Giants 10 a.m. FOX 1:15 p.m. CBS 4:30 p.m. ESPN The San Francisco Giants win- ning the World Series had made 2010 a special year. Who knew 2011 would be even better for Tehama County sports fans? The year of course was high- lighted by our Red Bluff Little Lea- guers, a story so good it went beyond the sports pages to the front of the newspaper. But even letting that one go to the rest of the newsroom, there was still plenty of stories to applaud in the sports department... • The Mercy Warriors defended their Northern Section boys basket- ball championship with a win at Chico State over Paradise Adventist Academy. • The Corning Cardinals boys soccer team also made it two cham- pionships in a row, when they once again knocked of West Valley in the final • Red Bluff track made a great statement at Masters taking home four section championships. Colin Dahlberg won the long jump then joined forces with Zach Iverson, Jonah McInnis and Jeff Foster to win the 4x400 relay. Meaggan Rec- tor won the shot put and freshman Adrienne Hinkston surprised every- one by capturing the 400 meters. • Red Bluff grabbed more respect in youth sports when the Jr. Spartans Peewees won the inaugur- al NorCalFed Superbowl. • Lady Spartans pitcher Megan McColpin pitched a perfect game on April 6. While the Spartans fell short of a third consecutive North- ern Section championship, their short stop Emily McEnaney broke the section's all-time home run record. • The Red Bluff Lady Spartans basketball program started up what could be a new tradition at the school — an annual Pink Out! The 56 43 24 21 Sports 1B Weekend Dec. 31, 2011-Jan. 1, 2012 2011 — A year to remember players urged their fans to come to a game decked out in pink attire with proceeds from the night donat- ed for cancer research. Pink Out! 2 is well in the works. • It was neat seeing local leg- end Aaron Rodgers become a dom- inate quarterback in the NFL and lead the Green Bay Packers to the Super Bowl. It was even more rewarding to see Red Bluff gradu- ate Collin Ramirez go out and break Rodgers' season touchdown passing record at Butte College. • Red Bluff wrestler and Dillon Reid and Corning's Calvin Meister had a series of grueling matches throughout the year ending with Reid winning the Northern Section title at 160 pounds and both wrestlers along with Matt Boles advancing to the state finals. • The Red Bluff Round-Up cel- ebrated its 90th edition in spectacu- lar fashion as usual. • The Corning Cardinals boys cross country team once again qual- ified for the state finals. The Spar- tan boys captured a league title. • The Red Bluff Bulls and Red Bluff 11-year-old All-Stars cap- tured district baseball titles showing the city's baseball prowess isn't confined to just 12 year-olds. While the Spartans earned a league title. • There was a ton of great tennis accomplishments during the year. The Red Bluff boys and Corning girls captured league titles as did Corning's Ryan Howell. • The Mercy Lady Warriors volleyball team had a spectacular season, reaching the Division-VI title game. • Red Bluff ushered in a new era with its girls golf program and with great success as Mickenzie Perdue and Sofia Frantz qualified for the North State championship. • Red Bluff's Paige Pearce continues to be not only one of the best archers in the country, but in the world. • The Daily News hosted its first Athletes of the Week ban- quet in a fun-filled night at Jack the Ribbers. • And finally at the start of the year the 49ers hired some guy named Jim Harbaugh. Hopefully their fans give the guy some time to turn the ship around.
