By Lyle Browning UA Extension Connection Program Coordinator Many of us regard the sweet potato as a food we eat as part of a holi- day meal. The fact is this thickened root of a tropical vine may be the heathiest food you can eat. All the studies we looked at in preparing this article rank sweet potatoes number one in nutrition when all factors are considered by a wide margin over the number two food, and they can grow and thrive here. Sweet potatoes need a long, hot growing season. At least four months of growing season is re- quired and we have that here. There are not many require- ments other than hot weather and a well-drained soil. Regular water is required and not much else. There are two types of sweet potato. One has sweet soft yellow fl esh and the other a fi rm whitish dry fl esh. The best time for plant- ing is when soil temperatures reach 60 degrees at night (usually the last half of April.) There is plenty of hot weather left for the plants to reach maturity. Most seed companies sell "slips" or budded parts of the skin. If you want to try growing sweet potatoes, we can help locate the "slips". Contact us at 928 669-9843 or visit our offi ce any week day. We are located at 2524 Mutahar just off Shea Road in Parker. • Birth • Obituary • Anniversary Place it FREE in the: Desert Messenger! 928-916-4235 Got something to share?
