laugh, they will bring you to tears, but you will never forget this con- cert. At eight years old, Valeri began his violin instruction at a school for musically gifted children in Chisin- au, Moldova (Former USSR). At age 15 he entered the Stefan Neaga College of Music and then graduat- ed from "Gavriil Muzicescu" Con- servatory of Music, studying under Efim Zubritskii. There he expanded his repertoire with many different styles of music, gaining high acclaim in the music world. At age 23, Valeri conducted the orchestra representing the USSR and played solo violin by special invitation from the United Nations in New York. He hold degrees in Professor of Violin, Conductor and Violin Soloist and is fluent in Russ- ian, French, Romanian and English. Valeri is currently living in Las Arts & entertainment Comedy performances The Merry Standish Comedy group plans to do as many new live shows as it can before the Mayans return and the world ends. The new show, Still Standish, is an evening of stand- up comedy featuring Aaron Standish, Liz Merry and Roland Allen. The group will perform at Manton Corners Saturday, Feb. 4, Duffy's Tavern in Chico Feb. 12, Old City Hall in Redding Feb. 18 and Chico Women's Club March 3. All shows start at 8 p.m. and admission is $10. The State Theatre in Red Bluff will host the show at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 10. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Second Saturday Art Night The tradition of Second Saturday Art Night in Red- ding will continue at Gallery 833 Fine Art, 833 Mistle- toe Lane, Suite A4. Association to host Yupo workshop The public is invited to attend a workshop "Playing with Yupo" 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21 at Snug Harbor Mobile Home Park, 600 Rio Vista Ave. in Red Bluff. This workshop fea- tures Yupo paper with watercolor or acrylic paints. Yupo is a water- proof, tree-free, synthet- ic paper manufactured from polypropylene pel- lets. Its super smooth, bright-white surface can be easily wiped clean and repainted making it ideal for creating numer- ous special effects such as stamping and impress- ing images into paint. Chinese Lion Dance The public is invited to attend a Chinese Lion Dance to celebrate the Chinese New Year — the year of the Dragon. The Lion Dance will be presented by Weaverville Lion Dancers and the event will feature traditional Chi- nese New Year activities and Chinese tea and cookies will be served. Die Fledermaus The Shasta College Division of Arts, Communications and Social Sciences announces the upcoming perfor- mances of Johann Strauss's comic opera "Die Fleder- maus." A hilarious and tuneful show, "Fledermaus" (The Bat's Revenge) is an enduring and popular operetta from the pen of the Viennese Waltz King. Performances are held at 7 p.m. from Thursday, Feb. 2, through Saturday, Feb. 4, in the Shasta College Theatre. The final performance will be a matinee at 3 p.m. Sun- day.
