Saturday, January 7, 2012 – Daily News Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith In a chaotic world, what can faith groups do? McClatchy Newspapers PRAY, TRUST, RESTORE The Rev. R.L. Baynham, pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church, Kansas City, Kan.: Since the beginning of time, we have been exposed to the behavior of man and his relationship with the world. Many times that behavior has been evil and mean. Today, we watch and/or listen to the events that make us cringe and feel the loss and hopelessness. There are at least three things we can do: pray, trust and restore. The prayer suggested is intercessory. It is praying for the world in chaos, for families suffering the atrocities of evil and for the will of God in the lives of all people. I am sure most of us believe that this is already being done. It would be powerful if we could be consistent in our praying. One of the most difficult things in this world is find- ing a level of trust. We have seen what greed does to people; it sets up an environment of distrust. Trust then is the ability to live in the right relationship with one's neighbor and appreciate their contribution to maintain- ing wholesomeness. When someone fails to live or identify with the moral values of society, it becomes extremely difficult to allow them back in a place where they can repeat the same behavior. But with the grace of God, they won't repeat that behavior. INTERFAITH EMPHASIS Lama Chuck Stanford, Rime Buddhist Center & Monastery, Kansas City, Mo.: There are many causes and conditions for chaos in the world. Sadly, some faith groups, themselves, cause some of the chaos in the world. We have seen fighting not only between reli- gions, but also within religions. Also, the rapid rise of fundamentalism threatens the religious freedom for all of us. That is why interfaith dialogue is more important now than ever. All of us face similar individual, societal and environmental challenges. Divergent faith groups working together (rather than separately) can best solve these challenges. Many leaders of various faiths have recognized the importance of interfaith dialogue. Pope Paul II called for interfaith dialogue as a key component of Christian preparation for the Great Jubilee of the year 2000. His Holiness the Dalai Lama has always emphasized the importance of interfaith discussion. His Holiness said, "I have for many years now engaged in interfaith dialogue and understanding with the basic belief that all the major religions of the world have the same potential to transform people into better human beings." We are no longer just a global community but rather all part of one human family. All religions encourage good actions, moral virtues and personal responsibility and see the world and our lives as sacred and meaning- ful. That is why different faith groups working togeth- er can best solve many of the problems facing our world. Drawing a line in the sand Traditional accounts of the Battle for the Alamo include the breathtaking story of William Travis gathering the garrison on the last night and drawing a line in the sand. The line was not defensive – in the sense of "this far and no farther." It was offensive – as in "here I stand; in Christ I can do no other." Travis invited his men to escape if they could, or to step across the line and die with him, entering the Kingdom and making their lives count more in death than they had in life. The gathering in Pasadena's Rose Bowl was titled 11-11-11: A Line in the Sand. It saw itself as extending Travis' line to a time of worshipping and waiting upon the Lord for cleans- ing the Church and resurrection of city, state, and nation. It was planned as a time for dying to self that our lives might count the more. Lou Engle planned The Call, Detroit, in the same day and spirit. I was privileged to par- ticipate in the California event. Press accounts – at least of the Detroit event – quoted Muslims fear- ing violence from amped up Christians who believe Jesus is the exclusive Lord and that Lou Engle has targeted them. I have discussed his plans with Engle personally and the only enemies he identifies are Christian triumphal- ism and lethargy. He does claim exclu- sive lordship for Jesus – as any Christ- ian should – but show me a religion that does not make such exclusive claims, and please don't start with Islam. As usual, no Christians were interviewed. The stadium was well prepared. PrayNorthState was blessed to lead a team of close to forty prayer warriors on a prayer walk through the interior of the Rose Bowl two days prior to the gathering. We celebrated the Lord's Supper in the endzone and prayed throughout the field, the seats, and the tunnels beneath the stadium with the blessing of manage- ment and the Pasadena Police Department. We prayed for the greater Los Angeles region, named Yah Vitte (House of God) by the Native Americans who first lived there. God released scriptures from Zechariah 8:18-23 to the effect that fasts would turn to festivals in Judah and inhabitants from many cities would come together to seek the Lord. They would come following the Jews. Zechari- ah 9:9 was released that we should come humbly as Jesus did. Finally He released John 10:1-5 to the effect that only Jesus is the authentic shepherd of the sheep. That rules out the Christian superstars that the Church raises up as our authority. We declared the forgiveness of sin, of occultic groups and activities, and all idolatries on the land in the Name of that same Jesus who comes on a donkey. We know the enemy of life can stand only on unforgiveness; he is powerless against forgiveness. The testimonies heard at the event itself were amazing. Pastor Jeanne Birch spoke of the unity that prevailed in the Church of Pasadena since pas- tors came together to address the gang issue. God first told them they were the biggest gang lords in the city because of their own territoriality. From that humbling time on they committed to weekly prayer in the stadium press box. Murders in Pasadena fell from 14 in 2007 to two in 2008. Three elected members of the California State Assembly witnessed on their knees before the crowd. They declared that if James Wilson GodTalk we would heal the state house we must first restore the church house – through ongoing repentance. Many called the crowd to a culture of repentance and Pastor Louis Mogande prophe- sied a new move of God akin to the Jesus People. (This leader totally con- firms that word; I have been hearing it for awhile now.) A representative of Israel's Prime Minister led the crowd in prayer and received the blessing of representatives of the ancient nations of Assyria and Egypt. The delegation from South Korea closed out the evening with their own brand of worship that is as ecstat- ic as it is grace-filled and power packed. The crowd – which approached twenty thousand in the evening – worshipped with abandon. Rain was forecast and much preparatory prayer begged God for good weather. Although skies clouded and drops began to fall five times they were ordered stopped in Jesus' name by members of the crowd and they stopped. God was surely present and He surely responds to humbled hearts presented to Him. Bottom Line: This writer is pleased and proud to have been part of A Line in the Sand. But we really need to enter that culture of repentance. It is not a punishment; it is our privilege. James A.
