One day later, James Hinchcliffe suffered a life- threatening injury when he slammed into the turn three wall at more than 220 mph and a broken piece of his suspension pierced his left thigh. Hinchcliffe's ac- cident was unrelated to the three cars that had gone airborne, but one of Indy- Car's most popular drivers was rushed into surgery in critical condition and will miss Sunday's race. The four wrecks have many wondering if Sunday will see a safe race. "This will never be a safe race — it's an open wheel car going 230 mph over three and a half hours try- ing to win," said Rahal La- nigan Letterman Racing driver Oriol Servia. "Safe is not really what defines it. It will never be. But I think it could be safer than what we'll do Sunday." IndyCar officials aren't certain what caused the three cars to lift off the track following mild crashes. Although some wanted to point to the new body kits Chevy and Honda are allowed to use this season, most drivers doubted the manufactur- ers were to blame. And some have even grumbled that the wrecks cast an unfair pall over the race and created an unnec- essary hysteria. "I just think we need to be careful not to lose our heritage and the roots of what we do," said KV Rac- ing driver Sebastien Bour- dais, who praised the safety efforts as long as it didn't destroy "the pur- pose and the reason of why we do things we do and how we do it." "People make mistakes, whether it is human mis- takes, mechanical mistakes, it is part of what we do," he said. "That needs to be re- spected because when you travelatthespeedswetravel, things can go bad. When it goes bad, it shouldn't be, 'Oh my God, what just hap- pened?' What happened is what we do is dangerous." Indy FROM PAGE 1 one of the series for the Rockets. "This is a must-win game for us," he said. "Must-win time. You have to love it. It's the Western Conference finals. What better place to be? Going home and the sense of ur- gency is going to be there from the tip." Some things to know heading into Game 3. Howard'shealth Houston center Dwight Howard is listed as proba- ble for Game 3 after sprain- ing his left knee in Game 1. He was injured when team- mate Josh Smith crashed into him on Tuesday night and he struggled to get ready for Game 2. But he shook off the injury to fin- ish with 19 points and 17 rebounds in 40 minutes. Turnovers The Warriors finished with 16 turnovers in Game 2 and five of them came in a 10-minute span end- ing with about 10 min- utes left in the third quar- ter. Those miscues helped Houston erase a 17-point deficit and take a 58-55 lead. Golden State coach Steve Kerr pinpointed a reason for the turnovers. "I think sometimes our group competes so hard that the distinction be- tween making the simple play and playing as hard as you can gets blurred," he said. 3s, 3s and more 3s The Warriors and Rock- ets love long-range shoot- ing and showed it in the first two games of the se- ries. Don't expect that to change Saturday with some of the league's best 3-point shooters on the court. Golden State is av- eraging 29.3 3-point at- tempts in the postseason, which leads the NBA, and Houston is fourth with 27.6 tries a game. The Warriors also lead all playoff teams by making 11.1 a game to 9.6 by the Rockets. These teams have combined to make 33 3-pointers in this series, with the Warriors leading in that category with 18. Curry vs. Harden For a stretch Thurs- day night it seemed as if Curry and Harden were involved in a game of one- on-one with each player making shot after shot. Some of their teammates talked about enjoying the matchup within the game, but Kerr wasn't one of them. Warriors FROM PAGE 1 innings, 1-0 in the fourth inning. "Whereas at the beginning of the year, we stayed real positive and 'it'll turn around, it'll turn around.' We just had re- laxed at-bats." "Now everybody wants to step up and be the guy who gets the big hit in- stead of just moving the line like we were doing be- fore. We've got to get back to that." The lack of offense is putting particular pressure on the pitching which now has to contend with that in addition to a squirrelly defense. Starter Scott Ka- zmir, who hasn't won in his last seven starts, gave up a single to start the fifth while trying to hold a 1-0 lead. He picked up a sub- sequent bunt, then had to wait while first baseman Max Muncy, who'd also charged the ball, retreated to first. Muncy got there on time, but … "I took my eye off it a lit- tle bit," Muncy said in de- scribing the carnage. The ball came lose and three pitches later, Evan Long- oria turned the game around with a three-run homer. Kazmir took the blame for the loss on himself for throwing a pitch he wanted on the inside corner get back out over the middle of the plate. But as manager Bob Melvin said, "if it's one bad pitch that is beat- ing you, that means we're not giving him enough sup- port." This is the team that Washington joined with hopes of helping right the ship. Brought in as an aide to the infield defense, he saw not just the daily de- fensive faux pas from an infielder, but saw up close the offensive enigma Oak- land has morphed into. A team that scored 5.1 runs per game for the first 28 games has scored 2.9 in the last 17. There isn't a lot of pitch- ing or defense or coaching that can deal with that level of offensive sluggish- ness. Notes • The A's put left fielder Coco Crisp on the disabled list with disc problems in his neck. He will next meet the team back in Oakland this coming week. • Kendall Graveman was with the club Friday; he'll start Saturday's game, tak- ing the spot on the roster that had belonged to Crisp. • There hasn't been any baseball activity yet for Ike Davis, on the disabled list. A's FROM PAGE 1 yard Dog." He wasn't the only one struggling. The Hawks looked totally outclassed for one of the few times all season. The Cavaliers can wrap up the best-of-seven se- ries simply by winning at home. The next two are in Cleveland, beginning with Game 3 on Sunday night. Tristan Thompson led another dominating per- formance for the Cavaliers on the boards. He had 16 rebounds and Cleveland finished with a 47-39 ad- vantage. W hen T homp son dunked off a pass from James with just under 5 minutes remaining, the Cavaliers had a 93-74 lead and many Atlanta fans be- gan heading for the ex- its, perhaps knowing they had seen their team for the last time in this most un- expected season. Atlanta won a franchise-record 60 games to claim the top seed in the East, but the Hawks were picked apart by the best player in the world. Forget the Big Three. The Big One was plenty of the Cavaliers, who are two wins away from re- turning the NBA Finals and taking another crack at their first championship. This is why James re- turned to his de facto hometown after spending four years in Miami, lead- ing the Heat to a pair of ti- tles. The Cavaliers assem- bled a Miami-like trio with James, Irving and Kevin Love, but the King is doing just fine on his own with Irving hobbled and Love out with a season-ending injury. The Hawks had hoped that Carroll's appearance would provide a boost.
