Iwasrecentlyaskedto post a purported prophetic word on the National Day of Repen- tance web site. It said — in view of the pattern of lawless- ness in gov- ernment at all levels — it was time for the chil- dren of God to recognize He has blessed our faith- fulness and given us fa- vor at this time to stand against this very lawless- ness. I gave it a "thumbs down" because it was clearly not a word from the Lord our God. How did I know? I flunked the Sons of Issachar test. Issachar is one of the twelve sons of Jacob, one of the twelve Patriarchs af- ter Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob of the Hebrew peo- ple of the Old Testament. The sons of Issachar were said to be anointed with supernatural understand- ing of pragmatic times and seasons, their implications and consequences, and the currents of relationships and alliances. The purported pro- phetic word flunks the Sons test because it ig- nores the very real bank- ruptcy of the Body of Christ. Yes, there is a pro- nounced pattern of law- lessness at all levels of gov- ernment from the Presi- dent re-writing healthcare law and the First Amend- ment to ignoring immi- gration law to states tax- ing illegally under their laws and expelling Chris- tian groups from univer- sity campuses for insisting leaders accept their faith. Decorated Navy Chaplain Wes Modder has been re- lieved of duty and banned from his men for adhering to his faith in a counsel- ing session despite the fact his conduct is protected in federal law and naval reg- ulations. The jury is in on government lawlessness. But the Church has no moral high ground on which to stand. Mar- tin Luther King's favor- ite scripture — Amos 5:24 — calls for justice to flow like a mighty river and righteousness like an un- ending stream. Steward- ing this process is the job of the Church, not the gov- ernment which derives its just powers from the con- sent of the governed. Yet more than a third of evan- gelicals and an unknown number of Catholics and mainliners do not even vote — let alone vote intel- ligently. In California, at least, large majorities of Christians elect the lead- ers who re-define concepts from marriage to immi- gration law to suit donors instead of constituents. Non physicians perform abortions on our daugh- ters — this would be ille- gal on a family pet — and now legislators prepare to endorse assisted sui- cide despite overwhelm- ing evidence it is unneces- sary and open to massive abuse. The Church stood in the eighteenth century and a nation was founded on God's love and liberty. She stood in the nine- teenth century and slav- ery was abolished. She stood yet again in the twentieth century and ushered in authentic equality and respect be- tween the races. Where is the Church now that so fundamental a liberty as life is under unprece- dented attack through- out the so-called civilized world? Where is the Church — I mean each and every be- liever, not some ponder- ous resolution adopted in be-robed convention — in addressing the stalk- ers and sexual abusers in our own ranks? The per- centages of leaders who engage in these behaviors or cover them up is about the same in every denom- ination. The percentage of pastors and preach- ers who address socio- moral issues from their pulpits is correspondingly small across the board. As a young priest I informed my bishop I planned to ex- pel an admitted stalker from my congregation if he refused to leave his vic- tim alone; the bishop told me I could expect no back- ing from him. I did it any- way. When do the rest of us accept responsibility to be voices for justice and righteousness, with the proviso that our personal repentance must come ahead of the repentance we call out of government and society? The next National Day of Repentance is set for April 30. It inaugurates a week of prayer and fast- ing to culminate on May 7 and the National Day of Prayer. Californians are invited to our own state- wide Day of Repentance on September 9. Who will show up that God might show off in our presence? Who will show up at fu- ture hearings, at the bal- lot boxes, and in the cof- fee hours of our churches and the coffee rooms of our workplaces? God's fa- vor is not a reward for good behavior, but it is bestowed only on those He can trust. Are we will- ing to become such? We Christians have a mandate to address these issues in the public square, but we are going to have to re-earn the right to speak and — ironically — speaking out as we repent is part of that re-earning. He loves us, but He cannot be very proud of us in this hour. We need to re-take the Sons of Issachar test. The confessional area and sacristy, where priests vestments are traditionally kept, have been converted into cozy sleeping quarters complete with beds and nightstands. Ten large, handmade "protest" quilts hang on the walls of the vaulted- roof sanctuary — one for each full year a group of rebel occupants have been taking turns squat- ting night and day in this long-closed Roman Catho- lic church. "I find it beautiful," says Nancy Shilts, an 82-year- old former parishioner, as she settled in recently for her regular afternoon shift. "Mostly, it's quiet. I go for a walk around the inside of the church, so that I get my exercise. I watch TV. I do a lot of praying." The 11-year protest by Shilts and others, which has already spanned the tenure of three popes, may be near- ing an end. A state judge has or- dered the protesters to va- cate by as early as Friday. Protesters said this past Fri- day that they had gotten a temporary reprieve, but the Boston archdiocese, which is expected to oppose such a delay, has declined to com- ment. Organizers say they have no intention of leaving until the Boston archdiocese re- stores their parish's stand- ing or sells them the build- ing outright. They say they are prepared to be arrested as trespassers, if necessary. "This is our spiritual home," says Jon Rogers, a lead organizer.
