MARKETING/SALES Hal Nunn ASSOCIATE EDITOR Stephanie Crider PUBLISHER Bill Bowman INSIDE PUBLISHER'S PEN by BILL BOWMAN I think it was Mark Twain who said "If you have a job you love, you'll never work another day in your life." How true that is; and it certainly pertains to my job of publishing this community's weekly newspaper Up & Coming Weekly. 2012 marks our 17th year of marketing, promoting and showcasing the Fayetteville community, its people, unique culture and quality of life. Our pride in the Fayetteville, Fort Bragg and Cumberland County community shows in every issue of Up & Coming Weekly as our writers, local residents, businesses and organizations all come together to tout the local news, views, opinions, arts and entertainment venues that serve to define life in Cumberland County. Faced with a revolving population and challenging economy, it becomes apparent that strong, dedicated leadership is paving the way for a brighter and secure community for local residents. This is no time to be modest or shy about the accomplishments of our great city. This entire edition is dedicated to showcasing just a few of the achievements and accomplishments that propelled Fayetteville to All America City status. Our writers worked diligently and in concert with enthusiastic city staffers and local residents to tell this story. As we worked on this issue, we reflected back on the changes we all have seen in our community. I was here as a soldier in the '70s, so needless to say, I have seen Fayetteville in its full evolution from Fayettenam to Fayettenow! Our Associate Publisher Janice Burton moved to Fayetteville in 1997. She remembered the city from childhood trips with her parents to Fort Bragg. So when, in early 1998 we told her we were going downtown to a gallery crawl, she was a little amazed. She remarked at the time, "Are you sure we aren't Fayetteville's Weather Forecast January 6 Thursday January 5 Saturday January 7 Fayetteville's Weather Forecast Friday going to a bar crawl?" and followed up with, "My Dad would be really mad if he knew I was going to downtown Fayetteville on a Friday night." Oh, how times have changed! So, keep this issue! Send one to a friend. Show it off to those grumpy naysayers who say Fayetteville is not aggressive or progressive. Ha! And surely, show it off to that person who says "There is nothing to do in Fayetteville." So, on behalf of my very talented and dedicated staff of both Up & Coming Weekly and Kidsville News! along with our cadre of talented contributing writers, we want to say "thank you" for 17 great years. We are extremely proud to be Fayetteville's community weekly newspaper. We are proud to be a member of the newspaper industry and North Carolina Press Association. We are proud to be audited by the Circulation Verification Council (CVC) and tout that 79.6 percent of our local readers use the products, services and organizations showcased in our publication. This translates into our "trust" factor and that is what community newspapers are all about. Stay tuned. The best is yet to come and it's coming from the City of Fayetteville, County of Cumberland, Fort Bragg and the Fayetteville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. Enjoy and participate. Thank you for reading Up & Coming Weekly. Have a Happy New Year and remember, When it comes to the Fayetteville community: Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine! BILL BOMWAN, Publisher. COMMENTS?
