Defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay (14-1), led by starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and Baltimore (11-4), led by veteran linebacker Ray Lewis, have seven apiece for the Jan. 29 game in Honolulu, the NFL announced Tuesday. Brady is one of seven starters Rogers from New England (12-3). The others are receiver Wes Welker, tight end Rob Gronkowski, defen- sive tackle Vince Wilfork, defen- sive end Andre Carter, and guards Brian Waters and Logan Mankins all are starters for the AFC from the Patriots. Special teamer Matthew Slater is the other New England representative. Linebacker Willis, DE Justin Smith, cornerback Carlos Rogers and tackle Joe Staley will start for the NFC from the 49ers (12-3), who had only Smith and Willis make the Pro Bowl last year. Green Bay' s Rodgers is the starting NFC quar- terback, backed by record-set- ting Drew Brees of Ne w Orleans (12-3). ''It does J. Smith have special significance, because when I was voted in in 2009, I was the third guy and I was very thankful to be voted in, and got the opportunity to start because of some injuries and guys not going,'' Rodgers said. ''It's great to be voted in as a starter, that means a lot to me and it's a special honor.'' Four of the NFL's biggest headline makers this season did not get voted in by players, coach- es and fans: Lions DT Ndamukong Suh, Steelers LB James Harrison, Panthers rookie QB Cam Newton, and Denver QB Tim Tebow. Suh might have lost support after drawing a two-game suspen- sion for stomping an oppo- nent, and Harrison's one-game suspension for his hel- met-to- helmet hit on Browns QB Colt McCo y might have Willis reduced his support. Fifteen first-time Pro Bowlers made the NFC squad, including Rogers, Staley and safety Dashon Goldson of the 49ers. Thirteen AFC players were first-time selec- tions, including Gronkowski, Carter and Slater of New England. Carter is on injured reserve (left quadriceps) and won't play. ''If you look around the NFC, you see a ton of amazing and tal- ented players at tight end,'' said the Saints' Jimmy Graham, the starter at the position and a first- time Pro Bowler. ''And to be thought of in that company by my peers, the head coaches and the fans who follow the NFL is some- thing I take seriously.'' Brees breaks passing record NEW ORLEANS (MCT) — When New Orleans took the field Monday night to face the Atlanta Falcons, the Saints looked to secure the NFC South Division title and quar- terback Drew Brees hoped to become the single-season passing yardage leader. Both feats were accom- plished. Brees broke Dan Marino's record with 307 yards en route to a 45-16 win at the Mer- cedes-Benz Superdome. More importantly, the Saints (12-3) won their sec- ond NFC South title in three years and improved to 7-0 at home, marking the first time in franchise history that New Orleans has won seven regu- lar-season home games. Atlanta, which secured a wild-card berth when the Bears lost to the Packers on Sunday night, dropped to 9-6. Brees, in his sixth season with the Saints, came in with 4,780 yards and needed 305 yards to break Marino's record of 5,084 set in 1984. To add to the historical night, Brees also became the first NFL quarterback to throw for more than 5,000 yards in two seasons (2008 season). The Falcons opened the game with a 64-yard drive to take a 3-0 lead on a 34-yard field goal by Matt Bryant with 8:53 left. New Orleans responded with an 84-yard drive to take a 7-3 lead after Pierre Thomas scored from eight yards out. Following a drive that saw the Falcons take a 10-7 lead late in the first quarter, the tives. Three rookies were chosen: Denver linebacker Von Miller, Cincinnati receiver A.J. Green, and Arizona cornerback Patrick Peterson, selected as a kick return specialist. He has tied an NFL record with four punt runbacks for TDs this season. ''As I've said before, A.J. is the best first-round draft pick that I've ever been around,'' Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said. ''He has shown the other players in this league, and the fans, that he deserved this honor. I have not seen a receiver better than he is at getting to the ball.'' All the kickers are from Bay Area teams. Kings open season with win over Lakers SACRAMENTO (AP) — For Sacramen- to fans, just seeing their Kings on the court was a victory after all the talk of moving at the end of last season. Beating the hated Los Angeles Lakers in the season opener only made it sweeter. Marcus Thornton scored 12 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter and the Kings beat the Lakers at home for the first time in more than three years, 100-91 on Monday night. ''It was nice to be back,'' coach Paul Westphal said. ''It was wild in there and our players really liked the feeling of that game. The fans were just fantastic.'' Tyreke Evans added 20 points, John Salmons had 13 and DeMarcus Cousins had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Kings, who had lost nine of 10 to the Lakers and five straight at home. ''It's not a rivalry,'' Kobe Bryant said. ''We beat them every year. Oh my God. I don't care if they beat us tonight. I like (Kings owners Joe and Gavin