Veterans Services Announces Scholarships for Children of Veterans C umberland County Veterans Services has announced two scholarships for eligible high school seniors who are the children of Cumberland County veterans. The scholarships are from the North Carolina Division of Veteran Affairs and the North Carolina Association of Veterans The North Carolina Division of Veteran Affairs manages a scholarship CUMBERLAND C for the children of certain categories of deceased, disabled, combat or POW/MIA veterans. The scholarship pays for four years of tuition and fees at a North Carolina state college or university. If the student attends a private school, the scholarship pays tuition up to $4,500 a year for eight semesters, if used within eight years. There are three categories in which the child is automatcially granted the scholarship - if his or her parent is a veteran who died during war- time service or from a service-connected disability; is 100 percent disabled due to war-time disability; or was a former POW/MIA, then the child is automatically granted the scholarship. Competitive classes for the scholarship include children of veterans with 20-90 percent service-connected war-time disability; children of veterans who received a Purple Heart; children of veterans who receive non-service connected pension; and children of veterans who received a campaign medal or war-tme veteran parent is deceased. To qualify, an applicant must be under the age of 25 and living in North Carolina. The student has to have been born in North Carolina and been a resident since birth, or the veteran parent was a legal resident of North Carolina at time of entrance into that period of service which is considered for eligibility. The student must be a natural born child of the veteran or have been adopted prior to age 15. The second scholarship is from the North Carolina Association of eterans North Carolina and is an honorably discharged veteran. The scholarship pays $500. The deadline for both scholarships is Feb. 15, 2012. Applications and aditional information on both scholarship programs are available at the of Social Services building. Local Author Celia Rivenbark To Meet, Greet at Library Event umberland County Library & Information Center's Friends of the Library will hold their annual meeting and author event on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m., at the Headquarters Library at 300 Maiden Lane. Southern humor writer Celia Rivenbark, a native of Duplin County, will be the featured guest. Rivenbark is an award- winning humorist and writer who has authored six books including "Stop Dressing Your Six-Year-Old Up as a Skank" and "Belle Weather." At the Friends of the Library meeting, Rivenbark will discuss her latest book, "You Don't Sweat Much for a Fat Girl." Winter Weather Presentation To Be Held At FSU Cumberland County Emergency Services and Fayetteville State University are sponsoring a 2011-2012 Winter Weather Season presentation from the National Weather Service on Thursday, Jan. 5, at 9 a.m. at the Shaw Auditorium on the campus of FSU. "The public is encouraged to attend this event, which will be a good opportunity to familiarize them with how the National Weather Service makes forecasts and predictions," said Gene Booth, Cumberland County Topics to be covered at the event will include: 2011-2012 winter weather; winter weather safety; staying informed about winter weather; communicating with the National Weather Service and reporting winter weather.