Maloof). I hope they enjoy this.'' Saints came back with an 81- yard drive to regain the lead for good at 14-10. That drive ended with Brees throwing eight yards to Marques Colston with 12:32 left in the second quarter. At that point, Brees had 97 passing yards and needed 208 yards to pass Marino. With 33 seconds left in the first half, Brees threw a 41- yard pass to Robert Meachem to move into the history books with his second 5,000- yard passing season of his career. Three plays later, Brees threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Graham to give the Saints a 21-10 halftime lead. At the half, Bress had com- pleted 15-of-25 passes for 230 yards, leaving him 75 yards shy of Marino's record. Brees moved closer to the record with a 24-yard touch- down pass to Meachem with 8:28 left in the third to cap off an 86-yard drive. The score, his third of the game, gave Brees 274 yards, leaving him 31 yards shy. With 2:51 left in the game, the record fell when Brees threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Darren Sproles out of the backfield for a 45-16 lead. Brees now has 5,087 pass- ing yards with one regular- season game left next week at home against Carolina. Bryant scored 29 points and Metta World Peace added 19 for the Lakers, who opened the season with consecutive losses for the first time since 2002-03, putting a damper on the start of new coach Mike Brown's tenure. ''We have a lot of games left, a lot of games left,'' World Peace said. ''Everything is going OK. Everything will be great.'' Kings rookie Jimmer Fredette entered to a loud ovation midway through the first quar- ter and then committed a double dribble the first time he touched the ball. Otherwise, it was nothing but a positive start to the season for the Kings, who didn't even know if they would be in Sacramento after ending last season with an overtime loss at home to the Lakers. But the city got a reprieve when the team decided to stay for at least one more season instead of moving to Anaheim. That has led to newfound optimism that an emerging ros- ter of young and athletic playmakers can return the Kings to prominence and the city can build a new arena to keep the team here for the long term. 49ers release wideout Braylon Edwards SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Braylon Edwards became a disappointment during an injury-plagued year during San Francisco's resurgent 2011 season. The struggling wide receiver was released by the 49ers on Tuesday three months after undergoing surgery on his right knee that limited him. Edwards tweeted the news early Tuesday, attributing the move to his injury, which ''required more time to rehab and has- n't allowed me to re-sync with the offense.'' The 49ers confirmed Edwards' release. ''I wish the 49ers organi- zation the best of luck dur- ing the playoffs,'' Edwards said in a statement on his website. ''I will be working hard this off season to strengthen my knee and prepare for the 2012 sea- son. Thanks for your con- tinued support and for being such loyal fans.'' San Francisco needs to add a receiver. Ted Ginn Jr., is nursing a left ankle injury sustained on the sec- ond-half kickoff return against Pittsburgh on Dec. 19, while Kyle Williams went down with a head injury in last Saturday's 19- 17 win at Seattle. Versatile tight end Delanie Walker also was hurt against the Seahawks, suffering a jaw injury; it is believed to be broken. The team hopes to get him back for the play- offs. Coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday the team might look outside the organization this week to fill spots — and that looks to be the case now — head- ing into the regular-season finale Sunday at St. Louis. The 49ers are trying to secure the NFC's No. 2 seed a first-round bye. Edwards had 15 catches for 181 yards and no touch- more in the offense. Harbaugh has said Edwards' performance in games and practice affected his playing time. Edwards, the No. 3 pick in the 2005 draft, got hurt early in Week 2 against Dallas on Sept. 18 and missed four games before returning against his former Cleveland team Oct. 30. Edwards revealed in late November he also was dealing with a shoulder injury sustained in the fourth quarter of a 19-11 win at Washington on Nov. 6. In a 16-6 loss on downs in eight games with five starts for the NFC West champion 49ers (12-3) after receiving a $3.5 million, one-year contract in August. That gave him a fresh start under coach and fellow Michigan man Har- baugh. He was inactive against St. Louis on Dec. 4 and again for the Monday night game. In a loss at Arizona on Dec. 11, Edwards had no catches and expressed his surprise not to be used Thanksgiving night at Bal- timore to Harbaugh's big brother, John, a second- quarter miscommunication between Edwards and quar- terback Alex Smith on a deep throw to the end zone resulted in an interception. The 49ers didn't score a touchdown for the first time all season. 1B Wednesday Dec. 28, 2011 49ers and Patriots lead Pro Bowl rosters Fourteen teams from each conference were represented, with St. Louis (2-13) and Washington (5- 10) drawing blanks in the NFC, Buffalo (6- 9) and Tennessee (8- 7) shut out in the AFC.
